Why is Musk going - and when.

Officially according to the White House Musk

“"Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete” (thats the end of May)

Politico however points out to the many tensions and conflicts caused by him in the administration, to the point where Musk is becoming more of a liability than an asset.

It can be argued that he has acted as s shield for Trump on the DOGE cuts, but he’s also made an almighty mess with some of them that has created contradictory messages and unknown effects that could last for a long time and can still “rebound” and give cause for law suits and demonstrations against the administration.

Whether it will stop him making pronouncments on X how we in Europe should conduct ourselves, and stop his interference in our domestic matters, including possibly giving large amounts of money to affect UK politics, campaigning for example for Tommy Robinson, is another matter.

SKY News is reporting that Elon Musk is on a 130 day contract as a Special Government Employee

It is also speculating as to whether or not he will stay on after the 130 days.

It doesn't matter if or when he leaves at this point. He had already destroyed our institutions and left a wake of destruction.

It will take decades to recover, if we ever do.

Wyllow3 Thu 03-Apr-25 14:21:41

Yes, there is an ambiguity about it ie could it be renewed as in when DOGE's work could be said to have been done

Although in the Politico article there is lots of talk about Musk moving on for other interests ie back to his businesses from Trump himself as well as others by mutual agreement.

I found this pretty chilling article where we meet some of Musk's DOGE team. As well as non political experience they nearly all have financial connections to Musk.

Interestingly, Musk views some of the ‘entrenched’ government suppliers (eg Microsoft) as part of the problem and is looking to bring in more innovative, fleet-of-foot tech providers to replace them. Part of me is interested to see if this can work. I know from past experience, that the public sector has institutional barriers that inhibit use of more innovative technologies. Some good stuff might come from. But there are lots of areas of the public sector where the system really just can’t afford to fail. These guys come from an environment, where the imperative is to fail fast and move on. Getting the balance is what’s going to be really tricky.

No doubt any new "system" will happen to belong to one of Musks techie mates. Imagine that..... Microsoft being co founded by Bill Gates - and he did give some funding to the democrats in the last election (it was the first time that he has openly been "political")

I'm in the US. I have no doubt it will take twenty years to undo this damage from the ugly little turd.

glasshalffullagain Fri 04-Apr-25 20:34:08

Tech multi-billionaire Musk has posted a series of messages on his social media site X, accusing Sir Keir Starmer of failing to prosecute gangs that systematically groomed and raped young girls, and calling for safeguarding minister Jess Phillips to be jailed

Anybody who enjoyed joining in with this care to comment?

You don’t like him much then!

He’s started the ball rolling and caused chaos, but. Has a very short attention threshold and is bored already. He will move on and cause chaos elsewhere.

Hyperbole much?

I didn’t engage ever. 🤷‍♀️

Having engaged in several threads on this topic glasshalffullagain - there was one recently about Musk, Tommy Robinson and that topic, its a no thanks unless it gets tangled up in some recent stuff where Musk tries to apply pressure on the UK with some edict or other.

It is not hyperbole. imaround is right regarding the wake of destruction - the reputation of the USA as far as the rest of the world is concerned has been very seriously eroded, and it will take many years to recover. Trump has made history, there is no doubt about that.

Cheers for that. Always there, ready to help.

In light of the news that Musk is bailing out, I wondered if any of those so impressed by his sudden interest in abused girls would care to comment further?

Maybe not.

Musk has caused chaos in the US so job done and he can go.
In the UK he is like an irritating little wasp that tries to ruin your picnic.

Is he going before Trump gives him the push? After his defeat in Winsconsin.

Would that make it a thread about a thread?

Are you asking posters who commented on that thread to comment on here?
I'm a bit confused

He's on a short-term contract, just long enough to cause utter mayhem.

In yesterday's New York Times:

"E.U. Prepares Major Penalties Against Elon Musk’s X

European regulators are considering fining X more than $1 billion, after weighing the risks of further antagonizing Mr. Musk and President Trump.

It’s hard to see the “end game”, others have refereed to the US as “leader of the free world”, because of their military power “protector” too.

There isnt likely to be any other one leader, so is all this about us paying protection money to the US, taxing us for its leadership and protection?

Wyllow3 Sun 06-Apr-25 12:16:24

Protection against whom?

Seems to me the US is getting less "Free" and is going into isolation, and the power Trump imagined he had in "sorting" Ukraine and the Middle East showed him the limits of his powers.

The US is free enough, we can travel there, they can travel here freely, they are not going to lock my sister in law up for supporting Harris.

Protection against Russia or any other invaders, Europe can do very little on its own and won’t be able to for at least 10 yrs.

Of course we could decide not to do business with Trumps US, no exports, no imports, until that day arrives we make a deal with him.

It’s not hyperbolic, FGT.

He literally destroyed institutions, particularly those aimed at helping the poor or minorities. Medical and scientific research institutions such as the NIH have been destroyed. The Education Dept has been destroyed. It’s only hyperbolic to those that have the luxury of watching from an ocean away. Iamaround is in the States. I think she’d know hmm
