An integrated health and care system. The current NHS and the the lottery that is the care system are not fit for purpose. Time for root and branch reform.

I have just had a conversation with an NHS physio who is quite upset that the unit he works in is unable to give patients the vital therapy they need to recover from life changing strokes.

NICE guidelines say they should get 3 hours therapy a day. He is lucky if he gets that in a week! He is sad, I am sad and disappointed and the physio is sad but as he says “that is how things are right now.”

The millions that are thrown at the NHS have made little difference. Also, what is the point of NICE?

Oh Primrose how upsetting for you both. Where DOES some of the NHS money go (and gets wasted). Maybe we need to get back to basics like years ago - do less, but do it properly?

What sort of treatments for what conditions would have to go to enable this, tho? What we can now treat has expanded so much.

FriedGreenTomatoes2. It is just awful. If I wasn’t so exhausted I would sit and cry about it😥

It is absolutely vital that stroke patients get physiotherapy asap after the stroke. Surely it makes economic sense too to get people walking and looking after themselves rather than paying out on careworkers, mobility aids, benefits, care homes etc etc.

There is a fully equipped gym there that nobody can use because some Manager has not signed it off as ready for use. It must have cost hundreds of thousands and sits there empty while patients are sitting in wheelchairs or laying on beds bored stiff.

Well they could stop putting stupid posters up about diversity and PRIDE for a start and spending time and money organising special events.

Read anything you like about Strokes and everything says therapy is essential.

Overhaul the whole system then because it clearly isn’t working.

I remember maybe 25-30 years ago if you needed it you could get NHS physio locally. You got hands on physio, there was equipment galore and even a small hydrotherapy pool. You didn’t have to wait too long either. This is in a fairly rural area and there were other physio centres dotted around.

If you agree to go there now (and most people won’t go because it is useless) it is just virtually bare rooms with one physio on duty who doesn’t even examine you. The couches have all gone, the exercise bars etc all gone and the hydrotherapy pool is empty. You tell the physio what your problem is and he gives you a photocopied sheet of instructions for exercise you can do at home. It is a disgrace.

When my DH had a broken leg, the elastic bands seemed to be a bit of weakened Marigold glove rubber!

He found an old scarf of mine offered far better resistance.

I am getting twice-weekly physio now, and have been for the past couple of months. It is on the NHS, and there are two physios in the room, which is described as a gymnasium. If everyone turned up there would be maybe six or seven patients present, but there are rarely more than four. Taxis have been sent for some of the non-attenders but they still don't attend.

Obviously I don't know their circumstance (and by definition they are all ill), and I can't offer solutions, but this is not the fault of the NHS. It seems very wasteful though.

I’d like that. But the prisons are full, so who would be released to make room for the knife- wielders?

It is the type of knives which are the problem. OH used to carry a knife as a Scout (1950s) and Father used to carry one as an electrician.There was not the slightest idea that they were dangerous. Dad needed a flick knife to use one handed to strip the wire he was holding in the other hand, These were banned in 60s

I would like to see Pylons removed. Water, Gas and telephone lines are often underground, There should be a national distribution system all using the same trunking, The technology to drill underground is already available , being used for train lines and tunnels. All a matter of scale.

I don't think there is enough to occupy teenagers. They can't afford gym membership or to go to football matches or concerts etc. So where are they supposed to meet up? Youth clubs and scouts etc are too okd fashioned
In my day we went to a coffee bar with pinball machines to "hang out". I'd like to see soft drink cafes or bars with wide screen tvs showing football etc and Internet access and games machines etc for today's teens

In our small market town, there are always moans that there is nothing for teenagers to do.

There’s plenty to do, but they don’t want to do it.

Scouts, army and air force cadets, (yes, old fashioned maybe), drama and theatre clubs, choirs, football, hockey, rugby, swimming pool, dance classes, taekwondo, ….

The parents of said teenagers are the ones who moan about nothing for their kids to do, but just expect someone else to do it. No offers from them to set things up or run things.

Skate parks seem like a good investment - the ones round here are certainly well-used. It's an olympic sport now too, & they cost much less than eg a swimming pool to maintain.
