Bit of a shock to find Dan Norris my MP has been arrested and suspended from the Labour Party following allegations of rape and child sex offences. I thought it was dishonest to take two salaries, one as WECA Mayor and one as an MP. Constituents complained he didn’t reply to them when they wrote to him, but this is something else if true. He is an NSPCC Child Protection Officer as well.

I keeep hearing this about him being a good MP. Like Johnson was a clever man. Do we have anything to support this at all?

If by the word clever you mean intelligent then Boris Johnson is a clever man.Intelligent men sometimes do stupid things tho.
For evidence of JRM actually being well thought of by his constituency you would have to ask them, google may help in the quest if you have the time.

Paedophiles will seek to enter professions that give them ready access to children

What Dan Norris has been charged with, is infinitely more serious than some Reform plonker saying Jimmy Savile is innocent and it is all lies.

We will have Jacob Rees-Mogg back in Parliament within the year representing his previous constintuency.

Spot on

^Run it by me, what's good about Mogg again?^

By all accounts he was a good constituency MP.

Presumably it was the general swing towards Labour which meant he was ousted.
At the time Dan Norris said ""This is a victory for integrity"

Hollow laugh.

Norris has not been found guilty of the allegations, GN's.

Of course some things transcend politics and this is one of them.

Utterly sickening.

This seems a pretty balanced view of what constituents have to say about Mogg. www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/jacob-rees-moggs-new-cringe-9761654

Why have some GNetters hijacked my post to denigrate Jacob Rees Mogg? I was not writing about JRM but about Dan Norris MP and WECA Mayor. According to The Telegraph they have seen documents relating to his alleged bullying and harassment of staff whilst Mayor. It is claimed tax payers money was used to pay off staff complaining. If true it is very damning.

Apologies, I was just responding to rather persistent questioning by another poster.

The only connection is that Norris ousted Rees-Mogg as MP for NE Somerset. It has to be pointed out that there was a boundary change in 2024 too.

Wyllow3 Mon 07-Apr-25 10:33:12

Well, we can't stop thread drift but it was introduced on Page 1

where the allegations about Norris were repeated and his election rival Mogg was alluded to as the "perfect gentleman" clearly as a contrast - although they are still allegations.

so then a riff on Mogg started where GN's felt Mogg was not he was cracked up to be either....

It appears Starmer knew of and ignored allegations about Norris last June. Clearly he should not have been permitted to stand as MP.

Ilovecheese Tue 08-Apr-25 15:26:48

But surely he was one of Starmer's "quality candidates".
Good job he never stood on a picket line or Starmer would never have backed him.

Wyllow3 Tue 08-Apr-25 15:33:58

Are you referring to this allegation in the Telegraph?

"Starmer ‘ignored’ calls to investigate MP accused of bullying
Labour leader was told Dan Norris faced legal action over bullying complaint at charity, according to Andy Knott"

It's behind a pay block, but clearly doesn't refer to the allegations of child abuse and rape offences. I feel the need for more verified information apart from a hostile news story here before

"Clearly he should not have been permitted to stand as MP"

Really? Like Starmer ignored so called grooming gangs and the Saville accusations?

It was one headline in The Telegraph which I couldn’t read because of the pay wall. Now able to read a bit more and it seems it is the bullying and harassment that Starmer was made aware of.

Disagree away. People are multi faceted & that's a scientific fact. No-one is all bad. Like no-one is all good. We're all just learning.

I'm not denying it might have happened, but you've given no evidence, can you give a reference? How can we make an assessment?

Well because Dan Norris has not been found guilty he's just been charged. It's not really a story & there's nothing else to report.
Rees Mogg is a known twat & people have to have something to talk about 😂

eazybee Wed 09-Apr-25 09:42:25

Keir Starmer was warned in writing that Dan Norris had been accused of bullying and harassment in June last year before he was elected in the General Election. He was informed by Andy Knott, a former charity boss, who is suing Mr. Norris and the League against Cruel Sports, claiming he was forced out as Chief Executive for refusing to accept Labour's action on trail hunting. He blames Starmer for allowing Norris to stand as Labour candidate knowing there were legal charges in process.
Norris is also accused of bullying and harassment by West of England Authority, and also spending £10,000 of public money on a self-promoting advert, and of sexual offences referred by another Police force, (no further details given.)
Paraphrased from DT 8.4.25.

What a shame you have to resort to vulgar language when you seek to express your opinion, Nana49.

Casdon Wed 09-Apr-25 09:59:04

So as suspected eazybee the assertion that Starmer was aware in June last year that Norris has been involved in sexual offences against children is unrelated to the Telegraph article. Thanks for confirming that.

It may have escaped the notice of the Telegraph that even if Starmer was made aware of another potential case against Norris, the candidates for the elections had been selected well prior to June, as the election was on 4th July? Whether Starmer should have taken action at that point, when there was no substantiated information except the word of a displaced chief executive who presumably has an axe to grind is doubtful.

TerriBull Wed 09-Apr-25 10:08:06

Maybe "the known twat" could be the lesser of two evils in such a context, and I suspect it would be a story if the aforementioned "twat" or indeed any other "twats" whatever their political persuasion were at the centre of such a controversy. Depending on the outcome, this Labour MP could well morph into such a definition and join the ranks of his predecessor. As there is an enormous spectrum of behaviour that goes into the constitution of "A twat" and it does seem Mr Norris may well have some of the defining characteristics. Strangely they're not confined to one political partyhmm

Mollygo Wed 09-Apr-25 10:13:18

Neatly put, TerriBull.
