Before getting hysterical about this, I’d like to know whether this number includes people seeking asylum and the known numbers of those who entered the UK illegally who are in the system. If they are included in the figure it’s less of a headline.

The introduction of ID cards has been blocked previously, that would in my opinion be the first step to reducing this issue.

ID cards are a great idea!

Is anyone suggesting these 1,000,000 million extra people all came here in the last 6 months?

Also, if they know who this people are, especially in London, why have they not reported them?

I saw the article in the Telegraph and the Times, the bulk of these (think of a number) illegal immigrants have overstayed their visas but in both cases the articles showed pictures of asylum seekers arriving on small boats. It told me everything I needed to know about the purpose of the article.

It is so sad to see hatred of others whipped up so very causally and with no concern about the possible consequences.

1m migrants - a lot will be students, more here legally, the rest are working in the black economy, anything that pays cash, market stalls, corner shops, takeaways, brothels too.
It’s happening in every town and city, not just London.

Could the people who are so concerned about immigration explain why they don't appear to be enthusiastic about identity cards?
It is such an obvious starting point.

I am for Identity Cards.

We are tracked every time we drive (number plate recognition) every time we use a store loyal card, bank card or credit card.

UK should have ID cards.

Yes there is an element of severe exploitation. But that really doesn’t address the problem.

But I think luckygirl was saying that divisive language is only going to make the problem worse.

Are you not concerned that these people could be being exploited.

They could have been trafficked here, have no papers and made to work for peanuts, could be held in brothels, working as general dogs bodies with no rights or access to healthcare?

We stopped subscribing to The Telegraph a few years ago when we realised how right wing biased they were. For what it’s worth we have The Times not the Guardian so imo we read a paper that is slightly right of centre. Articles such as this one are just there to stir up trouble. And imo people who are ‘worried’ about the way illegal immigrants are treated by the traffickers are just are just kidding themselves. They really just don’t want ‘furriners’ here; full stop.

Hear hear! Time to get tough and stop being taken for fools.

Absolutely no need for inflammatory language, all we really require, from any source of media, is pure, truthful facts, with evidence to back up anything involving statistics.

All we need from any govt is open and honest feedback about how things really are and what they propose to do about all of our challenges and then keep us regularly updated on progress (or lack of)

I would love to see the small boats stop, the gangs “smashed” and those seeking asylum here better protected, processed very quickly, and leave to remain and right to work given or these people deported.

I want a humane system, not what’s currently happening with migration. I would also remind you many many Brits have chosen to make their homes somewhere other than this country of their birth.

Clearly we need more staff and a better system in Border Control and whichever dept issues visas.

Totally agree with you. We need to read beyond the headlines to know exactly what these numbers mean. Interesting that the papers who have headlined it are ones who have a history of "Harry baiting", his successful Court case being relegated to inside pages ... in the case of the Mail it's on a left hand page, which apparently is one which is often skipped when people go through the paper. Before anyone asks how I know that, it's because my other half likes to get the Mail - I very definitely don't.

I'm afraid I do not believe everything I read in the newspapers. Most of them should have a read with caution warning for the utter garbage they report and the standard of journalism is dire.

Again, the headlines give no source for us to read for ourselves. Ask yourselves, why not?

The only industry that is inspected for illegal workers is agriculture, for ALL other businesses there are no checks, there is widespread fraud and abuse. Reputable businesses check for work permits, however false documentation and passports are widespread and wouldn’t be noticed by business managers.

You’ve only got to go down any high street - here there are about 4 nail bars staffed by Vietnamese, loads of scooter delivery drivers who mostly seem to be South American, a couple of car washes where the people seem to be Eastern European, not to mention all the cleaners and people working in various shops and businesses, you can’t tell me they all have visas- does someone coming in to work in a nail bar really easily get a work visa? It’s all in plain sight.

I’m all in favour of ID too, that would go someway to helping solve this problem.

For years I’ve been saying we need ID CARDS but folk say they can be cloned etc etc… in Germany you have to produce ID card when/if stopped by police… they then check this against the car licence number plate… you have to re-register your car no plate if you move from state to state.. they are so brilliant at catching people who are using clone IDs and not living where they say they are …England should adopt this policy as soon as!
