So what do GNs think of Starmer’s decision to recognise Palestine as a state?

Exactly that.
Although it’s still only, the UK may recognise Palestine as a state unless certain conditions are fulfilled
What will that mean for the UK and for those supporters of either group living here?

The palistinians recognised the right of Israel in 1992.

Israel has never accepted the right of Palestine and have spent decades taking more and more land from the Palestinians. We all know this.

If Gazans accept and return hostages they need the promise by Israel not to start the bombing afterwards. This promise has not been given by Israel. In fact they say they will continue the killing.

So the hostages are not released. It’s all they have to bargain with, tragic though that is for the hostages and their families.
They could have been released as long ago as March but Israel broke their agreement and carried on bombing.

So who is stopping the return of hostages. ? It’s not Palestine.

Not quite. The Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) - not 'the Palestjnians' - recognised Israel in 1993 (not 1992) but Israel has never been recognised as having the right to exist by Hamas (which is not the PLO).

The whole history of Palestine and its diminishing country is appalling, due originally to meddling from the UN, Zionists etc. I do not condone violence in any shape or form, but if you lived in a country which was divided unfairly and continued to be pillaged, you would be entitled to feel aggrieved. There should be clear recognition of the country Palestine for Palestinian people and Isreal for Isreali’s. There will never be peace until there is equality in the land mass. I pray that this could be possible.
Unfortunately we are now seeing starving Palestinians not too dissimilar to the horrendous historical old pictures of people in Belsen. Has history not taught us anything.

I, on the other hand, am glad that Keir Stammer and Britain, together with France and Canada, have joined the other 147 countries (75% of United Nation member states) in recognition of a new Palestine state. Since then, more countries have declared their support for the two-state solution.

Hopefully, this international pressure will put an end to Israel committing genocide through starvation against Palestinians.

I cannot wrap my head around the fact that the Israel government is doing to the Palestinians what the Nazis did to the Jews during holocaust. Perhaps this is a case of violence begets violence.

How many of the 147 member states are dictatorships, one party states and theocracies?

Have to say I don't know the precise answer to that. How many is it?

It's not easy to give an exact figure for dictatorships, one party states and theocracies in the UN but the World Population Review (see worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/dictatorship-countries) shows about 65 states as having low levels of democracy meaning 'not free'. Iran is the only theocracy having a supreme leader but others like Afghanistan come close and one should include the Vatican, I think. There is an interesting map at the website above.

The palistinians never had a state, they were and still are under very tight control of Israel. They have no freedom of movement, trapped inside tiny Gaza and can’t leave without the say so of Israel. They call it, not without reason, the biggest outdoor prison in the world. Hence the tunnels which can be used to protect from Israeli bombing as there are no safe rooms in Gaza, also to bring in car parts, furniture, food and building materials and whatever else they need, presumably weapons too.

One day of terrible violence in October 23 vs around 700 days ( and counting) of terrible violence in retribution. 1,000 Israelis dead and 60,000 Palestinians dead and many more thousands seriously wounded. More amputations on children than doctors ever experienced. Other children appearing to be targeted mainly in the head and chests are now causing questions to be asked. It’s a tragedy of giant proportions for all who are involved and for the rest of the world who watch on in horror.

The West Bank hardly gets a mention but killing is going on there daily while the IDF and Israeli police watch and do nothing to stop these illegal and violent criminal attacks and land grabs which have all been going on for decades.

The world appears to have woken up.

Hamas were always a terrorist group with their own propaganda and have never been interested in looking after the own people that is why they built tunnels under hospitals, have kept control of any aid and did not care of the consequences of taking hostages from Israel . They should not be rewarded for this .

Anniebach Sun 03-Aug-25 16:22:00

Palestine and terrorist groups, Black September 1972 broken into Munich Olympic Village and murdered 11 Jewish Olympians

Smileless2012 Sun 03-Aug-25 16:26:25

Palestine ruled by terrorists and Israel ruled by war criminals.

Palestine ruled by terrorists and Israel ruled by war criminals.

An explosive mix.

The Middle East has always been a powder keg.

