On the contrary, I think he is taking advantage of the situation to make himself seem a better person than he actually is.
Pretty much how I feel about him. He has said some nasty things about Trump then there he is cozying up to him.
Who has scored a blinder during the last week.
The whole house (apart from Farage I think although he didn’t make a lot of sense) has praised his efforts.
People like Starmer known for what people say is a boring personality etc, come into their own in times of crises. He is a man without ego, a man of integrity and honesty. A man of intelligence and dependability.

I respect your opinions, but could you outline how you would like a PM to behave towards Donald Trump?

Sour grapes.
We've been accustomed day by day of attacks from a slew of hostile newspapers so it became the norm and have failed to see achievements. He is no different than he has always been.

Its called "politics".

Perhaps the re-election of POTUS Trump, will focus other politicians here and across the world to be mindful when saying, tweeting and writing less than complimentary things about other politicians
We now have a prime example of having to deal with a POTUS who the majority of our current governmental front bench have been less than complimentary ( I am being cautious with my language) and as someone said upthread this makes for uncomfortable situations.
Keir Starmer outclassed Trump 100%
Trump has no class whatsoever and I think Starmer used this to get Trump on side.

Being a leader of a country, whichever country it is, is a JOB!
All Starmer is doing is his job! He is able to act diplomatically, it’s part of his role. He has been honest about Trump and wasn’t cozying up to him.
Some people can simply not see past the end of their noses and are unable to accept that someone they dislike is doing a good job, at least in part.

😂😂😂😂😂
Primrose and mum2three I’m keen to hear how you think KS should have approached his meeting with Trump!

As am I. I wait with bated breath.
Are there on GN anyone who works in kindergarten or nursery classes, or children of the lower primary school classes? Particularly of children with learning difficulties plus personality disorders?
I would like to hear how they would deal with a child who is physically very strong but emotionally is highly vulnerable to criticism and craves approval and affection, and who mentally is not good at seeing the longterm (or even the medium or short-term) effect of their actions, but is very good at remembering for ever any hurts or slights he has received from anyone, and responding by using his considerable physical power against them.
Elegran, I suspect the child might spend time in isolation

What did Truss say about Macron she was asked ‘friend or enemy’? Good job that Starmer has been rebuilding our fractured relationship with Europe over the past few years.
Iam Isolation where there is no-one to be hurt by his tantrums, yes. He can't be completely isolated for the next 4 years, though.
What if his isolation is impossible in practice to achieve, as he must continue to be surrounded by his playmates, some of whom are copying his behaviour, and others are getting injured by the way he uses his toys as weapons to hit them with ?
He can interact with other children in the neighbourhood too, and them with him. What if another child with a strong personality becomes his friend, and influences him to grab toys with menaces from children who appear less assertive, and give them to his "friend"? How to dissuade him from doing this without the dissuader getting labelled his "enemy" and receiving the full force of the kicking, biting, and beating over the head with the solid metal model of a cold-war tank?
He's also a big animal friend too!
I can't help thinking that if Trump does come for a state visit, they should set Princess Anne on him.
I cannot believe so many comments in support of KS. Certainly does not have my support. Can't wait to see him and his cronies gone.

Yes in the midst of what is a confusing and difficult time Starmer came to the fore and proved he can be the grown up in the room.

Mamie
In the Tom Baldwin biography, he says something along the lines of the fact that Keir Starmer has been under-estimated, then over-performed all his life.
Spot on Mamie!
I can see why Starmer gets underestimated, he is relatively quiet and unobtrusive certainly next to Trump, but what a fantastic guy, I am so glad he is in charge not the last few PM's. I feel as safe as it's possible to feel with him in charge.
Primrose and mum2three How would you deal with the "child" in my previous posts?
Shutting him in his room won't work. He has the keys and will just come straight back out. His friends will still be at work on him, the one with the ferocious teddy- bear and the one with the wind-up cars, and others who see how his actions are to their advantage, all encouraging him to continue.

Not a cuddly one!
Seriously?
Elegran, your post reflects discussions I’ve been having with friends who taught in special schools, secure units, pupil referral units and a friend who is a forensic psychologist who worked in prisons and others with relevant work experience. Some people are so dangerous they are incarcerated
Trump and Vance can pass for normal - very scary. Starmer and other leaders have to work with them but diplomacy and straight communication out the window
