Afghan mess up

A real blunders- not by a civil servant - but, according to the DT, a Royal Marine responsible for vetting Afghan applicants. And one it took the MOD 18 months to realise and only then by an email from a concerned individual. The disclosure seems to have been widely shared on social media and the Taliban claim to have seen it too. Lives were put at risk and it was right to invite such Afghans to the UK but the case for secrecy and superinjunction was surely weak given the Takiban had the data.

One of my daughters is a tester in IT. She’s one of those who tests the system that the developers have designed and built.
When you hear what goes on ( or doesn’t 😱) it’s a miracle that there aren’t more cockups like this ( there probably are)
The last big project she was working on for the home office she would tell the people in the HO to do something on line so she could see where the fault was and correct it.
More times than she could deal with in the end she was told oh, that person isn’t in today. That person is off sick. That person is on holiday
All the while the HO was telling her company that time was critical on this project 🤬

The statistics show several other nationalities well ahead of Afghans: Jenrick doesn't give the story.

Dorisdodar Thu 17-Jul-25 07:36:50

No Afghans top the list and it's not just for sex crimes either...

lafergar Thu 17-Jul-25 07:47:04

I think we are in very very dangerous territory if we are saying a whole race of people has certain traits.

Have we learnt nothing? Apparently not.

Afganistan the couutry where fathers sell off daughters to old men in order to buy food.
Their laws allow for children to be sold as young as 8 or 9 to go to really old men where they will be raped.

Cslling out racism is being naive. poor children.

I think it’s naive not to recognise that some countries have totally different accepted cultural practices to us here in the U.K.

There was footage last week of an old man marrying a 6 year old girl! It was horrific. There were other secretly filmed “marriages” involving very young girls. There was a 15 year old girl who had just had her third baby. 😥

I think the list is in alphabetical order

Maremia Thu 17-Jul-25 08:36:49

Robert Jenrick, wasn't he involved in some sort of money scandal with Richard Desmond, who had once owned a pornography magazine called Asian Babes?

Maremia Thu 17-Jul-25 08:40:47

I'd just like to mention that it would have been much, much more than 400+ British soldiers not coming home, if these Afghan recruits had not helped to save all the British Army lives that they did.
We owe them thanks for that, and we owe them the keeping of the promises made.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 17-Jul-25 09:57:53

This appears to be a major scandal that has been hushed up to protect, not the afghans but the British government.

Dorisdodar Thu 17-Jul-25 10:35:26

J52 no it's not....Maremia other sources are available...Lafergar I think we are in dangerous territory if we don't highlight the fact a race of people are 20 times more likely to commit sexual offences than British citizens.

Maremia Thu 17-Jul-25 11:06:31

'More likely to' is no way the same as 'has already committed'.
In September we will be giving a welcome, with knobs on, to a man already convicted of sexual offences.

There are no words.

Maremia Thu 17-Jul-25 11:11:29

pinkquartz, yes horrific. The tragedy is that we can do nothing to help all of those girls.
But we can help some.
We can help the daughters of those Afghan Recruits, who were promised safety, in return for helping our troops, in extremely difficult situations.

Maremia Thu 17-Jul-25 11:34:32

When those men are hunted down by the Taliban, their families will fall into destitution, and it is destitution which makes those other fathers, mentioned upthread, sell their daughters, as you have already indicated...for food.

Agree. But we still invite them in.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 17-Jul-25 14:43:08

Surely we have a duty of care to those who risked their lives day in and day out to help our military?

Just like Gaza, Afghanistan was another example of what was neither reasonable nor proportionate after 9/11.

It completely failed in its mission, and gave false hope to so many women and Afghans.

That is utter rubbish!

Afghans don't top the list in numbers. Not only that, but there is no indication what percentage of residents those figures represent.

Where on earth do you get the idea that Afghans are 20 times more likely to commit sexual offences than British citizens? It's true that just over 21% of the people charged for sexual offences were non-British, but the figures are meaningless without knowing how many people of each ethnic background are resident in West Yorkshire.

Even a rough guess shows that it's nowhere near 20 times.

LizzieDrip Thu 17-Jul-25 16:34:40

I agree growstuff.

Some disturbing tropes are being rolled out on this thread.

AGAA4 Thu 17-Jul-25 17:00:15

There were also released details of over 100 British special forces and spies with the Afghans details. The Taliban have those too.

westendgirl Thu 17-Jul-25 17:29:37

If just over 21%of the people charged for sexual offences then the remaining 79% were ?
I don't know where some posters are getting their information, but we have a responsibility to these families.who risked their lives to help our forces.I am sure that there is a large difference between the ordinary Afghans and the Taliban, who are trying to crush the country by their cruel, oppressive and outdated ways.It is heartbreaking to see how women and girls are being denied a free way of life with education, work, hairdressing, music being denied them. This is the Taliban's doing.

westendgirl Thu 17-Jul-25 17:40:31

Sorry first sentence should read;
If just over 21%of those charged for sexual offences were non-British then the remaining 79% were?