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:00:37

Appalling.. Hamas have not released all the hostages and recognising 'Palestine' is basically recognising 'Hamastine'..a terrorist organisation as a state.Hamas avowed aim is to wipe out Israel and Jewish people. Have no lessons been learned since the Holocaust?! Pro Hamas/Palestine protestors should be banned proscribed imprisoned for their support for Hamas.Hamas steal the aid and shoot anyone they think might be anti Hamas

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:02:11

So what about October 7th 2023..you think the Atrocities by Hamas should be rewarded,?

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:03:04

Agree..prosribe and ban Hamas.

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:04:09

So misguided you are

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:05:16

Atrocities of October 7th 2023?

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:07:18

The Atrocities of October 7th 2023 and continuing non release of the hostages and Hamas aim to wipe out Israel and Jewish people..absolutely no recognition

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:08:17

You are well taken in by Hamas fakes

Nan0 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:10:20

Yes and I am shocked that there are transmitters who support Hamas!! I find this shocking and depressing

On 21 Nov 2024 the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu PM of Israel and Yoav Gallant, former Minister for Defence of Israel alleging responsibility for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts during their fight with Gaza. A Hamas military commander had a warrant issue against him too but he has since died.

Israel is ruled by a perpetrator of crimes against humanity. Since October 2023 the death toll in Gaza has risen to over 60,000. The starvation of innocent civilians is being reported daily by independent medical sources.

What shames us all is that this is still going on. The Palestinian people have every right to have their state recognised, every right to object to the Israeli so called 'settlers' stealing their land and their livelihood and every right to live free from the oppression of the Israeli State. Terrorism comes in many forms and the Israeli Government and Hamas can both be described as terrorists. We are watching genocide - nothing less.

Ladyalice43 Sun 03-Aug-25 17:47:14

Not a good idea.

I find it so incredibly shocking that Israel can commit such genocide after the events of the Holocaust. Do they not see the similarities?

An abused child often becomes an abusive adult, having learned by example.
As a child in the 50’s I remember my father saying that WW3 would start in the Middle East. He was just an ordinary sailor in WW11 . If he could see that why can’t our so called leaders?

StoneofDestiny Sun 03-Aug-25 18:01:24

This terrorist has been interviewed on our TV screens many times yet we are told 'we don't talk to terrorists'.

We recognised the stupidity of 'not talking to terrorists' when we finally did talk to all side in the conflict in Northern Ireland Ireland. Peace agreements followed.

Giving Palestinians their Palestinian State is not giving in to Hamas, it's supporting the Palestinian people, giving them their land and allowing them to rebuild from the rubble and total destruction of their infrastructure. I sincerely hope the rest of the International Community helps them do that starting with the hospitals and schools. We all seem to have forgotten the grotesque site of Trump, Netanyahu's supporter, planning to build a luxury holiday resort of the graves of the Palestinians. Utterly repugnant.

ronib Sun 03-Aug-25 18:12:22

I don’t remember anything grotesque about Trump’s vision for Gaza. It looked amazing. The truly horrific part was that the locals were to be rehoused elsewhere.

If he could see that why can’t our so called leaders?

They can see. That is why there is culpability. People are increasingly afraid to speak out in case their are called 'anti semitic'. Even Jews who speak out are being denounced as anti semitic. Most recently Miriam Margolyes. We must speak out -

Talmud (Shabbat 54b): ‘Whoever can protest against members of their household and does not, is accountable [for the sins] of their household; if they can protest against their townspeople, they are accountable for their sins; if they could protest to the whole world, they are accountable for the whole world.’

Gfplux Sun 03-Aug-25 18:23:53

Britain needs to recognise that Israel and Hamas have committed war crimes.
Hamas fighters and IDF soldiers can not defend their actions by saying they were just following orders,
While Hamas have said they want to destroy Israel they have never had the weapons to do so.
However Israel with all the necessary weapons plus American support have been able to engage in Genocide in Gaza. Their latest weapon that seems to have been planned and executed over many months is to starve to death every Palestinian living in Gaza.
