.....and they made it plain they didn't want a king.

So why have they got one? Donald Trump has said he will sign as many documents into law as he possibly can on his first day. Didn't Bad King John behave like this, thus his Barons made him sign Magna Carta (although that seems fairly redundant these days.)

Trump is unpredictable
Wait and see.

Maybe getting hostages released is some sort of light.

Those who dislike Trump will say it's nothing to do with him. No matter. However, there are numerous voices saying that without Trump's talk of all hell being let loose, this ceasefire wouldn't be happening

People may believe he was involved, if he lives up to his clear statement about ending the Russia/Ukraine war in 24 hours. Watching this space.

According to news, Biden and Trump teams were both involved. CNN.

Yes Freya it was talked about on LK yesterday. Despite their open antagonism, Biden, Harris and Trump have worked on ending the war in Gaza.
One thing I do agree with Trump about is a hatred of war. He said it
interferes with trade and kills people.
Nobody can deny that.

I don't think for a moment Trump is going to be able to carry out the "deport all" policy. I think crucial parts of the economy are tied in with them, I think there will be resistance to tearing some families apart (which is what it means, when children are US citizens and parents are not). Whats he going to do? round up and dump over the border in Mexico? Even if they have come from other countries?

I'm very sad he's going to end diversity policies in the military. God knows how many years it's taken to end the prejudice against women and gay people.

I also think we should give Biden credit for all the years of "leg work" on the cease fire. It took unilateral agreement in the end, it had to, given a new incoming administration and the amount the USA gives to Israel, but give credit where its due.

Allira how many checks and balances do you need to rebuild 40 hospitals for example? Inertia is more accurate.

Every Government no matter which party is frightened to put up income tax and make wealthy businesses pay their dues.

They tinker around the edges.

In Ukraine it’s reasonable to get a ceasefire quickly an agreed permanent end to hostilities will take longer

Nobody knows exactly what he signed. He became president so he could pardon himself of crimes, get retribution on people he thought wronged him and make money of course. I've always thought he'd rather be playing golf(or cheating at golf) than be president which is too much work. All this nonsense about lowering prices and invading Panama is just that, nonsense.

missdeke Tue 21-Jan-25 12:56:42

They said on the news this morning that he has signed away peopl's rights to citizenship even if they were born in the united states, apparently there are only 2 genders now, male and female however you were born, he's also pardoned all those imprisoned for the Capitol Hill riots.

I knew an American lady whose husband worked for a US company in Mexico, if Mexico is so bad then it makes no sense to send Americans there to work in factories there
I don't know if Mexico benefits from this but if they don't and Trump decides to go full on deporting, then Mexico should do the same with the Americans. My friend actually liked being part of Mexican life, she went to a Mexican church etc but a lot of mothers kept to themselves in their expat community

Mexico has a very healthy automotive industry.

sixmexico.com/blog/car-brands-made-in-mexico#:~:text=Cars%20Made%20in%20Mexico&text=Ford's%20Hermosillo%20Stamping%20and%20Assembly,Ford%20Fusion%20and%20Lincoln%20MKZ.&text=One%20of%20Mexico's%20largest%20car,among%20Volkswagen%20models%20it%20manufactures.&text=The%20Mazda3%20and%20Mazda2%20are%20assembled%20at%20Mazda's%20Salamanca%20plant.

It’s not so much the Mexicans etc that’s got him riled, it’s the Chinese. 31,000 were apprehended in 2023.

Syracute Tue 21-Jan-25 14:51:40

Oops ! That didn’t happen did it !
The absurdity of it all that Trump can just walz in and take credit for the peace agreement just is ridiculous and nothing more . I am amazed at those here that just buy in to all the Trump propaganda !

Exactly !!! It may have passed some by but on the eve of his inauguration he and Melania debuted their crypto currency to the markets . This will just be another opportunity to make money off the presidency !

Most Germans did not want a dictator in 1933, either. Unhappily, they got one.

Now it is the USA's turn.

Same process: a legally elected head of state turning into a, presumably insane, dictator.

winterwhite Tue 21-Jan-25 15:36:46

What the Americans of the 1770s wanted was no taxation without representation which many even at the time thought a fair point. British intransigence forced the issue.

Harv1 Tue 21-Jan-25 15:42:33

Yes Trump should get Credit he is what he says, a man of his word .
I for one in millions applaud this man unlike Flatline Britain he will make America Great Again .. and Flatline Brits will be stuck with Starmers cover up lies ……

Arto1s Tue 21-Jan-25 15:43:53

Biden used his power shamelessly just before Trump became President. Preemptive Pardons for his family? What the hell… and hundreds of imprisoned murderers pardoned also. He is despicable.

Summerlove Tue 21-Jan-25 15:46:06

I’m always amazed at how brazenly Trump flouts the laws.

Presidents are Supposed to remove themselves from their businesses. This guy just promotes them openly and continues to make more money.

mum2three Tue 21-Jan-25 15:51:55

We dispensed with our monarchy (or rather we robbed them of any power), yet we have Prime Ministers who behave in the same way. The destiny of the country still depends very much on the personality of the ruler.
Many people have high hopes for Trump. Let us hope he doesn't let us down.

Arto1s Tue 21-Jan-25 16:09:56

The President who let us down the worst is Biden without a doubt.

Maremia Tue 21-Jan-25 17:19:44

Actions speak louder than words. One action has been to take down from the Government website, the helpline for those with 'reproductive issues'.

I think wait and see. I really hope he does end wars and is true to his word but I am not sure how much sway he has in places like the Middle East. I could see him removing support for Ukraine pretty quickly and that may or may not lead to some sort of settlement. I feel more confident in him than Biden in regard to world peace but not so sure about how he will go in certain parts of the USA, particularly the previous Democrat strongholds.
