Shocking news this morning. On the tv and in the papers.

Apparently there are over one million migrants living here in the UK who have no right to be here.

600,000 of them are living in London. Just think about that huge number for a moment.

It equates to TEN football stadiums full to capacity in our capital city.

No wonder we’re broke. It’s dispiriting. Our borders are so leaky it’s not worth pretending any more that we have them.

What do you think about this newly released information?

Good luck with the cat smile much more important smile

Identity cards should be law. The only reason for not having one us because you are not entitled, if you haven't one no benefits, pension etc; you haven't one go back to country of origin unless here awaiting processing. That’s one big reason for Trump getting in, he is dealing with it, our governments have given in to certain pressures so did nothing to save upsetting them. No wonder theres such high instances of crime how are those people getting money or accommodation.

Mamie Thu 23-Jan-25 13:01:11

I certainly don't see ID cards being a top priority in the inflammatory threads and posts about immigration. I do see posts from people who are concerned and still take a measured view that includes ID.
I am not sure how easy forgery is when facial recognition and fingerprints are stored on a government database and include information of place, date of birth, proof of address and registration for taxes etc.

I haven't read the article, as there is no link, and 'apparently' doesn't give much to go on to find a source; but maybe someone who has read it can explain who has counted these people and how they did it, please?

I asked this on page one, and I don't think there's been an answer.

Anyone?

The only industry that is inspected for illegal workers is agriculture, for ALL other businesses there are no checks, there is widespread fraud and abuse. Reputable businesses check for work permits, however false documentation and passports are widespread and wouldn’t be noticed by business managers.

Surely the business would be alerted to false information as such as it attempted to make NI and tax payments for the employee?

silverlining48 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:29:44

I have not seen the OP article, but see it as divisive and unproven printed just to encourage disquiet annd fear among those of the population who believe everything they read.

Being curious about numbers of British immigrants living abroad, I had a look and as of last year there were 5.5 million permanent residents and another half a million with property abroad.
The majority are in Australia and assume Canada with Spain followed by France I assume, being the major destinations in Europe.
So if the numbers are right that makes 6 million migrant brits abroad, which includes my dd and her dh.
Let’s hope they don’t suddenly get chucked out. Who knows , the world feels as precarious as it did when I was young.

Kandinsky Thu 23-Jan-25 13:31:18

This country needs Donald Trump.
God I wish he was our PM.

silverlining48 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:34:31

God I am glad he’s not. P

Thus spoken by someone who isn’t gay or from an ethnic minority. But how do you feel about his attitude towards women having control of their own bodies! Or a privatised health system that many people can’t afford! Who releases people from prison who were responsible for people dying? And is against any form of gun control. Who mocks the disabled and who eluded to a woman reporter being on her period. Do you really long for someone like that governing our country sad.

Why should the authorities knowing who is in the UK encouraging fear and disquiet?

Every country should be aware of who has entered the country and why, along with how they can support themselves.

It is not racist, it is not ant immigrants, its common sense.

Or are you happy with people living under the radar in appallingly conditions tantamount to modern day slavery?

I am definitely not!

I never thought I would say this but I think we need someone like Trump.

Welcome GN to the post truth era of alternative facts a.k.a. lies, where only those who agree with the inflammatory OP are allowed an opinion!

I am sorry I didn't see the deleted post.

But yes, it is so weird, that the far Right who is constantly shouting about freedom of speech, really don't like it when it is the freedom to say what they don't want to hear.

Like the amazing Bishop too.

What far right? There isn’t any on here.

Wyllow3 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:47:38

Is this a record?

Just 5 pages from unsubstantiated "shocking" press reports to "we need Reform/Trump".

silverlining48 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:50:19

GG I agree with your points but was responding to the tone and title of the OP which to me was worded to whip up fear and anger.

Precisely Claremont.

Shut down any voice of descent … so that’s freedom of speech is it🤷‍♀️

Not precisely at all. There isn’t anyone on this thread shutting down any dissent, there are a number of opinions including the ones who don’t agree with the subject of the OP.
If you have a post deleted the reason is that it contravenes the GN guidelines.

Oreo Thu 23-Jan-25 13:55:03

I can easily believe there are a huge number of immigrants here illegally and living under the radar, I’ve no idea about numbers tho.
Every time an Indian or Chinese restaurant or nail bar is raided they find them.

Cossy Thu 23-Jan-25 14:01:52

I thank god every day he is not our president!

So you would like to pay each time you need to see a GP, then pay exhoribant amounts of cash for meds, risk gun crime, see families split up and children herded into “cages”, you like to see women not being able to seek terminations and doctors prosecuted for performing them?

Plus all the things which happen in the USA, like lack of animal welfare and in some states no welfare for those suddenly find themselves unemployed? Whilst you’re chewing this over hope you wouldn’t mind your children having very little in the way of employment protection and heaven help them if they are gay!

Skydancer Thu 23-Jan-25 14:06:37

I've always found it hard to believe that a country that is an island finds it so difficult to control its own borders.

Louella12 Thu 23-Jan-25 14:07:27

Cossy, those cages you referred to were built for Obama'a reign

MICHELLE OBAMA, on Americans: “They watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown into cages.”

THE FACTS: The reference to cages is misleading and a matter that Democrats have persistently distorted.

LizzieDrip Thu 23-Jan-25 14:07:43

Apologies for my incorrect spelling of ‘dissent’ - don’t like to mis-spell words.

No apologies for the post.

escaped Thu 23-Jan-25 14:08:11

I think posters getting het up about the title of the thread are being a bit precious. We have dozens of threads with the word shocking in the OP - because to some GNetters it is just that. The housing crisis, shocking, the water companies, shocking, Prince Charles shocking etc . The word is used so often that it has pretty much lost its power to whip up anything much. Just like appalling or disgusting.

Several establishments were raided here several years ago, Indian Restaurants, Chinese takeaways, nail bars etc.,

Illegal workers found, largest fine was £47,000, the employers were given five years to pay it.

M0nica Thu 23-Jan-25 14:41:52

FGT I do not understand your logic. Why is, supposedly having a million illegal immigrants in this country the reason we have no growth.

Surely the opposite is true. With many of these illegal immigrants working in the black economy, almost definitely for well below the minimum wage, they are adding to the growth in the economy. As well as that they will not be going near te NHS except in emergencies and avoiding any contact with the authorities, they are the growth engine of the future.

perhaps we should encourage them.

Most of them are working in classic money laundering businesses.
This is not money that goes into the local economy.
