It is very difficult to understand what is really happening and what are lies being perpetrated by Israel or Hamas. Add to this reporting restrictions and it is surprising we know as much as we do.

So, if there is no anti semitism on these threads, then what is the problem with doing what many Jews around the world are doing and having a care for the people of Gaza against relentless hostilities?

No one can speak for many Jews around the world, how many countries would one be claiming to speak for ?

Oreo Mon 28-Jul-25 10:55:04

There’s no problem with feeling sorry for the people in Gaza, it’s the whirlwind hamas have brought down on their heads.
There’s every problem with only criticism of Israel.

Smileless2012 Mon 28-Jul-25 10:55:58

No one that I have seen is or has denied there is antisemitism in the real world on any of these threads Oreo.

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 10:58:00

Thank you Oreo, and so we shall.
But, there may be ways that keyboard warriors, no, no mocking, thank you, that people like us who can type and have opinions could actually be guided towards helping address the anti-semitic situation in the wider world, just as some of us are about to write in support of the people of Gaza, have on other threads tried to support a Russian prisoner, and for the fit ones actually go on marches.
Over to you.

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 11:00:19

It seems to be a 'block' for want of a better word, that because of threats that are felt outside cannot see the desperate need of another group of people.

Oreo Mon 28-Jul-25 11:01:33

There’s nothing left to say, thanks.
I have said all that matters.

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 11:01:50

As many as I see on the BBC, and so would you should you care to watch it.

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 11:03:40

If I said Oreo that I though Haman were f..... e... b.......
I would be banned.

True, Johnathan Blake is asking this question -
‘many requests for protecting Gaza, not one from U.N and charities asking for release of Israeli hostages ‘

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 11:17:34

Who would be the most effective 'negotiator' for this AnnieB?
Provide us with a suggestion, as you are thinking about this a lot. You must have some ideas.
I have to admit that I no longer believe that the hostages are top of Netanyahu's agenda. He seems to be more intersted in appeasing the Settlers. Ref, the recent vote in their parliament, in case you were wondering how I got that idea. Saves you asking.

Smileless2012 Mon 28-Jul-25 11:21:31

Johnathan Blake is wrong. 5 days ago the UN Assistant Secretary-General called for an immediate cease fire, the release of all hostages and an increase in humanitarian aid.

Anniebach Mon 28-Jul-25 11:43:58

One official statement, no releases of concerns for hostages as for Palestinians

Sadly, good points.

Thank you greatly - I hadn't caught up with that

I don't even know what 'antisemitism' is defined as and who defines it. I had a post deleted by a mod some weeks ago for "antisemitism", I have never hated Jews and indeed one of my best friends was a very liberal Jew .. I was mystified as to what I had actually said that the mod was so very cautious about.

Antsemitism means to me as portrayed by Sir Walter Scott by the beautiful " jewess " Rebecca. I must look up Chat to have a look at what 'antsemitism 'means in 025.

Caleo Mon 28-Jul-25 12:37:31

from Chat just now:

The core idea behind including some hostility or prejudice against Israel within definitions of antisemitism is this:

When criticism of Israel crosses into demonization, double standards, or delegitimization, it may reflect or mask antisemitic intent or attitudes.

This is not the same as saying that all criticism of Israel is antisemitic — which would clearly be false.

Re-written draft template letter, incorporating suggestions and points well made:

For use as a template to write about Gaza

Written by my Quaker Friend from the Welsh Valleys, and myself and GN contacts.

The Friend who started this for me has a passion, in extreme old age, driven to work all out for the peoples of Gaza.

"

Dear xx

I write to you with anger, sorrow, and hope that you will take the all the measures possible to end the suffering of the Gazan, and all the Palestinian Peoples.

Firstly, the overall fundamental action - that is to join other nations in recognising a Palestinian State. Our government must move to do this.

Secondly, all the actions necessary to stop any supplies of arms.

Third, crucially, feed the starving, the malnourished, those drinking poisoned water and Provide adequate Medical Care.

Fourth, start to Rebuild.

Many loyal Labour Party members, and UK citizens from many other political, religious and cultural backgrounds

Have become exasperated with a government some of whom who will not yet act adequately.

On these issues we urge you to stay true to the principles and humanity…of all that is right and good, for the long term survival of innocents in Gaza and the West Bank.

It is time, despite the many people in Israel itself, and the people of many religious and cultural backgrounds to shout that

Netanyahu’s government - the current cabinet.... is now close to becoming a pariah State.

So:

^Recognise Palestine as a state^

^Cease Fire Now^

^Make every effort to protect those in our Jewish communities suffering from anti-semitism by actions of Netanyahu and his cabinet whilst supporting those brave enough to speak out against that very regime: Nor should we tolerate Islamophobia: Muslims do speak out against terrorism: few support those extremes^

*^Feed the starving, the innocents dying of malnutrition, poisoned water^*

^Use the UN and any other benign organisations to supply food, water, medical supplies, and other necessities^

^Air drops are only substitutes where there is no other choice: as opposed to situations where people are shot dead or wounded trying to access supplies^

^The UN Assistant Secretary-General has made it clear very recently that the UN is calling for an immediate cease fire, the release of all hostages and an increase in humanitarian aid.^

Therefore, In the hope you will be moved by all that is good to support these actions, I urge you and your contacts to facilitate these measures

Yours in Hope

leading UK antisemitism watchdog has called for actress Miriam Margolyes to be stripped of her OBE and BAFTA awards after she accused Israel of behaving like Nazi Germany in an interview about Gaza.

The Harry Potter star, 83, told The Big Issue that Israel’s military campaign reminded her of the Holocaust – declaring: “The terrible thing I face is that Hitler won. He changed us, made us like him.”

silverlining48 Mon 28-Jul-25 13:07:55

I think that claim has been made by many, by both Jews and non Jews.
Am interested in learning about the leading UK antisemitism watchdog you mention, demanding that her awards be revoked.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) condemned the remarks as “repugnant” and said it would write to the Honours Forfeiture Committee and BAFTA, urging them to revoke her titles.

Thanks Annie.

Criticism of Israel’s response to Gaza and “Hitler has won” remark

In April 2024, Margolyes posted a video via the Jewish Council of Australia strongly criticizing Israel’s actions during its Gaza conflict. She said she was "never so ashamed of Israel" and claimed, "To me, it seems as if Hitler has won," arguing that Israel had become "a vicious, genocidal nationalist nation" and called on Jews globally to “shout, beg, scream for a ceasefire” .

Although she explicitly stated her condemnation of Hamas, many people found her language deeply controversial. She argued her critique was moral and rooted in Jewish tradition, not antisemitism .

The CAA did not publicly address this video specifically, but Margolyes’s pattern of sharp anti‑Israel criticism has been criticized by broader antisemitism‑watch organizations as dangerously inflammatory .

CAA (Campaign Against Antisemitism) was this the watchdog?

I really don't give too much thought to who is anti-Semitic or anti-Islam,

I do care that children are starving and the adults are squabbling about politics, geography and religion.

Please, just feed the children...or we'll all go to hell.
