I think Ukraine has become his Falklands.
He has stepped up though.
My thoughts entirely. It's amazing how a war can save a PM.
Who has scored a blinder during the last week.
The whole house (apart from Farage I think although he didn’t make a lot of sense) has praised his efforts.
People like Starmer known for what people say is a boring personality etc, come into their own in times of crises. He is a man without ego, a man of integrity and honesty. A man of intelligence and dependability.

From Wikipedia
“Starmer served as a human rights adviser to the Northern Ireland Policing Board and the Association of Chief Police Officers, and was also a member of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's Death Penalty Advisory Panel from 2002 to 2008.[2][11] The Northern Ireland Board was an important part of bringing communities together following the Good Friday Agreement, and Starmer later cited his work on policing in Northern Ireland as being a key influence on his decision to pursue a political career: "Some of the things I thought that needed to change in police services we achieved more quickly than we achieved in strategic litigation... I came better to understand how you can change by being inside and getting the trust of people".[30] Starmer represented Croatia at the genocide hearings before the International Court of Justice at The Hague in 2014, arguing that Serbia wanted to seize a third of Croatian territory during the 1990s war and eradicate the Croatian population.”
His experience in these things is standing him in good stead in these troubled times. Thank goodness we have someone like him as PM.
wow!! What a cv!!! No wonder he's doing so well. His calm rational persona is doing great, just what we need right now

Yes, a great performance by our PM and King. Really showed how it should be done. I am sure KCIII will step up to the mark when Trump arrives. They are well prepared for such occasions. Better keep Anne away though. Maybe KS will get the Nobel prize.
Now why would you want to keep Princess Anne away, if Trump pays a visit to Britain?
I imagine she is more than able to put Trump in his place, and personally, I would just love to see her do so.
I said the same yesterday in that Starmer may seem dull and boring but he is intelligent, measured, incisive and he probably rang rings around Trump last week ! He would never have been spoken to in the way they spoke to Zelensky!
His choice of friends is not ideal. He needs ones who can persuade him that life is better for everyone if you have consideration for others. It may be too late for the lesson.
I suspect he finds that concept impossible to grasp because his father drummed it into him (with beatings and humiliation) that competition was good and that he had lost. He thinks only losers don't win all transactions.
That was about Trump, not Starmer! posts are coming thick and fast and the focus changes with them.
On Starmer - "Starmer later cited his work on policing in Northern Ireland as being a key influence on his decision to pursue a political career: "Some of the things I thought that needed to change in police services we achieved more quickly than we achieved in strategic litigation... I came better to understand how you can change by being inside and getting the trust of people"
This is why he is working more on getting Trump to trust him than on getting Trump to see him as "the enemy". He will do it by the way he treats Trump, but he will also keep his word and his promises to both Trump and Zelensky and everyone else. He will not make treaties and alliances and then break them.
I think Keir is calm and honest and a proper statesman. I wish him well in dealing with the disgusting bullying nature of the Trump regime.
I was so very proud of the PM! A breath of fresh air amidst the US a tornado called Donald Trump! I’m so proud of Europe and those who are stepping up I truly am. I am sn American living here in England for the past 27 years with my daughter and contributing to this country through my efforts as an addiction therapist. I’m so ashamed of the United States and so very proud of the UK and the other countries who are stepping up!!
As a life long Tory I say Well done Sir Keir!!!
I'm glad it isn't Corbyn or Johnson in No. 10 at this time.

On the contrary, I think he is taking advantage of the situation to make himself seem a better person than he actually is.
Well, that certainly can't be said about your man Trump

I posted this on one of the N & P threads (sorry I have fuzzy brain due to being confined to barracks)
Perhaps the re-election of POTUS Trump, will focus other politicians here and across the world to be mindful when saying, tweeting and writing less than complimentary things about other politicians
We now have a prime example of having to deal with a POTUS who the majority of our current governmental front bench have been less than complimentary ( I am being cautious with my language) and as someone said upthread this makes for uncomfortable situations.
Just a quick reminder that Trump's own VP, Vance, said some pretty awful things about his new boss, and is now not only cosying up to him, he is out Trumping him.
I know HousePlantQueen
I imagine it’s a case of keep your friends close, and your enemies closer with the current POTUS and his VP
Whilst not agreeing with everything Keir Starmer says I’ve been very glad to have a mature, calm and educated prime minister, bit of a relief I think
* HPQ* 'he is out Trumping him'. He is and Trump hasn't noticed yet that Vance is vying to be top dog
Yes Keir Starmer behaved in a very statesmanlike way and showed up the appalling two year old tantrums of DT and the bullying of Vance. He must have taken some strong anti-sickness tablets to be able to cope with the pair of them!! No wonder Farage is drawn to them, similar attitude. Thank goodness we had far better to offer. I just wonder why we would want to be in any, never mind special, relationship with Trump and co. ?
Agree he did well. But he was advised what to say and do by his team plus various Government top civil servants and agencies.
He presented it well as expected from a KC.
Let hope he can keep this momentum up as he will be judged in the future for home politics not international ones.

Those are my thoughts too, he’s very good on the international stage but not too happy with him on the domestic front.
All credit to him tho for handling things well recently.A pity that the King’s invitation to him came last week, if only Starmer had known what was to come the next day!
I simply can’t imagine how Boris would have handled things but think that Sunak would have behaved creditably too.

He may have to fight Elon for the job😬😲

I cannot believe so many comments in support of KS. Certainly does not have my support. Can't wait to see him and his cronies gone.
That’s ok, each to their own.
Who are you hoping to replace “Starmer and his cronies” with?
Stiff, I understand you may not support Starmer’s direction of travel in some policies. Are you saying you also don’t support the decision to improve our defence and work constructively with allies to protect Ukraine (and end the war)

Kings Counsel are extremely intelligent people. They prepare their complex cases quickly and withiut being advised what to say and do.
Starmer will be working co-operatively but won’t need or want anyone telling him to say or don

Watching Camilla over the years, I suspect that she will have the most difficulty trying not to laugh.
Oh dear, I think you may be right! He's not funny at all but he does have that effect on some people.
Yes, well done Sir Keir, you've proved to be a steady hand on the tiller and yes, well done Charles too, this is when the Monarchy comes into its own.
As my Gran used to say 'not funny ha ha, but funny peculiar'. The definitely fits the Orange one
Starmer is exactly the right person in post for dealing with an over inflated ego like Trump and the extreme right wing of America. Trump really is dense and dangerous and more friend of Russia than of Europe. We need to step up and never think we can rely on the USA to hold up democratic and moral principles. (Seriously dread to think how we would fare if Boris Johnson or Liz Truss had been in post - both admirers of Trump and went to his Inauguration. Or if Farage had - so keen as he has been to work with Trump and spends more time with him than his constituents). For Trump - money is God. We need a leader who doesn’t think like that)
