Trump’s Speech

Are these really the words of a sane man!

“America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world,”

Be afraid, be very afraid!

Casdon don’t know much about the Panama Canal but I didn’t think it was a country in itself.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 21-Jan-25 10:09:12

My initial reaction was that it was a speech of division and fear.

The release of the neo-Nazis from prison.

The underlying threat of violence in the Panama issue, the Canadian border threat, the expansionism and the reduction of rights.

We have yet to see any of these threats come into action, if they do it will not be pretty, nor conducive to peace.

Which countries are on the Trump list to raid? My impression is that Trump is concentrating on America and his expansionist plans do not include invading foreign lands. Casdon

Do you think the Panama Canal belongs to USA ronib?

From what I read the other week USA handed over control of the canal to Panama.

Panama now gives the Chinese vessels preferential treatment and rates, China is calling the shots now.

But surely that is up to Panama?

If you believe in sovereign states - then so be it.

He sounded as if he was going to fix all of America's problems in one fell swoop. What he didn't mention was how he is going to do it though. Had to laugh when he said he'd been saved by God to make America great again.

On this other GN thread page we get lists of what Trump has signed already rather than just debating a speech that has now past.

ronib Tue 21-Jan-25 10:21:59

If Panama hadn’t relied so heavily on America to build the canal, there might be some argument to say that China shouldn’t be given preferential shipping rates. As it is, America could be thought to be protecting its own interests. I think we should hold off judgement until we have a fuller understanding.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 21-Jan-25 10:27:59

There is an argument for the USA to negotiate terms - which I think is what it will come down to. It is just a shame Trump is such a bull.

The underlying threat of violence is so unnecessary.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 21-Jan-25 10:29:23

Panama’s relationship with China is entirely its own affair. Trump may not like it but that’s life.

*Trump intends to put America first....and we need to start putting Britain first!* - how tedious (and frankly dangerous) these sort of media soundbites have become. They exist for those who prefer not to think or reflect on what is best for humankind.

We do not need top dogs, we do not need a competitive mindset - we need to think about how nations can cooperate and co-exist with kindness and consideration. We now have global communication and for the first time in history the tools to do this - and what has happened? The media have twisted greedy people's minds into wanting top status for their country rather than grabbing this opportunity to care for all nations.

No wonder we are in this mess where unremitting conflict is the norm.

Well said

Apologies, I misread the “positives” comments, nothing wrong with highlighting someone’s tone and sound, as opposed to the content.

I therefore retract my “deranged” comment, with an apology.

thanks

No worries Cossy. I'm completely bonkers, but in a very different way from Trump!

I agree Whitewavemark2

I am not happy with China trying to control whatever and whoever they can, but neither am I happy with the USA or any other state overstepping its territorial integrity (rights)

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 21-Jan-25 10:46:49

I agree and anyone who believes his speech is full of “positives” is possibly naive or perhaps deranged!

Well that’s me told Cossy.

Yes.

My impression is that China can be thought of as a threat to the USA’s economy and in pursuit of strengthening economic growth, Trump will seek beneficial rates when using the Panama Canal. China will be one of Trump’s defined enemies in his pursuit of economic success and Trump is in triumphal mode just now. Two years down the line will be interesting.

There are some horrible comments on here, particularly comments about joining ‘nasty far right’ groups. That comment made me feel sick, frankly and I think it was undeserved .
🤮

Wyllow3 Tue 21-Jan-25 11:15:24

It was a reply to a provocative post, nanna8. The threads on Trump have been full of them. Mountain and molehill - and simply different POV.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 21-Jan-25 11:51:23

There was plenty to take in wasn’t there? In his inauguration speech, Trump promised to: declare a state of emergency at the southern border; declare a “national energy emergency”; undo the Green New Deal; create an External Revenue Service to level tariffs on foreign nations; rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”; and establish a “Department of Government Efficiency.” Following the speech, his administration fired off a barrage of executive orders, pausing the TikTok ban, withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord, freezing federal hiring, and undoing over 70 Biden-era executive actions.

Other actions included one “ending the weaponization of the federal government” and another calling on “the heads of all executive departments and agencies” to “deliver emergency price relief” to the American people.

He’s had 4 years out of office. He’s raring to go.

As an American I am sickened by Trumps speech. He said at least nine lies . If you keep saying the same lies over and over people believe you . The release of the Jan 6th criminals is disgusting sending a clear message that it’s okay to commit crimes against our institutions. Trump does NOT know history. He will make our country isolationist . He has no respect for democracy or the rule of law. Please say prayers for us . I’m so embarrassed for our country. Unfortunately, many people did not vote at all and this is what we are stuck with.

I feel for you. We were in a similar boat with Johnson. The acceptance of the death of integrity in government is frankly terrifying.

I’m sorry if you feel that my remarks were nasty, but it was in direct response to repeated remarks on threads.
