What is it with men? Some men, perhaps, but TOO MANY

Wynne Evans has stepped away from his BBC radio programme after making an “inappropriate and unacceptable” remark towards a Strictly Come Dancing presenter
Evans, the opera singer and star of the Go Compare adverts, was caught on camera appearing to use the term “spit roast” in reference to Janette Manrara, who is hosting the Strictly live tour.
The incident happened during a photocall for the tour in Birmingham, as Ms Manrara stood between Evans and Jamie Borthwick, another Strictly contestant. Borthwick did not take part in the exchange
I am proud to say it would not have occurred to DH or indeed any men in my family to use that sort of language.
D1 and GD (10) went to the Strictly Live show 10 days ago, with friends, also with a 10 year old daughter.
GD loved it but if she had caught any of the interview what on earth could we have said to her?

I had never heard of it until. many years ago whilst working in a well known restaurant chain, two male customers ordered spit roast chicken in fits of giggles and laughter. I hadn't got a clue what they were talking about and put the order through. A colleague enlightened me.
Yes it a disgusting term and I really do not understand why some men think it is acceptable and funny.

Ugh!!!! Disgusting! Had to google it. I am obviously naive. Thank goodness.

Mojack26 Wed 29-Jan-25 19:20:50

No idea what he said but do they never learn?

Iam64 Wed 29-Jan-25 19:27:25

It begins to look like, no, they will never learn.
We learned from the exploitation of Hollywood women like Marilyn Monroe, Betty Davies etc etc. then from Me2. Then we see this gross behaviour and speech. Then we look at PDiddy

Can I respectfully suggest you look this up?
It’s been front page news today and a major news story even before that.

Madmeg Wed 29-Jan-25 19:49:25

I had to look it up cos my DH was no help either. As well as disgusting, in my opinion the use of it seems rather juvenile - the sort of phrase a teenager might use and giggle about with his mates before he learns that it isn't appropriate. 50-plus years ago I worked with a young chap who used to make all sorts of lewd comments to his women colleagues and thought it was hilarious. It took me, a shy 19-year-old, to tell him he was insulting them and he was horrified - it had not crossed his mind that they would be offended.

We are still mates.

Thank goodness times are changing, WOKE or not, new generations are being taught that there is now a consequence to inappropriate behaviour and it will not be tolerated. You only have to look back at 1970's TV shows where women were sex objects scantily dressed paraded around even on family shows , no wonder so many men now behave like they do. BUT looking forward, by changing attitudes and punishing and publicly recognising this bad behaviour we are now teaching the next generation to treat everyone with respect.

Absolutely. I rewatched a very old episode of 'The Two Ronnies' recently and I was surprised at the level of casual sexism in what was a family show. This is just one example.

It seems to be taking some older men a while for it to sink in that what was seen as acceptable when they were younger is no longer OK. How many more celebs are going to overstep the mark before the penny drops?

Had tolook the phrase up. Absolutely disgusting. He obviously thought it that he said it. Don't know how old his children are but hope they don't have to deal with the fallout.

yellowfox Thu 30-Jan-25 10:30:42

Just looked it up. It's absolutely vile.
Never want to hear of the man again.

Norah Thu 30-Jan-25 11:13:22

I didn't look it up, I've no desire to read the definition.

People should always challenge "locker room banter" as unacceptable.

Indeed.

MountainAsh

Never heard of it. I hate all this”woke” nonsense.

I don't think what the Go Compare bloke supposedly said was remotely
'Woke' MountainAsh! 😶

Iam64 Thu 30-Jan-25 12:38:05

Unless MountainAsh considers the criticism of him woke nonsense

LauraNorderr Thu 30-Jan-25 12:59:40

Nothing to do with woke, banter, mental health, grief or any other lame excuse.
Just plain old disgusting, disrespectful, unacceptable behaviour.
Time he and others of the same ilk disappeared from public life.

Allira Thu 30-Jan-25 13:01:04

He's not just the Go Compare bloke although that advert made more people aware of him. He's an opera singer, had a radio show then became more well known through Strictly. Now notorious.

He's let himself down. Stupid man.

JamesandJon33 Thu 30-Jan-25 13:51:06

Not a very good opera singer though !

NannyC1 Thu 30-Jan-25 13:59:33

Mountain Ash do you actually know what Woke means. I doubt it very much. Definition Progressive or left-wing attitudes or practices, esp. those opposing social injustice or discrimination. So let us all be Woke.
"Spit roasting" is when 2 men have sex with a woman at the same time!
How is that anything to do with being Woke!

Wyllow3 Thu 30-Jan-25 14:05:09

Its the opposite!

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 14:23:05

As I have mentioned before many dont see woke as progressive. Online 'woke' men tend to be very aggressive. They generally get very cross about any criticism of porn.

Ilovedogs22 Thu 30-Jan-25 14:29:41

Iam64

Unless MountainAsh considers the criticism of him woke nonsense

I would advise that MountainAsh doesn't search for 'Spit Roast' on the computer!!!
It's not for the faint of heart & it's certainly not a nice family recipe! 🥴

Iam64 Thu 30-Jan-25 15:13:22

Galaxy - I’m with you on pornography, so called ‘sex work’ etc
I also agree that some men who see themselves as what I still see as trendy or right on, are so often casually misogynistic. My first understanding of woke related to its use by black people in their own support
It’s like PC - a ridiculous phrase aimed at shutting down debate I fear

Caitlin Moran in The Times to-day.

There is a certain kind of man who never realises how lucky they are. They think “acting professionally” is for boring nobodies; they ignore disciplinary procedures; and they will not learn. In the end every industry is a game of statistics. Thus far, after 97 years of terrestrial television, we are yet to have a single scandal about a female presenter acting inappropriately.

I kinda agree

Iam64 Thu 30-Jan-25 15:35:33

I see the bishop of Liverpool has “retired to ensure he doesn’t become a distraction”. He’s denying any inappropriate behaviour

As my grannie might have said “they must think we fell off a flitting”.

We’re going to stop subscribing to The Times, but I’m really going to miss Caitlin’s articles and comments. I’ve followed her ever since she wrote for The Observer.

Not a very good opera singer though !

Really?
He's been in a lot of productions with Welsh National Opera, at the Royal Opera House, several others, BBC Proms etc.

You may not like his latest behaviour and I do not condone it in the slightest but I think that there's no need to start disparaging his career or being nasty about his looks, as one poster (not you) was.

I'm not defending his behaviour in the slightest.
As I said, what a stupid thing to do.

Unless he has Tourette Syndrome and can't help himself but therd seems to be no evidence of thst.
