Worth repeating what I just said ….
“It’s interesting that this wasn’t advanced on behalf of the HS in oral arguments - doubtless it was realised that this wasn’t a sensible thing to say (!) but too late, it was mentioned in the judgement - so the damage was done and the press rightly seized on this evidence of the government’s thinking.”

“Migrants are more important than residents" A statement that the Labour party will live to regret?
(411 Posts)I think so.
It was their appeal statement in Court. To overturn the previous decision about housing migrants in that hotel in Epping it was their salvo.
Well I think it’s just put a nail in their coffin.
What do you think?

Para 38 is the bit relevant to my post people and you don’t have to read the rest unless you’re a glutton for punishment!
It is clear from that para that the Home Secretary argued in written submissions that ‘the relevant public interests in play are not equal’ and her duty under the ECHR towards the ‘asylum seekers’ was of greater importance or significance than the government’s duty to ensure the safety of the residents of Epping.
That is where the newspaper quote was taken from, and the Appeal Court said they found the concept of a hierarchy of rights in this particular context ‘unattractive’.

I rest my case M’lud. 😁
It's not a direct quote.

Worth repeating - it's not a direct quote, which is what you implied.
FGT2 unfortunately this Labour Government are constantly tying themselves in knots.
The optics of this and other policies have been badly managed.
They are lacking a good coms team.
All the above add up to their position in the Polls I posted up thread.
Whatever government are in power are always looking to tackle the side effects, never the cause.
We’ve legislated ourselves to death and will never be able to legislate our way out of it. It’s too big a problem now. Turbulent times ahead.
I want to know who is telling the whole truth and who isn't.
If you present false evidence to a court of law then you commit perjury, can be charged under the Perjury Act 1911 and sent to prison.
That's why I am basing what I post here on the legal text and the evidence presented to four judges and not the deliberately incendiary rubbish uttered by Philp and Farage and published by the migrant-hating right-wing media.

^Numerous people seem to think that a DM headline is equivalent to gospel and 'proof' that the words were spoken by KS or his representatives on Earth.^
Telegraph Heading wrong as well?
Rights of asylum seekers trump people of Epping, argues Home Office
I havent looked, but what if there are 5 of them?
All wrong?
Well wrong is wrong. If the Home Office has not argued that, then it doesn't matter who says they did or how often it is repeated, does it?
One look at the supposed quote shows that it is nonsense. Who are 'the people of Epping? Do they speak as one? I doubt it. Who is 'The Home Office' in this context? Why not name the spokesperson and what s/he actually said? Does anyone really think that a representative of the HO would use vocabulary like that in such a febrile situation?
It is clear from that para that the Home Secretary argued in written submissions that ‘the relevant public interests in play are not equal’ and her duty under the ECHR towards the ‘asylum seekers’ was of greater importance or significance than the government’s duty to ensure the safety of the residents of Epping.
You are saying that this is not true?
It depends what you mean by true.
The phrase 'It is clear from that para' shows that the following text is an interpretation, so not 'true' in the pure sense of the word.
If you are asking whether the rights of asylum seekers is of greater importance or significance than the government's duty to ensure the safety of the people of Epping, then again, it comes down to whether you want the legal situation or an emotional one.
Legally, it is true that Article 3 of the ECHR insists that the government has a duty to house destitute asylum seekers, so that duty takes priority over concerns of local people when the actual situation is that there has been one reported sex crime committed by an asylum seeker and many more by residents of the area. A reasonable person would see the concerns as disproportionate to reality, so the decision to delay the closing of the Bell Hotel has to take priority.
The emotional argument would be that one assault is one too many, and the fact that agitators are whipping up anger will make residents feel generally unsafe is also likely to be true.
A court has to take account of the legal argument.
The phrase 'It is clear from that para' shows that the following text is an interpretation, so not 'true' in the pure sense of the word.
But it goes on the say that The Home Secretary argued....
So is true is it not?
Legally, it is true that Article 3 of the ECHR insists that the government has a duty to house destitute asylum seekers, so that duty takes priority over concerns of local people
And again, that is true as well?
So FGT2 is correct in everything she has written?

Regarding the barge at Dorset, they use these in the Netherlands unopposed.
Of course they do, it’s a country with a lot of common sense.

I certainly think so.
There are posters, the minute FGT shows, are on the defensive and start heavily kicking. This is unfair, as the lady has great courage and only says what many think but are silent in the face of such people. Always the same names.

