So what do GNs think of Starmer’s decision to recognise Palestine as a state?

Exactly that.
Although it’s still only, the UK may recognise Palestine as a state unless certain conditions are fulfilled
What will that mean for the UK and for those supporters of either group living here?

I don’t remember anything grotesque about Trump’s vision for Gaza

The horrific part was forcibly expelling 2.1 million Palestinians from their land and taking it over - not to be repopulated by Palestinians. Just like his proposed takeover of Greenland, Canada and who knows wherever next. Maybe you would like to be forcibly expelled from your home - most of us would not. The man is grotesque just like his ideas.

ronib Sun 03-Aug-25 18:28:54

Yes StoneofDestiny did you not read my last sentence?
Although to return to Golda Meir’s comment - what is more important life or death?

StoneofDestiny Sun 03-Aug-25 18:31:06

From Reuters

*Trump's vision of a Gaza Strip cleared of its Palestinian inhabitants and redeveloped into an international resort revived an idea previously floated by his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
*It triggered condemnation from around the world, with critics saying it would be tantamount to ethnic cleansing and illegal under international law. Gazans were also quick to denounce the scheme, vowing never to leave the ruins of their homes.
For Palestinians, such talk recalls the "Nakba" or catastrophe after the 1948 war around the creation of the state of Israel, when 700,000 fled or were forced from their homes*

StoneofDestiny Sun 03-Aug-25 18:36:25

what is more important life or death?

That is decided on your own value system. People have chosen or prepared for death to save others from enslavement and living under terror. Those fighting (and prepared to die) in WW2 to rid the world of a right wing Fascist leader persecuting Jews would feel betrayed to find a right wing Fascist leader ruling Israel and a US President supporting his atrocities.

Hitler killed 6 million Jewish people. Hardly surprising that Israel is a tad touchy …. StoneofDestiny

Palestine ruled by terrorists and Israel ruled by war criminals.

An explosive mix.

The Middle East has always been a powder keg.

The Middle East has not always been a powder keg. The Ottoman Empire lasted from the 15th Century until the Turks fought with the Germans and were defeated in World War 1. The Ottoman Empire was then dissected by France and Britain. The borders are typically western with straight lines arbitrarily imposed. Thus, the Kurdish people do not have a homeland, split over Turkey, Iran and Iraq. In 1917 The Balfour declaration was written and signed by the British government!
The different Persian Empires were very learned before the Greeks. They invented Algebra and proved the earth went round the sun. There was a huge library in Baghdad which served the university there.

I’m relieved that Starmer has agreed to recognise Palestine in September if Israel doesn’t comply with the conditions. In my opinion Gaza is being subjected to genocide. West Bank Palestinians are constantly being attacked by Israelis. I excuse neither Hamas not the IDF but I fail to understand the appalling treatment of the Palestinian people. (Just as I still find it difficult to comprehend the murder of 6 million Jews in Europe before and during WW2).

pce612 Sun 03-Aug-25 19:16:12

A slight diversion here; Starmer says he will bring Palestinians to Britain’s hospitals.
Why?
The NHS can’t cope with our nationals needing hospital care.

Babamaman Sun 03-Aug-25 19:23:29

Totally disgusting! You cannot recognise a state when there are no government, borders or people.
The people living in Gaza are Arabs that no other Arab country want.
Egypt doesn’t want them
Qatar will only give terrorist leaders money as they have paid Starmer, own most of London.
We should be very very afraid.
Don’t think these terrorists will stop killing the Jews - they will come after Christian’s, LGBTQ people, Hindus, Sikhs next anyone who doesn’t kowtow to their way of thinking.
They do not want peace they have no intention of wanting peace.
Hamas terrorists want the destruction of Israel!
Is that what Starmer wants?
Is that what you gransnetters want?
A destruction of a people who have lived in the land for more than 3000yeats!
Before the birth of Jesus!
I’m heartbroken no one can see what is happening

Babamaman Sun 03-Aug-25 19:28:30

The Palestinian authority is another name for Hamas terrorists! They have absolutely no intention to stop once given a territory! They will only stop when they’ve murdered all Jews and destroyed Israel.
Then they will come for you

Babamaman Sun 03-Aug-25 19:31:43

Don’t be under any illusion all they want is the total annihilation of Israel. And I suppose you do too.
After the Jews it will be Christians
LGBQT and anyone else who doesn’t conform to their way of thinking!
Beware, be afraid you will be next

StoneofDestiny Sun 03-Aug-25 19:33:23

A horrendous episode in history that did not result in us deciding to annihilate all Germans, move them from their homes or starve them to death.

We need to understand the roots of terrorism. You say we must understand 'Israel being a tad touchy', them we must understand the root cause of Hamas terror even existing.

You cannot recognise a state when there are no government, borders or people

There are people - Palestinians (however many survive this genocide). They will choose their government - just as Israel has (and what a bloody choice they have made). Modern Israel declared itself a State without declaring its borders. Their current borders were formed by war and diplomatic negotiations - but it they are expanding their borders to take more land off Palestinians and killing the people who live there.

Susieq62 Sun 03-Aug-25 19:48:36

Do not confuse Gaza, West Bank and Palestine. Palestinians deserve a state especially after our disastrous decisions in 1948.
Israel is committing huge atrocities much larger than those committed by Hamas. They played into the hands of Netanyahu giving him carte blanch to create the situation we are observing.
New terrorists are being created by the current situation as people have long memories. Palestine needs to be created .

Can’t quite understand the argument StoneofDestiny - Germans definitely died in WW2. We fought a major war and millions died. It was only when the war had been decided that the killing stopped.

ronib Sun 03-Aug-25 19:51:49

AI suggests 70 to 85 million died in WW2.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 03-Aug-25 19:54:23

After visiting Gaza, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff confirmed yesterday that “There is hardship and shortage, but no starvation”.

The shameful truth is that Starmer, Macron and Carney do have sufficient insight into the same reality as Witkoff, but lack the moral courage to stand up against the hurricane of lies about starvation, unlawful killing and the other trumped up charges against Israel.

On the highside of estimates no one will know the exact number.

I'm fully aware of that obviously.

I prefer to believe our own medics, Medicin san Frontier, The Red Cross and UN backed security experts UN World Food Programme. Wonder why BBC journalists aren't allowed in?
The hands of US representatives and their President are so soiled with their association with Netanyahu that I doubt anybody will trust anything they say.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 03-Aug-25 20:50:01

Of course. HAMAS pulls them.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s beyond me how people are taken in when previously respected organisations are being poo pooed by Steve Witkoff. He is currently the chairman of a real estate development company! (Maybe wanting to develop Gaza for profit!)
