Israel to "conquer" Gaza

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.

The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.

“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”

The plan would be implemented after US President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East next week to “provide a window of opportunity” for a hostage deal, the official added

"The plan then, is to displace Gaza’s entire population to the south of the enclave, following which the total the blockade of humanitarian aid may be lifted, the official said, adding that the military “will remain in every area it captures.”"

Glad somebody else sees that Galaxy😃

No nerve touched Oreo but tbh I don't think RS is beloved by Socialists of any type, he's very much a Capitalist IMO. He's not beloved by me but I have respect for him which is a very different matter. I don't have to agree with someone to respect their views.
Galaxy RS was very wrong about the US election but he was in good company!

Anniebach Fri 09-May-25 16:14:59

My opinion for what it’s worth is certainly not plans to sell coastal resorts, so Trump . Surely given their history of persecution Jews need roots, they are now fighting back not
moving on

Galaxy Fri 09-May-25 16:15:47

But he just can't understand it, I thought Kamala would win too, but I understood very well why people would vote for Trump. Anyway my despair at the likes of AC and RS are derailing the thread smile

2.3 million people, minus about 60,000 now dead, were tightly squeezed into the whole of tiny Gaza, how on Earth can they all be pushed into a corner of the south and survive.

My opinion for what it’s worth is that Israel wants the palistinians out permanently, so it can take their land for its own people. They are already marketing coastal areas in gaza as luxury properties for sale to wealthy American friends and others with cash. The land is not theirs to sell.

The population density is less than that of other small countries in the world, but yes, of course they should not be squeezed into an even smaller area.

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 17:33:35

Anniebach has asked a serious question. Anyone care to respond. 'Why were 2.3 million living in tiny Gaza?'

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 17:39:03

There are already legal definitions of what constitutes a 'genocide'. What is happening to the people of Gaza today, as we sit here typing out our thoughts and opinions, fulfils the criteria.
What is happening in Gaza is genocide.

"The vast majority of the Palestinians who live in Gaza are refugees or the descendants of refugees who moved to Gaza after being expelled or fleeing Zionist forces during the wars around the creation of Israel in 1948. Palestinians call that exodus the Nakba, or catastrophe."

"During the 1948 Palestine war and more specifically the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees fled or were expelled to the Gaza Strip. By the end of the war, 25% of Mandatory Palestine's Arab population was in Gaza, though the Strip constituted only 1% of the land."

Two explanations found by googling.

Putin has been 're-elected' so many times in Russia.
As has Xi Jinping in China.
The fact that Hamas has been elected in Gaza, does not mean that everyone in that tragic place appoves of them, any more than those election 'successes' mean approval in Russia and China.
We know how it works, and I for one would not have the courage to stand up as a candidate against any of those tyrants.

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 17:46:12

And still they have too much area for some people. Thanks foxie48.

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 17:50:14

Yes, for balance, it would be interesting to see a list of your suggested Israeli experts, Oreo.

foxie48 Fri 09-May-25 18:04:12

I think it's important to add that Gaza is practically a prison camp for Palestinian refugees or perhaps a ghetto would be a better word. They don't have freedom to leave, they cannot even leave by sea as Israel only allows them to be 15 nautical miles from shore. There is no airport and the two exits into Israel and the one into Egypt are heavily policed.

Uzy Raby, a history professor, has been one of the most sought-after Middle East experts in Israeli media.

The senior lecturer at the department of Middle Eastern and African history at Tel Aviv University has unapologetically advocated the starvation of civilians in northern Gaza who do not follow the Israeli army’s order to evacuate south.

"Anyone who stays there will be judged by law as a terrorist and will go through either a process of starvation or a process of extermination," he said during a TV interview last month.

Well this is one, perhaps Oreo is thinking of him?

silverlining48 Fri 09-May-25 18:13:42

Why is it so crowded? Partly because many people in Gaza are refugees from other towns which over the years have been ‘taken’ ( by force) by Israel. If these refugees were allowed back to their homes the Gaza Strip woukd not be so overcrowded but Israel will not allow their return to homes and lands which have been taken over by the Jewish population. The only places they can find are in one of the the refugee camps in Gaza.
Families are large babies are born, that increases the population but it is not possible to leave for elsewhere, there is no freedom to do so.
There is lots of info online, easy to find. Unfortunately I don’t know how to attach info but there is a lot online if anyone is interested.

silverlining48 Fri 09-May-25 18:19:34

A comma after large , before babies … above.

Look for them yourself if you’re interested enough, or do you doubt that Israel has any academics?

Why do they have such large families if poor and little room?

Oreo Fri 09-May-25 18:22:59

There were plenty of hospitals and clinics in Gaza for women to have access to family planning methods.

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 18:23:50

Well, Oreo, it was your suggestion that we read these scholars.

Oreo Fri 09-May-25 18:25:37

Although called refugee camps in Gaza they weren’t tented enclaves but normal areas, with banks, shops and all the other things that residents needed.

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 18:26:59

Now, that is some statement Oreo, about birth control. Perhaps it is against their religion or even their will. It is not for you to decide.
Also fyo, there are not too many hospitals or clinics in the area at the moment. Why is that, we wonder?

a process of extermination ? Did he use that word? I will Google Uzy Raby.

Yes, better to read Israeli academic views than that of Rory Stewart. But please, go ahead and read what he says about Israel if that’s what you prefer.Do not expect me to furnish you with a reading list.

silverlining48 Fri 09-May-25 18:27:46

As for crowded, the other crowded places Monaco, macau, Singapore Gibraltar can’t be compared. The difference is the people there can travel or move elsewhere, unlike the Gazans who cannot.

Maremia Fri 09-May-25 18:28:52

These 'havens' have have all other things that the 'residents' needed. What if they needed to be free to move to other areas? Are they lesser beings, in some way?
