I truly hope Carney wins! I think it’ll be good for Canada and deal strong relationships with the majority of the rest of the world and he’ll stand up to Trump & Co.

The world needs leaders who will stand up to Trump and Putin.

I think Canada is much closer to European values and ideas.

I heard a good report of pros and cons and it seems to be unclear if his time out of the country may affect the result. He lived in both USA and UK for some time.

And links with the UK aren't 100% positive because of the monarchy (who obviously lots of people think should be supporting Canada in the Trump tariffs thing).

Personally I don't know Canadian politics so it's only what I've heard/read.

Their description. "Mark Carney is likely to win the general election after an "unpredictable" Trump has compelled Canadians to vote Liberal, says former head of communications to Conservative Canadian PM Stephen Harper Andrew McDougall."

Until the tariffs came along it looked as if Pierre Poilievre the conservative government would win and some of his supporters looked upon the USA with more favour than Trudeau's Liberals. (he had a "small government, tax cuts" approach) and had MAGA support.

Things have changed - Trudeau was unpopular in the end and had to resign but Trump came along not only with tariffs but declining Canada should be a 51st State of the USA.
So great interest and significance in the result.

His boisterous rallies, attracting more than 10,000 people in his political heartland of Alberta, has some pundits wondering whether the polls may have been underestimating his true level of support!

If Canadians seriously see Carney as a "problem solver" then I suggest they haven't bothered to look at his dreadful record. It really is hard to comprehend why that nation would consider for a millisecond voting for him after ten thoroughly incompetent years of Trudeau. What are they thinking?!!

Carney has been criticised by some Liberals as taking the Party more towards the right, I think he is addressing those concerns by a shift in policy.

Not surprisingly, The Guardian gives "Liberals favoured to beat Conservatives in contest influenced by anger over threats to sovereignty and growing trade war".

It's looks like polls differ - anyway, whatever the different polls say, personally I do hope Carney wins.

He was featured in the Saturday Radio 4 7pm slot where they give the backgrounds and influences on different politicians which was valuable to hear.

Many people think his record is valuable! Its clear what their thinking is or the Liberals wouldnt be experiencing the resurgence in support.....

I’m a Canadian who has always voted conservative. This time we will be voting liberal,we hope Mark Carney wins as do many of our friends and neighbours.If Trudeau was still in power there is no way we would vote liberal. Carney is the right man to deal with Trump.

It’s an amazing feat for the Liberals to even be in with a shout of winning, given they trailed the Conservatives by 20 points for almost a year, and it seemed a certainty that there would be a Conservative government this time. I’m not up to speed with Canadian politics, but surely it has to be largely thanks to the giant Wotsit next door.

The Conservatives were addressing dissatisfaction with economic and social concerns that they felt the Liberals has let grow, and a new government certainly has to address these.

But as you say, the giant wotsit's tariffs will make these home issues worse not better, make it harder for a government to address, so its hardly surprising that Carney, with a move towards more middle ground domestic politics, has gained momentum.

Poilievre's cautious support of Trump before the wotsit got out of hand will now count against him except from those who have all along leaned towards a MAGA view.

It just shows how ill thought out Trump's policies are. If he had had any real political cunning he would have held off declarations of 51st States and heavy tariffs until after the elections?

However (asking Llamedos13 here) how would Conservatives have reacted to the 51st State idea and tariff wars whenever it was made?

When I read you post the first thought I get is "but FGT has a really strong bias". Is there any chance of referencing your sources so we can make up our own minds?

Mark Carney has never been a politician, so it is difficult to judge, however, if his dealing with his orange neighbour is anything to go by he is going to be pretty tough.

Interesting programme on BBC radio 4, yesterday, Profile Mark Carney. Stephen Smith profiles Mark Carney’s life. It’s only 14 mins, might be interesting to anyone wanting to know more about him.

Carney's time at the Bank gave him plenty of experience dealing with Donald Trump - who has not only imposed steep tariffs on Canada since returning to office in January, but has also suggested that America should annex its less powerful neighbour.

From 2011-18, Carney was chair of the Financial Stability Board, which co-ordinated the work of regulatory authorities around the world, giving him a key role in the global response to the policies of the first Trump presidency.

He was a regular at the G20 meetings, with a pitch-side view of Trump on the global stage.
The above is from the BBC news site. Carney seems know what's involved in dealing with Trump so that will be a plus for him with voters, I suspect.

I understand that Mr Trump has been giving advice to Canadians about their vote(!). He recommends that they elect a party which will join the USA as their 51st state.

Gosh that’s good for a leader these days, isn’t it! Buyers remorse has set in in the USA much quicker than that, have you seen the 100 Days poll? Same is true of Starmer here. Why do you think Carney will do better?
