Trump USAID cuts hit Afghan Women

A while ago we had a thread on the Afghan girls who had escaped to continue their education in Oman with their inspirational leader.

Now

More than 80 Afghan women who fled the Taliban to pursue higher education in Oman now face imminent deportation back to Afghanistan, following the Trump administration's sweeping freeze on foreign aid programmes

"Funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), their scholarships were abruptly terminated after a funding freeze ordered by President Donald Trump when he returned to office in January

"It was heart-breaking," one student told the BBC, speaking anonymously for fear of reprisals. "Everyone was shocked and crying. We've been told we will be sent back within two weeks"

Its not just them: US aid funding had enabled thousands of Afghan women to study abroad or continue education online, but many of these programmes are now suspended.

Yet another example of utter thoughtlessness - not examining what USAID was spent on, being selective.

The BBC has seen emails sent to the 82 students informing them that their scholarships have been "discontinued" due to the termination of the programme and USAID funding

It's tragic for those girls. A chance of a better life has been swept away.
I his first few weeks as Potus Trump has caused chaos, uncertainty and heartache for many.
The only winners are the rich and powerful.

I hope some powerful interests take up their case soon in the USA, surely it's something there would be support on from the public? It surely not politically contentious?

And to find out via an email, and the USAID site is down -
😡

Not an advocate of violence but hoping the next attempt is a couple of inches from the ear in the right direction!

😂 only problem would be that Vance would step up. 🥺

As will our cuts to aid - which will affect so many, especially girls education, vaccinations and other medical and food aid.

Thanks for highlighting this on International Women’s Day.
My heart breaks for these women.

Excellent use for donations.

Oman is a very wealthy country, it can afford to let let these women continue their education without USAID.

Wyllow3 Sat 08-Mar-25 13:59:49

If I recall correctly from the thread, this particular school were invited under USAID to the USA in the summer to experience different ways of life. The freedom for women in the USA.

Well now they do know!

That may be true GG13 but hardly the point. The point is the brutality of sudden cuts and the lack of compassion. For example, if what you say is true and Oman would take over,

then surely the point would be to negotiate with Oman first then make the cuts?

Does anyone think Trump cares!

Wyllow3 Sat 08-Mar-25 14:03:50

(Although women in Oman have made progress, there are still restrictions - just checked it out)

No, we just need to hold him to account ...

Yes, our cuts to foreign aid will also hurt vulnerable people like these women

It’s because of Trump that US and UK forces pulled out of Afghanistan so suddenly and left Afghan women to their fate sad.

Biden's Afghanistan withdrawal was over 2 years ago.

Current POTUS is making USAID cuts, now.

As does mine!

It would do us all good to remember how fortunate we actually are in this country, despite everything,

Wyllow3 Sat 08-Mar-25 14:29:52

The withdrawal was when these girls made their escape, Norah, and it was to Bidens credit that USAID then picked up the funding.

Agreed.

Much of the support to Afghanistan from USAID would have been food (World food Program). A way for USA farmers to use USAID to "sell" excess food. Of course good for farmers and recipients.

I've just read a fascinating book on what it is to be a woman in Afghanistan. The Dressmaker of Khair Khana.

I believe that Biden had to go ahead with promises that had been made by the Trump administration ( I’m happy to be corrected). I was angry with Biden at the time until I read this.

Trump arranged that withdrawl. He went around Afghans government and negotiated with the Taliban.

Yes the withdrawal was horrible, but Trump had a large hand in it and is not resolved from responsibility just because it happened on Bidens watch.

This is, of course, horrible for these girls. But I can't imagine anyone is surprised? He is a racist misogynistic with a special affinity for hurting Muslims.

What he is doing harm women in the US and around the world is unforgivable.

Of course he arranged it, he just failed to finish before his term ended. President Biden quickly (perhaps too quickly) withdrew forces, ISIS Abbey Gate attack, disaster- bad mark for President Biden.

Awful, profoundly depressing. How anybody can call him inspiring is beyond me.
