Had Trump rattled the tiger's cage?

Can’t see actual warfare. A bit more subtle I’d think!

Yes.
It's on its way already.

China has never been aggressive in a military way, except for Taiwan, so far, it’s only recently that its military has become a match for the US.
Sanctions on Russia has pushed them closer to China which is not a good thing for the west.

Most of Chinas military is concentrated on defence and controlling its own population, It doesn’t have a global reach as the US does, it doesn’t concern itself with other nations politics as long as it gets the resources it wants

MaizieD Thu 06-Mar-25 13:12:19

On the Chinese military non aggression oint I'm inclined to agree with you, David (now there's a surprise)

I’d forgotten Tibet, more to the point there are several border disputes with India as well, in the future we do need to watch how China is dominating other countries.

The US has further annoyed China by dropping "Washington does not support independence for Taiwan" from it's website.
China believes this will open the doors to those campaigning for Taiwan to be independent.

nanna8 Fri 07-Mar-25 04:20:20

They already refer to it as the Chinese republic of Taiwan, according to their mail. Giving back Hong Kong didn’t go so well, either. It has never been the same since. On balance I’d sooner be a vassal of the USA than China any tick of the clock. Even with Trump in charge.

What a pity more people don't think ahead and consider the consequences of their actions!
We now rely too much on China for our goods and this makes us very vulnerable.
This government should be helping British firms instead of encouraging more imports.

It's all down to money. Goods made in China are often cheaper but I would rather pay a bit more if I could buy the same thing made in the UK.

The inevitable is a leveling up of their lifestyle and a leveling down of ours, so it all depends whether you are willing to reduce your lifestyle to improve lifestyle in China.

I don’t think it’s going to be about reducing our lifestyle for most people in the UK, it’s going to be about getting rid of excess. Electronics manufacture is our one major weakness in Europe, everything else we can buy made either in the UK or Europe - with a bit of effort on our part to seek it out.

If you had any idea David, of how China tortured Tibetans, destroyed their monasteries and culture, insisted they only speak chinese, and killed hundreds of thousands in their genocide you might be slightly more aware of their potential to harm other countries.. not just India

AGAA4 Fri 07-Mar-25 08:17:27

Amongst the people I know some are refusing to buy from China. I know I have quite a few items that were made in China and I will be more careful in future.

Have you forgotten this too, David1949?
China has been accused of committing crimes against humanity and possibly genocide against the Uyghur population and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups in the north-western region of Xinjiang.

Human rights groups believe China has detained more than one million Uyghurs against their will over the past few years in a large network of what the state calls "re-education camps", and sentenced hundreds of thousands to prison terms.

Not at all. Trump knows China is the threat. Hence he has managed to get the world's largest chip manufacturer to build their factory in Texas. Lured them away from Taiwan. Other large companies now which need chips in their products will no doubt also move to America. America will grow. China will lose business. Very good for the whole world. China is a threat to us all. People need to wake up to this real threat. Starter most definitely needs to wake up!

And you don't think this might be regarded as provocation? - as one of the types of war that China is referring to?

Hence he has managed to get the world's largest chip manufacturer to build their factory in Texas. - really? A bit of a miracle in just a few weeks!

It has been welcomed by the Taiwanese company's CEO,
but this could possibly benefit China and weaken Taiwan. Opposition leaders there are concerned this could leave Taiwan vulnerable and, let's face it, Trump will only be doing this if it's beneficial to him. He won't care at all about Taiwan.

The firm is Samsung and has been in the USA since 1978.

It was made possible by the CHIPS and Science Act, which was enacted by Biden in 2022

Read details here

"JUL 26, 2024
New Samsung Semiconductor Plant in Taylor, Texas
An investment by Samsung, spurred by funding from the CHIPS and Science Act, will create a new semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas, to complement the company’s previous investment in chips in Austin, Texas."

Credit where its due, nothing to do with Trump

China will use any excuse/non-excuse to make a land grab for Taiwan. Should they succeed then Trump will use THAT as an excuse to make a land grab for Greenland and thus the world descends into greed-driven chaos.

Thanks Donald - you're about to open Pandora's Box......

Tibet happened 1951 to 58 persecution of Muslims is happening now, it’s a fact of life, nobody cares, we all buy Chinese goods, we even dodge our own taxes to get them.

we even dodge our own taxes [to get Chinese goods]. Really? How?

AGAA4 Fri 07-Mar-25 12:05:54

China wants Taiwan. Trump has unsettled many countries China included. He wants Greenland. Putin wants Ukraine.
Are we going to have three big superpowers taking over the world.
I fear for my grandchildren.

^we even dodge our own taxes [to get Chinese goods]^. Really? How?

By ordering direct from China, Schein, Alibaba and many online retailers it avoids VAT on purchases, the US has stopped that avoidance, I havn’t heard the UK has yet.

Gifts declared at less than £40 are exempt, that does not apply to purchases from overseas companies. In practice everything is declared at less it’s very difficult to prove original value in China.

Barleyfields Fri 07-Mar-25 16:09:52

Chinese sellers on the likes of Shein/Temu have to add 20% for vat to goods shipped to the UK and Shein/Temu have to account for it to HMRC. So if anyone buys from those sites (I don’t) they are not dodging UK taxes. I am aware that some sellers pretend to be registered in the UK to avoid that, but it’s a separate issue and not ‘tax dodging’ by the buyer.