It’s unfair and it’s also bullying behaviour Boz.
Same old, same old names. I don’t even bother reading as soon as the names pop up now.
FGT is always open and honest and her posts are really worth reading.

^I have asked many times “ what possible benefits can unskilled, often uneducated, single young men who have no documents to prove who they are, bring to our country?”^
Indeed you may have, but what proof do you have that what you are claiming is correct?
I am asking a genuine question but failing to get an answer yet again. Why bother answering with another question?
My question is 100% correct.

The country is not ‘being flooded’, despite what the media, Tories and Reform would have you believe.
Those seeking asylum via ‘irregular’ routes (because there are no ‘regular’ routes) make up a tiny minority of the immigrants in this, upon whom we depend.
Thank God for the Human Rights lawyers who tried to maintain the dignity of this country by supporting those fleeing war and oppression. We used to be a country that offered sanctuary to those in need.
I realise my view is unpopular on GN - I’m fine with that.
I support your view. Its a shame that so many are taken in by Reform's and the far right rhetoric. Farage is a good speaker, as was Hitler, who convinced the Germans that the country's problems were being caused by the Jewish population. We all know what that led to!

Yes the same old bullies but never with an answer. Just jargon, vehemence in shouting down others. They really think they’re right and in the majority. It’s laughable.
Britain is a tolerant and compassionate country. We have a proud tradition of welcoming people fleeing persecution and abuse. Schemes like Homes for Ukraine, Hong Kong humanitarian visas, and the Syrian resettlement programme have provided important routes for refugees seeking sanctuary. But the system needs to be controlled and managed and we need strong borders. The small boats crisis, fuelled by dangerous criminal smuggler gangs, is undermining our security and costing lives.
Rather than a serious plan to confront this crisis, the Conservatives have offered nothing but desperate gimmicks. Their flagship policy – to fly a tiny number of asylum seekers to Rwanda – has already cost hundreds of millions of pounds. Even if it got off the ground, this scheme can only address fewer than one per cent of the asylum seekers arriving. It cannot work. Chaos in the Channel has been matched by chaos at home. The Conservatives’ unworkable laws have created a ‘perma-backlog’ of tens of thousands of asylum seekers, who are indefinitely staying in hotels costing the taxpayer millions of pounds every week.
Labour will stop the chaos and go after the criminal gangs who trade in driving this crisis. We will create a new Border Security Command, with hundreds of new investigators, intelligence officers, and cross-border police officers. This will be funded by ending the wasteful Migration and Economic Development partnership with Rwanda. This new Command will work internationally and be supported by new counter-terrorism style powers, to pursue, disrupt, and arrest those responsible for the vile trade. We will seek a new security agreement with the EU to ensure access to real-time intelligence and enable our policing teams to lead joint investigations with their European counterparts.
Labour will turn the page and restore order to the asylum system so that it operates swiftly, firmly, and fairly; and the rules are properly enforced. We will hire additional caseworkers to clear the Conservatives’ backlog and end asylum hotels, saving the taxpayer billions of pounds.
Labour will set up a new returns and enforcement unit, with an additional 1,000 staff, to fast-track removals to safe countries for people who do not have the right to stay here. We will negotiate additional returns arrangements to speed up returns and increase the number of safe countries that failed asylum seekers can swiftly be sent back to. And we will also act upstream, working with international partners to address the humanitarian crises which lead people to flee their homes, and to strengthen support for refugees in their home region.
Labour Party Manifesto
This is what people voted for, as the Tories had failed to get a grip on illegal immigration and people in small boats arriving here. Almost 14 months later and nothing has improved.
Who are these people?
What I can see on this page alone are attempts at bullying anyone who does not agree with the OP on this matter into submission and/or silence. If people want to make a point about other posters, why not address them personally instead of using the passive aggressive 'some posters' strategy?
I have questioned some of the rhetoric. Does that make me a bully? Am I one of the 'same old' people who are' laughable' and whose people don't bother to read? If so, I'd rather know, and if not, I'd quite like to know that, too, as it has come across that way, and the implications are rather upsetting. I thought this was somewhere to discuss and debate, but it seems not these days.
Sorry - I cross posted with Allira and forgot to quote woodenspoon's post above hers, as I am rather upset.

Posters are not stupid, even if you may think they are.
We do know the difference between legal and illegal immigration, people who are welcomed here and arrive by the proper channels, work hard and contribute to society.
We also know there are asylum seekers fleeing persecution but amongst them are others who have destroyed their papers for whatever reason and others who are brought here to work in illegal industries, for OCG, who are thriving here and causing misery to many young people with their activities.
