this continues an ongoing thread on Gaza
www.gransnet.com/forums/news_and_politics/a1347791-Israel-to-conquer-Gaza?msgid=31157292#31157292
The O/P read (in part)
"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.
The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.
“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”
We now have the aid crisis at the focus of world wide attention.

I don't have any insider info, but I suspect Corbyn is only doing it to raise issues about current armaments, rather than historical dimensions. Don't think it will get beyond the 'reading'.

Labour, on taking office, suspended 30 licences for components for arms to Israel.
Lammy said the arms would be used to violate humanitarian laws.
The UK still sends components for the 35 planes to Israel and other countries for our own safety.
Thank you, AGAA4, I hadn't realised this.

Corbyn and the wreath laying
‘ I was present but I don’t think I was involved’
His stance on Israel/Gaza has been questionable for a long time and one of the reasons he isn't in the Party, but any MP has the right to ask questions about the UK's current involvement.
I just don't understand the call for an "inquiry", just vigorous attempts to keep trying to broker peace, make sure aid gets in, and political moves with other countries who all feel matters have gone far too far.
I am noticing how the call from Jews opposing Netanyahu is getting louder and louder.
Today I read that Sharon’s Lifschitz - a London based film maker and academic, whose 84 year old father was abducted and subsequently died on 7/10, said that she considers Netanyahu the worst prime minister ever. Saying that “he is ready to commit atrocities, that Israel will pay for for a long time”
Yottam Ottolenghi (whose books I have and recipes are always delicious😊) said “the use of food, or withholding it, as a tool in conflict is something I cannot stay quiet about …..no person, no child should go hungry as a result of war”
Arabella Duffield - treasurer of the Core Israel Foundation said “the Israeli government is endangering what’s left of it’s moral authority”
Netanyahu has threatened to put 80% tax on the foreign income of charitable trusts and civic organisations for human rights etc. Hannah Weisfield CEO of Yachad - whose aim is to bring the conflict to end by diplomacy and talks said that human rights organisations will be prevented from any work in israel.
Netanyahu is intent on shutting down every voice that opposes his government.
All this to save him from standing trial next year ?
Jonathan Wittenberg - senior Rabbi of Masorti U.K.
Writes of the catastrophe happening in Gaza. He welcomes the fact that some aid has entered Gaza, but says that if adequate aid does not enter Gaza, it will be deeply damaging to Israel’s international moral standing.
Wittenberg argues that the view of countless Israelis and Jews worldwide is that adequate aid must reach the Palestinians, or the foundational values of justice and compassion will be lost.
Countless Israeli and Jews ! when did Israelis stop being Jews ?
When they were secular, Muslim or Christian.
So not true ,
The more I read, the more I worry that Netanyahu is threatening the very existence of Israel.
It is being almost totally isolated, and if it wasn’t for the support of the USA it would be in a very sticky situation indeed.
73.6% of Israelis are Jews. The others are Christians and Muslims.

You forgot those who describe themselves as secular or atheists etc. The amount to quite a large percentage, and tend to be more liberal in their voting.
Do give the percentages and explain what you mean by
atheists and secular tend to be more liberal in their voting ‘
Sorry. Yes I did. Most countries are made up of various religions or none.

Worry no more, the existence of Israel isn’t in any jeopardy.
Governments will always support it no matter what words are said in public.
It’s more the Palestinians you should worry about as the two State solution is now further off than ever.
Whitewave when you speak of “countless Israelis and Jews”
you are claiming Israel is not a Jewish State, is not the only Jewish State, this is no difference to you many posts on The Holocaust, I will not feed this need
AGAA4
Sorry. Yes I did. Most countries are made up of various religions or none.
You don’t stop being Jewish if you aren’t religious.
What I do think is that just as an Israeli state was imposed relatively successfully on the area during the last century, and supported by most of the leading states at the time, so should a Palestinian state be imposed and supported. The real issue was the failure on the part of the British to support a two state solution. Although I appreciate that the geopolitical situation was very different to what it is today.
The problem is that I order for this to happen we need usa on board and I don’t see that happening.
The US will always support Israel.Even under the most unpredictable President ever.
Annie
It’s simple to google the difference between secularism and atheism. It took seconds to check, and now i know.
About Israel it will continue to exist, of course, but the decades of unquestioning non critical support it had enjoyed has gone.
Yes I think of secular Jews as those who no longer follow the Jewish religion but are culturally and ethnically part of the diaspora.

Trump is saying very little about the situation in Gaza which actually speaks volumes.
agaa4 with regard to the continued existence of Israel. Of course I think it is more likely than not that it will continue, but nothing is for ever, and I think if it continues down the road of violence to resolve its problems rather than diplomacy and peace than its wicket will become very sticky.
