Admits she didn’t pay enough tax. She cried this morning, on a SKY interview. Said she’d received poor legal advice, didn’t pay enough stamp duty on her new home in Hove and has referred herself to the Ethics Committee. Starmer still supports her.

Will she survive this debacle do we think?

“I know the ages of her kids by the way”…
so why make it sound as if she was neglecting them in some way hmm?

I never said she neglected them. I queried why she did not have the kids with her at the seaside.

Why would she ‘have her kids with her at the sea side’

Maybe it wasn't her access weekend. Maybe her kids were doing other things and didn't want to be with their mother at the seaside. The fact that they weren't there doesn't mean that, in part, she resigned to stop the press intruding on their family life. The Trust details were to do with that. She had already admitted her mistake about the tax in her resignation letter.

She should have done as Farage did. He said he had bought the house in his constituency but actually used his partner to buy the house in Clacton so less stamp duty to be paid.

Yes she should!

If it were me I’d want to sell that flat in Hove. ‘Unlucky’ doesn’t even cover it.

I’d be thinking “when I got the keys I was Deputy Prime Minister, now look at it all”.

No thanks. Too many awful memories of a time I’d rather forget.

Aveline Sat 06-Sept-25 10:28:06

Maybe she'll be gradually back over time? I hope so anyway.

Allira Sat 06-Sept-25 10:41:44

Yes, of course she will!

They usually bounce back when the furore dies down.

I hope so too.

I did see a picture of Angela Rayner on the beach with a group of people, one looked very much like a teenage boy., which could have well been one of the sons. I imagine like most separated couples the children shuttle between both parents. These situations are personal and not always easy, but aside from the debacle over her housing situation, I'm sure she takes her parental responsibilities as seriously as the next person.

She has such a glowing endorsement from KS, that I don’t expect it to be too long either.

If she is considering returning to high level politics, although I sincerely hope she won't, she should use all the extra time she has on her hands now to enrol in Ruskin College and start a programme of education, as John Prescott and many other Labour MPs have done.
She still has her job and an extremely good income. I feel more pity for the excellent MPs of all parties who lost their jobs because of the false promises Labour made.
Sickened by the unwarranted adulation heaped on Rayner.

I think Tax Planning is quite a long course, eazybee. 😉

Whatever else is learned from this it’s clear that our tax regulations need to be simplified.
Angela Rayner is not foolish. It seems pretty clear that she acted in good faith and I hope she survives all this. petty spite.

Agree. I sincerely hope she'll be back in some capacity and soon. Her grit and authenticity will be missed.

Visgir1 Sat 06-Sept-25 13:22:07

I'm expecting to see her soon on "I'm a Celebrity".
She's finnished as credible MP.

I don’t think I can remember so much venom aimed at an MP before sad. Do you honestly think she would lower herself to Farages level and appear on IACGMOOH?

westendgirl Sat 06-Sept-25 14:04:22

Angela Rayner has resigned. Now please leave her and her family alone. Enough of the nasty snide comments, surely?

Crossstitchfan Sat 06-Sept-25 14:19:46

I agree, westendgirl. One thing I hate about Gransnet is how, when someone is criticised for something or other, some Gransnetters leap on the chance to ridicule, despise and otherwise act ‘holier than thou’ regarding the person concerned.
Make a comment about somebody, yes. Criticise somebody, yes to that too. I must admit to being guilty of that. But is it necessary to go on and on about it? Think of the person involved - whatever they have done, they probably feel pretty bad once they read the first few posts that criticise them. That’s ok - the posters probably want them to feel that way. But to go on and on about the same thing borders on cruelty and we shouldn’t stoop that low. Everybody is human. Everybody makes mistakes.
If I happened to be famous, I would be terrified of doing much at all knowing there’s a bunch of baying hounds waiting to tear me to threads.
Have a little compassion and common sense, people.

undines Sat 06-Sept-25 14:42:23

Honestly if she did not know what she was doing she should not be in parliament, let alone a government minister. Come on!

Doodledog Sat 06-Sept-25 15:38:43

Well said, Crossstitchfan. At times, when I read GN I feel profoundly depressed at how mean-spirited people can be. On the other hand, it shows how lucky I am to mix with the people I do - from many different backgrounds and political viewpoints, but all basically kindly people.

I feel sorry for her,I think she made a genuine mistake and tried to put it right.Unfortunately she is vilified by the right wing media for being a working class woman who love her or hate her is a good communicator and she is authentic .She resigned for much less than the corrupt Toriesever did.And there was very little mentioned about Farage’s badmouthing of Britain when he was in the U.S.So she fell on her sword to put an end to the matter.

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 16:38:14

A comedian was arrested by 5 armed police for a tweet. Somebody should be talking about it. If as a society you don't want people to badmouth you, don't as a society behave like a lunatic.

That depends on her constituents, surely?
