I think the problem with many of the older generation is we get more and more out of touch with salaries here and overseas, the longer we are not in that world. It happens to us all as we get further away from working life. That's why some of us check the market for those filling these jobs before we post.

Throwing out a claim like grossly underpaid without backing it up with facts is rather meaningless.

Seems Wes Streeting today suggested striking doctors can have higher pay - if they agree to slash their gold-plated pensions.

I find your posts the most egregious and aggressive that are made in answer to mine. I'm sure that others won't, and of course they too may have their opinion. However, as far as I'm aware I am still allowed the choice as to who I provide information for and who I don't.

I really don’t think they will have the support of the public this time round. They agreed a settlement very recently and now they want more. We would all like more, but the country can’t afford this continual cycle of strikes and pay rises.

My immediate reaction was that it is a very mean thing to do, and that I disagree with their action because they had such a good deal when labour took office and 5+% seems reasonable given the inflation rate etc.

However, the more I think about it the more muddy the waters get.

So once again I’m - at the moment - on the fence with this one.

One thing I think perhaps could be looked at is the enormous student debt that they incur.

My cousins daughter recently qualified - well during covid, and is now working in Australia. All that training - lost - to Australia's benefit. That doesn’t seem right. But talking to her, I can absolutely understand her reasons, although I’m not sure that I would have made the same decision.

Perhaps they could train at a very reduced debt if they work for a given amount of time in the nhs that provided their training?
It could be voluntary, but they have to sign up.

At 84 I've no doubt he is living very comfortably on Pensions and speaking fees. He is certainly very much to the right in politics. As twice as many over 65s voted Conservative in the last election by compared to the under 65s that doesn't come as a suprise. I'm also sure that demographic is true on Gransnet.

Allira, your Consultant had presumably worked in the nhs many years before going to Australia for a couple of years. My concern is our nhs losing many young doctors to Australia, Germany and more. A £50,000 welcome to pay off half your student debt, then a bigger salary and much better working conditions.
