Has been hit with an arrest warrant in Bangladesh for corruption charges.

Does this involve extradition? I’ve no idea.

But whatever, it’s not a good look. I wonder what Starmer thinks about it. They are very friendly apparently.

That’s okay Wyllow. Pax. 😁

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 21:06:29

True Magenta8 it was a silly aside from me. Perhaps best to never judge a book by its cover. Or something. 😊

Can a sitting MP be extradited?

Wyllow3 Mon 14-Apr-25 10:21:36

All I could find was "The UK lists Bangladesh as a 2B extradition country - meaning clear evidence must be presented before ministers and judges make a decision.

It's all very complicated/under dispute relating to her aunt (who was the PM and does seem to have been corrupt) and some land ownership. Some commentators in Bangladesh are saying it's a political gambit, others....

So I'm honestly not sure what should or will happen with these allegations.

Starter will no be loyal to anyone that might harm his reputation. She will be on her own and unsupported in this.

Iam64 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:54:08

Would you expect loyalty towards a friend who deceived you?

MayBee70, could you arrange for your theme tune, the arrival of the Queen of Sheba, to play every time you post?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:02:01

😂😂😂
Iam thank you. We have exchanged pm’s in the past and you are aware of my history re the Labour Party.
No further explanation from me is necessary….
I support Keir Starmer now.

That would be good. One of my favourite pieces of music...grin

If there is evidence that she has broken the law or broken parliamentary rules, then he would be right not to support her. Standards have to be upheld, surely. We have had too many years of transgressions staying under the radar, so it’s not about him, it’s about the reputation of the party, and of all politicians. I’d like to see that standard upheld going forward, whoever is in power.

“Ms Siddiq was approached outside of her home by Sky News on Monday and told the broadcaster: “I can’t dignify this politically motivated smear campaign with any comment”.

‘Trying to harass me’
She went on to allege that the ACC was “trying to harass me”, adding: “There is “no evidence I’ve done anything wrong”.

It comes after Bangladesh demanded that Interpol issue a Red Notice to Ms Siddiq if she does not attend a court hearing in Dhaka this month.

The former treasury minister is accused of illegally receiving a plot of land from her despot aunt’s government.

A Bangladeshi court issued an arrest warrant against Ms Siddiq on Sunday and expects her to comply by April 27.”

We all await developments on this story.

Wyllow3 Mon 14-Apr-25 15:15:50

There is a distinct possibility that, given the politics in Bangladesh, the charges are questionable.

Wiki notes

"The force is characterised by political patronage and a culture of impunity. International businesses have said that the Bangladeshi police force is one of the world's least reliable".

I completely agree that corruption is not acceptable but clearly we - and the PM of any party where there are these quite rare issues - have to wait for full information.

as I quoted above, correct procedure in the UK is ""The UK lists Bangladesh as a 2B extradition country - meaning clear evidence must be presented before ministers and judges make a decision

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 14-Apr-25 15:45:15

Thank you Wyllow.

I think governments are now far more on the ball as regards corruption than they used to be. 15 conservatives, including an ex MP, Craig Williams, who was an aid to Rishi Sunak, have been charged with betting offences

as a result of knowing the election date last year before the date was publicly announced

A Gambling Commission enquiry has just announced the charges. Some suspensions, it’s not clear if all have been suspended yet.

Iam64 Mon 14-Apr-25 16:15:13

Thanks Wyllow , I expect we’d have a break out of consensus in agreeing corruption is totally unacceptable. I agree with your concerns about politics in Bangladesh

And people in glass houses should Think On, 15 conservatives arrested on betting offences

My hackles have been raised alarmingly reading this thread!
Simply the mention of her smug name gives me the ickles.
What a arrogant piece of work she is. 🤨

How is she arrogant? (Genuine question)

Ilovedogs22 Tue 15-Apr-25 13:53:23

Hi Wyllo3, in answer to your question I'll try to explain why she'
appears arrogant.
I think that she presents as if she is God' gift to the universe.
She is so very cocky and full of herself, there is no humility!
As soon as any camera is in sight she zooms into it, delighting us mear mortals to her fake, awful saccharine rictus grin!
As I said arrogant & cocky too.😶

I always thought that she appeared to be a good constituency MP and was very helpful/supportive to the Radcliffe family when they were so badly let down by Johnson.

Balancing personal loyalty to a self-described good friend with whom he's been on holiday against mounting public and political pressure.

Would this be the same Keir Starmer (his deputy at the time) who claimed he only backed Jeremy Corbyn to become Prime Minister in the 2019 general election because he was certain that the left-wing Labour leader’s bid was doomed anyway. He was grilled by Beth Rigby who described his “catalogue of broken promises and changed positions”.

Wyllow3 Tue 15-Apr-25 15:29:29

I've read here wiki entry and watched bits of U tube. She's certainly a confident speaker, and personable presentation: I didn't see arrogance, but I haven't watched a lot.

The Bangladeshi accusations (info from the wiki report) are riddled with problems because the chief prosecutor was a political opponent to her Aunts' government in a corrupt system. Pretty difficult to disentangle.
