My conscience is 100% clear Iam64!!

My second property is (as I’ve already explained) not for our exclusive use but rented out to locals who would otherwise have nowhere decent to live.

As someone else said AR (Minister for Housing) makes a big fuss about second home owners then buys herself one! Pot, kettle, black! Now, if she had said she was buying this property to rent out to locals or even migrants then it might have earned her a little respect.

The headline in the article in today’s Times was totally misleading ( my partners just read it out to me). They do that knowing that most people won’t read the whole article …

I don't know which paper it was but they seem to realise that most people now recognise that a headline ending with a question mark or with quotation marks around one or more words is likely to be a lie. One where you have to read the article to get the truth. So this time they underlined one words!

How many houses has Jeremy Hunt got? I think it’s. 7, loads of Tory MPs have multiple properties - why a fuss about a holiday flat owned by a Labour MP provided she is open about it and pays her taxes. What a load of drivel.

Please stop behaving as if your second property is a social service. Everybody who buys or acquires a property and rents it out for profit is potentially preventing someone else from buying a home of their own. The only way you would be doing some real good is if you are charging a social rent and just covering your costs rather than charging market rent and making a profit. Which is it?

Angela Rayner is NOT Minister for Housing. Matthew Pennycook is.

Nor did all the main newspapers headline this story.

She will pay double council tax on her holiday home just as the hundreds of thousands of people who own second homes as holiday homes do.

Have you bothered to read the Spectator article or is this just you doing your usual assassination job on Rayner as you did over her clothes?

I think it's lovely that posters think it's equally great that Conservative and Reform MPs have multiple houses as long as they're open about it and pay their taxes. Equality for all! Personally I do have concerns about an ethos that we should aspire to own more than one property each while there's so much homelessness around, but I'm not about to condemn anybody who does. As long as those that do own more than one property for their exclusive use don't think fit to lecture others on the housing shortage or how these purchases in desirable holiday destinations lead to locals being priced out.

She doesn’t own 3 homes, she now owns one in her constituency and now has a holiday flat.

The one in Admiralty House is a Grace and Favour apartment, grand but not the whole house.

Ms Rayner also has use of Dorneywood at weekends if Ms Reeves doesn't need to use that residence.

I've read through the posts and I think this is just an intense dislike of Angela Rayner and Labour rather than her accomodation. I remember the green trousers one by the same poster.

This is factually correct, she owns two, and has the use of one other due to her job.

The above are all perfectly credible reasons why so many are deeply concerned by Angela Rayner's gross hypocrisy about the housing crisis in this country.

As a private individual Rayner has recently purchased a second home, the purpose of which is apparently a holiday home. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesnt turn it into a business snd rents it as a holiday home, or whatever.

The Deputy Prime Minister, has Dorneywood, which he/she shares with the Chancellor, and uses for government business like welcoming overseas officials etc.

Because she’s Deputy Leader of a government that has vigorously spoken against second home ownership and it’s negative effects upon communities and individuals.

Will she now give a speech endorsing it as a good thing?

I don't see it as ironic that someone who votes for (or represents) Labour has, or wants to have 'nice things'. To me, it's perfectly understandable that people might want to make the country a better place for others, so that there is a meritocracy that gives everyone a chance to live as good a life as as possible. The sneering at 'champagne socialism' is, to me, very similar to 'politics of envy' - ie a meaningless cliche that saves people the bother of coming up with an argument.

I am not in favour of anyone having two houses, largely because I live in a part of the country where people have made enough simply by living in a house in London to buy up so much of our local villages which then die on their feet as a direct result. They often retire to our towns, too, crowing about how the place they bought for £30k years ago would buy the whole street in an area that they have pushed out of the reach of younger generations of locals unless they have parents willing and able to help them out (that's not reading the room!). Local children often can't get places in schools that have been attended by generations of their families as 'incomers' take the places. It is very bad for my blood pressure when the same 'incomers' moan about asylum seekers wanting a better life at the expense of 'the indigenous population'

I don't care who buys second homes, as they kill villages whether it is Labour or Tory voters who occupy them for a few weeks a year, and I don't care who the landlords who buy up properties in towns vote for either. It is true that without landlords young people wouldn't have anywhere to live - that's why so-called 'market rents' are so extortionate.

As far as AR is concerned, IMO she is no better or worse than anyone else buying second homes. I assume she will pay the higher CT, as she should, so there's no more to be said, really. The system is, IMO wrong, but it is the system, and at least the current government has doubled CT as a deterrent, which is a step in the right direction if not as far as I would like to see it go.

If it turns out that AR has had insider knowledge of something coming in the next budget and got in beforehand, however, I will feel differently.

I'd just like to point out that London house prices mean that many locals can't afford to buy or rent property in their own area either. One of my sons lives in a tiny 2 up 2 down house that is way too small for their needs, but to get anything bigger they'd have to move miles away from the family support essential because one of their children is disabled. It's not all a bed of roses in London, anymore than it is elsewhere.

Rayner is a leading representative of the current government and as such should abide by their policies, which are intended to restrict the growth of second homes. She does not need a second home at present as she has unrestricted use of a smart, central apartment close to Parliament in Admiralty House, ideal for when she is working.
I live in a rural, coastal area where entire villages are wiped out because virtually all the property is second homes, which has resulted in the closure of schools, shops , pubs and medical facilities. The properties are empty for at least two thirds of the year, and the same is happening with expensive flats on the sea front,
I know Hove, and the building in question could easily have been made into affordable housing which would be inhabited all year round. One would imagine Rayner, with her interminable stories of the deprivations of her youth, would realise this, but as is clearly apparent, she is a complete hypocrite. She richly deserves all the opprobrium she is receiving.

Lots of homes in London are second homes too. Main house in the country, smaller in London for work.

I hoped that a Labour government would address the nationwide problem.

The matter of AR's houses, hypocrisy or politics is rightly subject to scrutiny and cristicism. But seriously....who thinks its ok to pursue a woman on her day off, away from work, relaxing. looking her worst and then sells the photo to make money? What kind of newspapers think this is responsible journalism..? Shabby, gossipy, nasty. And pretty much most of them have picked up this story.. tabloids and broadsheets. The Telegraph comments section on this has a miserable litany of insults focused on AR's appearance. It's horrible.
