Not the same thing but along similar lines, UK police have been unable to see what Axel Rudakubana was searching online before the Southport attack as they are locked in a lengthy US legal process to obtain the data from Google and Microsoft. The detective in charge of the case said it could take years.

Axel Rudakunana was being monitored and had been interviewed but the police didn’t see him as a serious threat, they cant put him in prison because of what he might do.
There are probably more than a thousand others being monitored, picking out out the one that might attack a children’s dance school just is not realistic.

Conversations between Blair and his SPAD, Campbell, certainly endangered lives here in the UK and elsewhere.

My daughter works for the National Crime Agency. Some of the crimes they investigate are on a different scale from anything Blair and Campbell ever did. It's really nasty, sordid stuff, often involving international networks. Communications are key to the success of the networks, but unfortunately there is sometimes no way of monitoring the communications as a result of encrypted messages. They're not interested in spying on people's holiday snaps.

I find the whole oh it will be all fine why do people think they will be interested in them deeply patronising. As I have said repeatedly on these threads many of us know women who have to take legal action to protect their speech or who have had visits from the police for their speech. So many are instantly wary, trust was lost some time ago.
Oh and if we are being impolite, I found the threads about the Tories deeply tedious but I just skipped over them.

The government can’t fail to be aware of the social problems that underpin knife and other crime. Its policies are long term and aimed at reducing crime by effective early intervention.

The government can’t fail to be aware of the social problems that underpin knife and other crime. Its policies are long term and aimed at reducing crime by effective early intervention.

The elephant in the room is stop and search.

I think there should be more, many are against it.

Stop and Search is necessary but its history does raise concerns.

That’s true, but there is a culture of knife envy. Combat knives of all kinds are far more attractive to those who want knives than a kitchen knife is. There is no legitimate need for the vast majority of the population to own a combat knife at all.

Equating one of these vicious Zombie knives designed to do maximum damage to human flesh with one stab and twist, One bought with the purpose of killing or permananetly mutilate someone with ordinary household knives, is like comparing a pop gun with a building-destroying drone.

Apple can't allow a backdoor without the entire service being no longer secure to everyone. I don't think Yvette Cooper is up to speed with the workings of technology, which move far far faster than she can blink.

I heard that it would be removed from current users later. It would presumably take even a computer system a while to sort out UK users.

I have mixed feelings about this, largely because we don’t know how the situation will be used by future regimes, but it’s impossible to discuss on political threads when people use language like that.

Getting back to the OP, if Apple give governments (any government) a key to the back door of its encryption software, then the hackers will be following them in.

I don’t think Yvette Cooper is a one man band dreaming up ideas, is she? You can guarantee that if a system is discussed in the Liverpool Echo the cyber security services in the Home Office will know about it. We know about Apple because they have kicked back, but there are bound to be lots of different initiatives.
