Labour has cancelled elections and arrested people for their opinions; now they have the power to access everyone's iPhone. The damage they are doing to everything we hold dear is incalculable; sacred values like free speech, property rights, and democracy!

Blah blah blah. No, the government does not have the power to access everyone's iPhone. It's a shame it doesn't have more access tgo the dark web because law enforcers would find it easier to catch child porn, drug and people traffickers.

GCHQ do monitor most communications in the UK, I doubt the scurrilous threads in GN are much of a threat to national security. They do monitor activity on the “dark web” those accessing banned material are highly likely to get caught

What is it that you would want to send that doesn't automatically have end-to-end encryption under Apple's default standard date protectio, even if the default for a particular data category is in-transit encryption? How do you know that your recipient has activated ADP?

A proportion of UK politicians are not as smart as they think they are.

This is demonstrated by the media on a regular basis, at the moment it seems to be their inability to write an accurate CV

My criticism was of the spiteful way she referred to Yvette Cooper.

I’m an Apple user and have always felt a bit safer from hackers as a result (plus their genius on line support is superb)

I’m also someone who saw the way the video, then internet age facilitated horrific sexual abuse and exploitation of babies and children

It’s my understanding this government is aware of the extent of csa and wants to stop it. I trust Yvette Cooper shed loads more than Mr Musk who wants a free for all, no fact checking

Not the same thing but along similar lines, UK police have been unable to see what Axel Rudakubana was searching online before the Southport attack as they are locked in a lengthy US legal process to obtain the data from Google and Microsoft. The detective in charge of the case said it could take years.

What makes people feel so important that they think the government will be reading all their encrypted messages. What is in their messages that needs such a high level of encryption?

All the government wants is the ability to access encrypted messages where they have reason to believe that crimes are being committed and the safety of the state is at risk.

Are people on here really saying that they do not want paedophile rings investigate , drug dealers caught, criminal gangs bringing illegal immigrants into this country in small boats stopped, and terrorists foiled because if their encrypted messages were read their grandchildren might discover in advance what it is they are going to get for Christmas?

Police and security services already investigate communication traffic, and can phone tap if necessary. Why do GCHQ have all those many facilities in Cheltenham.

It is just that Apple has got an even higher level of encryption than anyone else that our security services cannot access.

You can bet your bottom dollar that Trump and his minions will make sure they get access to everything it attemts to hide.

I just think that people who are like me, not particularly technically minded, want reassurance that their passwords, Apple wallet, emails and family photos remain protected. That’s all that would concern me.

Apparently very few users use Advanced Data Protection. It’s actually risky for normal users to use it, not that they can now. There is a very good chance of keys being lost and losing access to all data. But of course the point is that we should have the choice.
