BBC report

“Israel has faced mounting criticism over the 22-month-long war with Hamas, with UN-backed experts warning of widespread famine unfolding in the besieged territory.

On Tuesday members of an international group of former leaders known as "The Elders" for the first time called the war in Gaza an "unfolding genocide" and blamed Israel for causing famine among its population.

Following a visit to the Gaza border, Helen Clark and Mary Robinson, a former prime minister of New Zealand and a former president of Ireland, said in a joint statement: "What we saw and heard underlines our personal conviction that there is not only an unfolding, human-caused famine in Gaza. There is an unfolding genocide."

Israel will again be flouting international law by forcing the Palestinians from Gaza city out of their homes and making those people trudge on. This is inhumane. They are exhausted, hungry and some are sick.

The Israeli offensive begins in September when they have 60000 reservists ready.

It’s better to move than stay in a dangerous place, Gaza City, the last bastion of hamas !

It is better to move if those bombing you allow you to move to a safe place, and supposing they are allowed out of Gaza to somewhere safe with the aid and medical care they need, do you suppose - given the history of displaced Palestinians - that once their homeland is made safe they will be allowed to return?

A quick history lesson Oreo from someone who may know a tad more than you about Lebanon.

Who was the history lesson from, please?

Sorry was implying my own knowledge, having lived in Lebanon briefly with family members living there.
Which I don’t take credit for btw but might just amount to ‘knowing a tad more’.
Perhaps the word ‘lesson’ was a bit much.

Oh and none of them are Hezbollah or in any way happy with their presence before that is levelled at me or them.

Allira Wed 20-Aug-25 20:58:34

Oh, ok!

Yes, DH went there but that was many years ago before the Civil War. He said Beirut was beautiful and fascinating then.

They are moving further South and a tent city being prepared.
It’s still in Gaza but well away away from it, many have already gone.

Beirut used to just like any other beautiful resort near the med. Our daughter taught at the American University about 16 years ago, things were better then though it was after the civil war. I remember long walks along the Corniche beside the med, dining in any number of seafront restaurants, and exploring the beautiful architecture of the French quarter.
Happy days.

You’d think it was obvious, but no it still needs saying👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

JD08202025 Wed 20-Aug-25 21:22:37

Do you really think that HAMAS in any form has the capability to destroy Israel? Yes, the had the ability to cause some trouble, but to really destroy the country?
It is an empty threat to rile up their base. Just like the Iranian "Death to America" slogan. Empty threat to get people excited.
What Israel is doing is genocide. History will not be kind to Israel and Netanyahu.

ronib Wed 20-Aug-25 21:40:42

History will be less kind to Hamas.

Anniebach Wed 20-Aug-25 21:53:43

History has never been kind to Jews. Fact

What has changed is that many countries have changed their view of Israel despite the US.
Genocide leaves a nasty stain and it will take a long time to recover. Maybe if a more moderate government is elected in October 26
they can recoup some good will.

Elections next month? That's good news.

Whoever's elected I think it will be a many many years before Israel regains the goodwill they have lost worldwide.

Yes, if one wanted to shoot one’s neighbour would one aim a gun and tell the neighbour to step aside

silverlining48 Wed 20-Aug-25 22:39:47

Valdavi the election is 2026, so unfortunately another year to wait.

silverlining48 Wed 20-Aug-25 22:41:33

I remember when Beirut was called the Paris of the east. Before the war.

Babs03 Thu 21-Aug-25 07:06:56

Correction to earlier comment when I described Beirut as a resort next to the med, definitely didn’t mean to say that, is a city not a resort.

ronib Thu 21-Aug-25 07:19:28

Beirut has been rebuilt 7 times.

I only point that out as there are various posts on here mentioning God and religion in regards to the Israeli government.

That is because the tail wagging the Israeli government are the religious Zionists.

Which is why Netanyahu is carrying out the actions that you see of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

With regard to Hezbollah it has been disarmed so is no longer a threat.

Oreo Thu 21-Aug-25 07:40:53

Yes, disarmed by the actions of Israel nothing to do with anyone in Lebanon.
There are Zionists in the government but not those who have the final say, and there is no genocide or ethnic cleansing just a determination to root out hamas members. You don’t give warnings to move if you want to kill everybody.

Israel is well aware of the condemnation by so many. Also know that Trump does not like the killing of innocent people.
Over 62000 Palestinians have been slaughtered and the world is looking on.
Israel wants the people of Gaza city
to move to the south into camps which will be guarded by the IDF.

Will Hamas stay to be killed or will they have already left.
