“The UK technology secretary, Peter Kyle, has become embroiled in a row with Nigel Farage after saying the Reform leader was on the side of child abusers such as Jimmy Savile when it came to online safety.

Farage called for an apology from Kyle, saying the comparison was “disgusting”. He claimed it was not unreasonable to call for the repeal of the Online Safety Act that came into force last week.

Kyle doubled down, saying the act forced providers to “detect and remove horrific child sexual abuse material, using hash matching [technology], [which] prevents grooming and stops strange adults messaging kids, keeps children’s profiles and locations hidden, and stops kids seeing porn”.

Reform UK said on Monday it would repeal the act, arguing that measures intended to push social media companies to limit false and potentially harmful content would make the UK “a borderline dystopian state”.
I think people have misinterpreted what Peter Kyle said. He didn’t say Farage would be friends with Saville just that voting against the bill would make Reform on the side of people like Saville.

Well he is an idiot then. Many of us have concerns about the online safety act, I have spent 30 years working in roles involving child safeguarding.
I suppose it makes a change from nazi or far right.

I think you would need to be pretty far to the right to see "the amount of of left wing support" on GN as anything other than normal in any area where politics are discussed Saltyspec.

It's the belief that it is your bias that sets the "norm" for the country that leads to such a skewed view. You say that support for this government is "at an all time low". What actually matters is not the headlines in the far-right propaganda newspapers - you know the ones that always contain question marks/quotation marks in the headlines so they can be debunked below in the article that very few people read. A populist movement (right or left), backed by extremes of wealth will always be better heard than a government a year into the job. The next election will be the measure of this government and, if a week is a long time in politics, the world will have turned a good many times by then.

Perhaps one useful thing to remember is that not everyone who is anti-fascist is left-wing. There is a large space between those two positions and many people sit within that space, not at either end.

Can I point out that I didn't compare anyone to Hitler. I asked those, who basically paint asylum seekers as subhuman, if they now, after decades of learning about the history of that terrible period in Europe, believe that all or anything that was said about the Jews to make them the enemy of the state was true? Did they actually deserve what was basically retribution for the very difficult problems Germany faced. Did focusing on them solve those problems as easily and simply as promised - or at all? Did the people of Germany feel vindicated at the end of it all?

Of course everyone you speak to thinks as you do. We all tend to associate with people like ourselves, Teasle2. It up to us, not others, to work out why we chose to believe what we believe and whether it's the right thing to do.

I fail to understand the link you are making here. However, of course I feel deeply for the suffering of the Jews, they deserve a land to call their own after their suffering. Just for the record my in laws were German, they didnt have any say whatsoever in what happened politically during the war years, so to ask if they felt vindicated is not applicable to the vast majority of the population, just to those involved in the treatment of the Jews.

The vast majority of the UK are similarly not allowed to have any say in the invasion of the UK except at the ballot box when hopefully Labour will be kicked out.

I would say all three statements are correct.

There is a small but staunch group of Labour supporters (there used to be many more) who cannot believe the mess their long awaited government is making and do their best to defend them.
There are people who are definitely wary of sticking their head above the parapet, (online censoring?) .
There are those who are simply not interested in politics.

I have friends in real life in all three groups you identify and we manage to maintain our friendship.
