Not as an emergency they won’t Louella12. They don’t have 24 hour emergency admissions or intensive care cover. Some hospitals have mixed NHS and private patients, and they might, but not purely private hospitals.

I know they do, due to the fact my brother in law was treated in the private Spire hospital in Liverpool!

Not sure if Carrie was admitted as an emergency. Pneumonia doesn't usually present that way. I was ill for a week or so before eventually being admitted and diagnosed.

And talking of private hospitals, I read about a private hospital performing heart transplants. I found it hard to believe but after searching I discovered it was true. I'm not sure how they do this. I need to look into it more. Maybe tomorrow!

The Spire Hospital Liverpool is a surgical and diagnostic unit, it doesn’t have the facilities and back up to admit medical patients. If somebody developed pneumonia whilst an inpatient they would treat it up to a certain point, but transfer to an NHS hospital if too sick for them to manage. The same applies if patients need intensive care post surgery. Here’s the CQC Report which details the facilities and specialties. There are one or two private hospitals in the UK that do provide a wider, but not complete, set of services, but they are very few and far between.

If a private hospital is going to perform operations they will need an ICU facility in case of post-operative problems but I know the one near here will send patients to an NHS hospital if necessary.

Just checked. Our nearest Spire Hospital has just three intensive care beds.

There are over 6000 NHS ICU beds Louella12, compared with perhaps 100 private beds in the facilities you mention. I highly doubt if the private ICU beds in most of the private hospitals offer the full range of ICU either, they are most likely for complex post surgical cases.
Regardless, Carrie Johnson was in an NHS hospital.

I wouldn’t criticise her for not having had the flu vaccine. It wouldn’t have occurred to me at her age, and in fact I’ve only had it for about the past eight years, since it dawned on me that I am probably now classed as elderly!

I know that to be the case too Allira. The vast majority of private hospitals are not geared up for medical, as opposed to surgical, patients, they don’t have the facilities or the staff cover to deal with them, and i know from experience that complex medical cases are always transferred to the NHS. Some NHS hospitals also have private beds, but use the services of the NHS and cross charge.

It didn't occur to me to have the 'flu jab until I was about 60. Then I missed several years until one year before Covid when there was a particularly bad strain around.

I hope she’s getting better treatment than my dad received. My dad was sent home from hospital with a chest infection, turned out, when I read his hospital notes he was being treated for pneumonia.
Myself & the DNs had been asking all week for a gp visit as I felt he wasn’t getting any better & was struggling for breath! He died a few nights later 😔 I feel he may had stood a chance if he had received another course of antibiotics.
