Trump as Pope
(86 Posts)I looked an article in the BBC news with almost complete disbelief.
There's a photo of Trump dressed as Cardinal and a suggestion that he'd like to be Pope .
I am a Catholic .
My family background is Welsh and they are Baptists .
I am C of E as my parents were and attend their church .
I am very much a free thinker and not nervous of challenging things in my church
My Vicar is a friend and also similar in her thoughts .
I find this photo deeply offensive and am appalled by it .
I hope that it's fake news .
Did he post this himself? I wonder how he has the time for all his nonsense?
It’s an AI generated image but posted on White House social media so it has official backing. I’m not a catholic but think it is appalling and disrespectful especially when the pope has only recently died.
Every time I think Trump just can’t sink any lower in my estimation, down he goes again!
I don’t think his Southern Baptist buddies would like it at all. But did he actually sponsor it or was it someone else ? I agree with Delila , I’d doubt it somehow.
He posted it himself on his social media channel. It was then reposted by the White House.

It just shows how increasingly degenerate he has become nanna that we at first doubt it, "surely not" we say - but then find out its all too true.

It's almost astonishing that he doesn't aspire to be God.
The man has a disturbing mentality and it's being nurtured and encouraged by an army of crawlers who seek to benefit from fawning over him.
Elon Musk for one.
It's almost astonishing that he doesn't aspire to be God.
A thought no doubt entertained by quite a few observers.
Don't some of his supporters - the more fanatical - believe that he has been chosen by God to lead America out of the darkness? Does he believe it himself?
We were assured by one Facebook Trump enthusiast that we 'liberals' / lefties just didn't get the joke - that he (Trump) was baiting us... trolling us, and we fell for it. Such enthusiasts of course do not have the intellectual ability to understand that there are fierce critics of DJT who are, in fact, neither liberals nor lefties.
I suppose that's one explanation though - he's done this for the 'LOLS',,,
As lemsip says, the image is AI generated - but he posted it on Truth Social.
I think all the sycophantic fawning over Trump has created an alternative reality for him - a 'Trump world', one in which he can be anyone he wants to be, hold any position he wants to hold, and do anything he wants to do.
It's both fascinating and horrifying, at the same time.
he really is quite bonkers

He posted that picture himself. He is the most disgusting person on this planet. You don’t have to be a Catholic or even religious to be offended by this.
I can only agree with you . Trump is soulless as well as shameless

The dictionary explains the word Catholic as "a Greek word meaning 'universal' as used in the CofE creed, so she can be "universal" in her beliefs and stay within the Church of England teachings.
'Roman' catholics are members of the Roman Universal Church if you like.
Some C of E churches actually characterise themselves as 'Anglo Catholic'. The C f E church I attended as a child was very 'high' and now it's website actually says that it is an 'Anglo Catholic' parish.
I am now agnostic, but as I actually volunteer at a former Roman Catholic seminary with a history of 16th & 17th C executions of its priests and am aware of the feelings of local Roman Catholics about its 'English martyrs' I find my former churches claim somewhat distasteful.
P.S. Trump is disgusting...
Mr Trump has suggested that he might be expecting the Nobel Peace Prize soon, so perhaps after that he is looking at becoming a Saint. A papal stint could help him to achieve this.
I was very much imbued, being brought up a Catholic, CofE protestants were nothing to do with us, the Irish nuns at our school, once the non catholics had filed out of earshot of course, in hushed tones they were prone to utter "you see girls, if you should go into a CofE church, God isn't there" they loved to keep those divisions going, only their stockings were holy, saw such a hole when we caught a glimpse of ankle

Someone ( not Trump) sent me this one. I laughed.
What is funny about it?

Nothing new or relevant in this.
Eggs, sucking, grannies.
Look out for orange smoke from the Vatican if Trump is elected?
Oh come on, Dave Allen (Catholic himself) regularly mocked the RC church.
I saw a similar joke photo - and found it in poor taste, but was not offended by it, and I am a practising Catholic.
After all, it is never going to happen. Trump is not a Catholic, which rules him out. Strictly speaking any Catholic male can be chosen - a pope does not have to be a cardinal, but traditionally popes were cardinals prior to their elevation to the Throne of St. Peter. They DO need to be pious, sound theologians and good at politics and diplomancy and have a reasonable knowledge of their own limitations. Concern for the poor, the homeless and the disadvantaged generally speaking, and concern for the environment are probably in the job description too.
Do any of these requirements bring Trump to the forefront of your minds?
No, I thought not.
Whoever thought up that joke, was surely not intending to insult Catholics, or the Catholic Church, but make the statement that he or she does not believe there are any bounds to Trump's self-conceit, or delusional belief in his abiltily to do any job on earth better than whoever is actually doing it right now.
There is also a joke going the rounds, that we have arrived at the Day of Judgement, and Trump is standing before the Almighty asking, "Why are you sitting in my seat?"
Blasphemous or funny? Take your choice.
True, Dave Allen mocked the Roman Catholic church.
I think this is a different situation.
Pope Francis has recently died. Mockery at a time of deep sadness and mourning is utterly disrespectful in my opinion.

I think there’s a difference between somebody inside an organisation telling the “joke” and somebody outside.
Some of the best Jewish jokes are told by Jewish comedians, likewise the best Irish jokes or Aberdonian jokes in Scotland.
It puts me in mind of a family - I may criticise or be flippant about somebody I am fond of but God help anybody outside my family trying to do likewise.
There’s also the question of taste - this is dubious at best. Pope Francis died just two weeks ago, mourned by millions.
Now he is trivialised by the most trivial of so-called world leaders., a man without decency or respect and who deserves little in return.
No there are some red lines and this crosses one by miles.
No, I respectfully disagree Maw. Jokes against religion (any time, any creed or belief) are fair game for free speech/cartoonists/comedians.
“Je suis Charlie” comes to mind.
I can however understand your take on it and that’s fine.
There is no Pope at present. Yes some people are mourning Francis.
However the papal vestments are hung up in a wardrobe right now and the idea sparked a joke. In poor taste? Perhaps. But as with Charlie Hebdo, perhaps not.
I originally thought that somebody had posted the picture to spite Trump and then found out he had posted it. I knew it was not April 1st but then my husband reminded me that every day with Trump is a joke.
I'm not a catholic but even I find it offensive
Why did Trump stop at Pope? It shows commendable humility, especially as He knows He is God.
Oh just stop it. What a load of nonsense. A much loved faith leader dies , mourned by millions, respected by those without faith and this is deemed acceptable?
Charlie Hebdo and a balloon have nothing to do with it. Nothing.
