If we are to believe, as some insist, that everything terrible going on in Gaza is down to Hamas, it will be the most bizarre conflict in history, especially silly seeing as Hamas are a group of terrorists standing against one of the strongest and well equipped armies in the region belonging to a first world country with endless funding from a super power - the US.
Hamas are capable of atrocities we know this, but capable of causing all the present misery we see in Gaza??
People really are reaching.

So what do GNs think of Starmer’s decision to recognise Palestine as a state?
(1001 Posts)Exactly that.
Although it’s still only, the UK may recognise Palestine as a state unless certain conditions are fulfilled
What will that mean for the UK and for those supporters of either group living here?
A footnote in history? I sometimes wonder which planet posters are on.
Journalists reporting from any war zone aren’t and cannot be
‘Protected’ it just isn’t possible and many journalists worldwide are injured or killed. It goes with the job.Which is why banning the media there is a good thing.Palestinian journalists and anyone working for Arab news outlets take a risk. Most media pics are those agreed by hamas.
I don’t think anyone doesn’t realise that Israel is ‘causing misery’ of course, it’s war there and they are going hard after hamas ( who aren’t the peasants armed with bows and arrows that many posters on here seem to think.)
But there is no doubt at all that hamas are the instigators of this war.Israel will do what it has to, and anything it can to reduce them.
In every war there have been embeds, war correspondents who know the risks but want to report to the world what is happening on the ground. This could in itself be biased but the footage would often speak for itself.

By all means trash the Geneva convention, I mean what do the signatories know?
Bugger all according to you!
And all the journalists around the world including the BBC and CNN calling to report from Gaza?
And not forgetting Netanyahu who stood up yesterday and said he would protect any foreign journalists and promptly killed 5!
It just isn’t possible to protect embedded journalists and how do you suggest it’s done? Journalists have been killed in missile strikes or stray bullets in many situations around the world.
It’s one thing to protect journalists in theory and quite different in practice.
WWM, those happy to turn a blind eye to Israel breaking international and humanitarian law, not just in this conflict but others over the years, would be the first to be outraged if other rogue states were accused of the same. As it is Israel claims the accolade for being among the highest scorers when it comes to breaking said laws.
The difference being that other rogue states suffer crippling sanctions.
Israel never has and never will be forced to answer any charges made.
Nice.

As I said embeds are aware of the risks, and sone do get injured or killed, but has always been seen as essential in the theatre of war, from the very first embeds who would go with pencil and paper during WW1 or the civil war in the US.

Read your history.
How do think the Vietnam war was reported, the Korean War, the Iraq war, the two world wars?
Are Israeli journalists allowed any access to report on the welfare of their soldiers?

Are Israeli journalists allowed any access to report on the welfare of their soldiers?
Yes I think so, I keep reading how they are suffering PTSD etc. A large minority are now refusing to serve apparently.
It’s a shame that Hamas soldiers are not refusing to fight.

The power in that conflict zone is Israel, it isn’t Gaza.
And can you see independent journalists like the BBC Jeremy Bowen allowing Netanyahu to call the shots.
Of course not!
The Palestinian part of Gaza is under Hamas control, reports are with Hamas agreement, the number of journalists killed is from Hamas sources, they could claim any number they chose.
No doubt as can Israel.

None of those wars had an allied news/propaganda organization reporting from the opposition side claiming deaths.
They were in any case overseas wars that did not threaten the homeland, in the way Israel is threatened. In the case of WW2 there weren’t many mourning the loss of millions of German civilians at the time
The thing about history is that there is progression.
However, this is a an argument that is out if date' as Netanyahu has indicated that he will allow foreign journalists into Gaza.
What do you mean by progression in history wwm2 ? A bit of a broad statement?
No David your are right, not many mourned the loss of German civilians in WW2. But Germany was a sovereign state and had a massive army which had already occupied several countries as a result of this. Therefore western ally responses were not disproportionate.
The Israeli response in the conflict in Gaza is totally disproportionate. In effect a massive army from a powerful state attacking a stateless people.
So why is it taking so long for Israel to overcome Hamas? Babs03

Well, do you really want my answer?
You see the main commanders of Hamas are long gone, there are still some but the threat posed is not the same.
So why are the IDF destroying Gaza and committing genocide??
You tell me.

Because they are an oppressor - killing maiming and starving and imprisoning the oppressed.
T here will always be recruits for those who are opposed such violence. The children are watching at what is happening to their parents, friends and relatives and hate will be breed into them.

Because so very unfortunately Israel has no option but to destroy a force whose prime purpose is to obliterate Israel. Babs03
Israel cannot take on the wider forces of the Middle East though. Killing Al Jazeera journalists will anger more than Hamas.

That’s really naive, the IDF are attacked by the Palestinians every time they get an opportunity some leaders have been killed, others have taken their place. If those in Palestine surrendered, laid down their arms and stopped attacking the IDF the killing would end.
We seem to be as far away as ever from that, this is why there is growing dissent amongst the IDF, trying to take control of all of Gaza will cause many IDF deaths.
