I found this very disturbing, especially the look on his face with the first one.

I don’t think it was a nazi salute at all- he just gets over zealous!

Speak to the experts.

Germany is extremely angry,

Musk’s parents were Nazis

They moved to an apartheid country and were very active in its enforcement.

Musk knows exactly what he is doing.

I agree. He was excited about Mars. It was - To Infinity and Beyond!

Yeah, he was super excited wasn’t he? Pacing the stage like a caged tiger 😁

All Musk has to do is say that he is sorry his gesture was open to misinterpretation and that what he really meant was.... (fill in blank space).

Dickens

Galaxy

I sort of agree Dickens, but it was bizarre.
I think he is not neurotypical, but obviously am diagnosing a stranger on the internet which is not acceptable!

Oh, I'm quite prepared to accept I'm wrong - as I said, it was a "gut reaction".

If he really is reviving the Nazi salute - deliberately - then he's been watched by millions and it will be interesting and necessary to follow their reactions.

Perhaps he's emboldened by the current fiasco of Trump 'fever' and believes in a 'new dawn' of Politics?

I just don't know. When I looked at the footage, I also thought he looked rather silly - like a teenager high on adrenalin or intoxicated.

I still think he's going to 'come a cropper' at some point, if for example, he appears to be outshining Trump, or, in his unpredictability, steps too far. His behaviour is apparently sometimes bizarre, and I think he's a bit emotionally unstable, but that's purely my subjective view.

Dickens.. Musk has said himself that he has Aspergers Syndrome a form of Autism

Aspergers is no longer a recognised diagnosis from what I have read. Maybe it is different in the USA but again I believe the DSM 5 is used in the USA so maybe he should say he is on the Autistic Spectrum.

Where I live (Sussex), for the last 15 years or so, it's been referred to as an 'autistic condition' no matter where people are on the spectrum.

Wyllow3 Wed 22-Jan-25 14:19:33

He absolutely could not have ben unaware of the connections to the gesture. Remember the words he said:

"the future of civilization is assured"

And yes, the expression on his face is significant.

wibblywobblywobblebottom Wed 22-Jan-25 14:24:38

He had been heavily self-medicating that day. His far right sympathies are well known.

Mt61 Wed 22-Jan-25 14:24:41

I would have to watch it again, but a lot of people on here don’t like him, so will say it’s a nazi salute.. we just follow his space-x program. I think he ls just an enthusiastic person tbh. I don’t follow his politics or who he likes.

Earthmother9 Wed 22-Jan-25 14:26:03

It was a very bad salute and not really Nazi.

JacquiG Wed 22-Jan-25 14:33:34

There are images of Biden, Clintons (both), Obama, Bush, etc all making the same salute. If the whole video is watched, then see how Musk puts his hand on his heart and then over-dramaticaly throws said heart to the audience.

Isn't he 'on the spectrum' as we say? I suspect he was overcome with emotion and was struggling to keep his composure.

Grandmabatty Wed 22-Jan-25 14:36:30

Can you show me some examples of Biden, Clintons et al making the same salute?

JacquiG Wed 22-Jan-25 14:39:46

'25Avalon

Now he is aware of the concerns raised by this salute why doesn’t he explain it wasn’t a nazi salute, apologise, and confirm he won’t continue doing it ?'

Can't imagine Bush, Biden, The Clintons, Obama etc apologising! They've done the same.

MaizieD Wed 22-Jan-25 14:45:20

Examples of Bush, Biden etc. making the same gesture, please..

There are some fake or photoshopped pictures doing the rounds, I think.

Obama raising his arm to wave to someone etc

It is going to be very difficult to sort out fake news and pictures from the truth and we're only really at the start of this phenomenon.

knspol Wed 22-Jan-25 15:26:45

I don't like the man and he often has a weird look in his eyes but I watched the inauguration ceremonies, saw the raised arm and it never occurred to me that it was other than an enthusiastic celebration.

Newdawn Wed 22-Jan-25 15:34:02

What has Musk said...was it meant as a nazi salute. What I don't understand is why our politicians and other people don't boycott X and reduce his wealth and power.

Jam108 Wed 22-Jan-25 16:07:43

Someone already mentioned ‘not neuro typical’
Could his behaviour/character indicate being high functioning on the spectrum?

I think he’s more dangerous than DT

Fortunately there are both powerful egos and they'll soon fall out and it'll all end in tears.

albertina Wed 22-Jan-25 16:36:47

He's a scary man. His salute was also scary and disgusting. The trouble is when he says "jump" KS, DT and other leaders will probably say "how high?"

The lunatics are now in charge of the asylum.

Oh dear me, just a tad over the top 🤦🏼‍♀️

Louella12 Wed 22-Jan-25 16:51:39

If you see the whole clip where he's touching his heart in quite an unusual fashion then hurling his 'salute' you'll see it can't be construed as a Nazi same salute.

If you care to troll through clips of politicians you will see many engaging in awkward behaviours, salutes included, when fronting a speech or whatnot. Politicians, left, right, middle, whatever

Many people are very unhappy that Trunmp do well be searching for anything and everything . I do wish they wouldn't, it's tiresome.

Elon Musk doesn’t need our politicians or any other country’s politicians to make him as rich as crassus.
This interest in politics won’t last. Like most neurodiverse people he will move onto something else soon.

Having seen it myself, if anyone genuinely thinks that is a Nazi salute then you either haven't watched it or you are simply looking for something that isn't there. It's a 'hand on heart to everyone out there' gesture.

The 'future of civilisation is assured' comment relates to is his Starship program taking humans to Mars (and beyond) which he has stated many, many times before in relation to putting humans on another planet. And if anyone cares to check his X account he rubbished the idea of the Nazi salute with, I would say, the contempt it deserves (and yes, there is a video of Obama doing the 'salute' in one of his speeches but without the same outpouring of outrage).
