for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.

And will FORCE the UK to choose.

(Capitals do not always represent shouting, but emphasis).

It’s a tough one for our government. I’m relieved Starmer is standing firm with Ukraine

An imperfect peace is far better than an eternal war.

Real problem is Ukraine is running out of manpower and Putin not.

The West didn't back Ukraine enough in winter of 2022 for a 2023 push and the result is stalemate but Russia can continue.

I agree up to a point but I don't trust Putin at all. I think he is determined to regain as much of the USSR as possible. It will start with Ukraine having to give up territory to Russia with Trump's blessing.

Actually, the biggest concern in the US is losing our rights, the possibility of a civil war and the fact that we may never have a free and fair election again.

Zelensky is a true patriot. He cares deeply about his country and people shouldn't forget he was an actor and comedian with no military or political exprience before he was voted in power. In this respect only he is similar to Trump.

Unlike Trump he always seem calm and gracious, though I am sure he must have had his moments but unlike Trump he is not on screen every moment of the day.

Putin invaded Ukraine because he felt Europe and NATO were weak following Brexit. We proved him wrong, and despite his manipulation of Trump and his attempts to manipulate UK politcs too, we should remain strong and united against this tyranny.

Trump is no patriot, his scorn and disdain for the American people is well recorded and he seems to admire Putin and sees an opportunity for himself to make money by aligning with Russia even indirectly.

Yes the situation is serious but I don't think is escalating- some sort of deal will be struck eventually but I fear it has been a high price to pay for the Ukrainian people.

Europe will survive despite Trump or Putin- our democracies and cultures and even economies are much older that the US and we still have far more in common with our continental families that our stateside ones.

👏👏👏👏

The UK must stick with Europe.

What’s happening in the Ukraine is an appalling.

Trump and Putin deserve each other but I fear, and feel sorry, for their citizens.

Cossy Thu 13-Feb-25 14:36:12

Ooops not an appalling, just appalling!

mokryna Thu 13-Feb-25 14:45:19

It is such a truly sad situation for Ukraine and Europe.

Trump just wants to look good as a peace maker and real estate entrepreneur.

Many, (not yet voted-in UK, ‘politicians’ ) want to cosy up to him. They follow him because it will line their pockets and not in the long run help UK citizens.

John Simpson. BBC

An alternative to Pres Trump’s Ukraine strategy: insist that Ukraine joins NATO and Russia stays out in the cold, until Putin agrees to pull back from some conquered territory and promises never to invade Ukraine again. Have Trump & Hegseth given up their best cards already?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Feb-25 16:46:23

Starmer: “Putin is the aggressor. Putin’s in breach of the UN Charter, in my view. And this conflict could be ended tomorrow if Putin withdrew his troops. And so for me, that would be the simplest and the quickest way to end this conflict”

Agree!
Just get out!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Feb-25 17:02:20

itv news is reporting that Keir Starmer is open to sending UK troops to Ukraine as peace keepers.

Europe must stand together.

I’ve just watched Victoria Derbyshire interviewing Sebastian Gorky, Trump’s senior director for counter terrorism on Newsnight. What an arrogant bully the man is. Typical of what’s happening in the Trump White House. Normal communication, civil discussions no longer expected

If we were still in the EU we wouldn’t have to make statements about where we stand as a country.

Former Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull: “When you see Trump with Putin, as I have on a few occasions, he’s like the 12-year-old boy that goes to high school and meets the captain of the football team. ‘My hero!’ It’s really creepy…the creepiness was palpable”

Victoria Derbyshire is the best Interviewer at the moment. She doesn't give up .

She is just amazing. Truly sickening and scary.

Gorky was around during the Brexit debate - he was just as ghastly then.

I’ll try and find it - but my iPad doesn’t do links.

Not sure why we're dramatically saying how we must stick with Europe.

Of course we will. How could we not? We're still in Europe. It's a no brainer

itv news is reporting that Keir Starmer is open to sending UK troops to Ukraine as peace keepers.

It's already been stated that Putin doesn't want anyone from NATO to be involved.
Don't have a reference now - not sure where I read/ heard it.
Might have been the Rory Stewart/ Alastair Campbell The Rest Is Politics

NotSpaghetti this came about in an interview with Robert Preston, apparently the French are also in agreement.
