Admits she didn’t pay enough tax. She cried this morning, on a SKY interview. Said she’d received poor legal advice, didn’t pay enough stamp duty on her new home in Hove and has referred herself to the Ethics Committee. Starmer still supports her.

Will she survive this debacle do we think?

There will be a full paper trail of all the advice she was given, the information she supplied to the advisers and a timeline of events surely?

You'd like to think so (not you specifically) but this is the labour party - it's either been shredded or doctored 😉

Don't be ridiculous!

Details of Tony Blair's expenses were unfortunately shredded when investigations began into the expenses scandal.......

Having worked for a solicitor in my younger days, all I would say is that there are plenty of other people who avoided paying Stamp Duty on house purchases, helped needlessly to say, by Financial Advisors or similar. Perhaps HMRC or the government need to check this out more carefully.

Casdon Thu 04-Sept-25 17:18:36

Unfortunate choice of words Bazza, we had just been discussing extremists.

One thing I do wonder is whether as a result of this, there will be additional requirements for all MPs to declare the full details of their property transactions to the parliamentary watchdog through their declaration of interests. I suspect there will be a lot of scrambling going on behind the scenes just now.

I’m sure you’re right, especially having worked for a solicitor whose advice seems to be at the root of this current issue.
But is the they did it first excuse ever valid?

These days lawyers have much stronger protection agreements and will blame non disclosure by the client, this type fraud is common most dont get discovered, some lawyers dont ask the questions.
The question would be “ do you intend to live in the property”
“Yes” it’s that easy to save £40k ———-

Realky Thu 04-Sept-25 17:28:20

What does it matter? If she bought a second house, she had to pay the stamp duty, and it would have been refunded to her when she sold her share in the first house. It's a lot of fuss about nothing.

Nannapat1 Thu 04-Sept-25 17:40:20

I agree with Spinnaker: I hope not.

“Tax Evader Rayner” has been graffitied onto the Hove apartment development. A step too far in my opinion.

Let’s hold fire and wait for the outcome of the investigation by the Ethics Committee.

Or a statement from the firm that apparently gave ‘bad advice’.

It just says Tax Evader, I’ve seen a picture of the graffiti. I’d be freaked out if my house was identified and shown on the TV, or if I lived in another flat in that complex, because it becomes a nutcase magnet.

I knew I’d not made it up Casdon.

So you support willful tax evasion

Apologies FGT2, I’d seen it on Sky News, and there was only one picture, outside what looked like a front door, I didn’t realise there were three or four more in different places. Guaranteed nobody looking will be in any doubt about where she lives then.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 04-Sept-25 18:04:58

Apology accepted Casdon.

Apparently even James O’Brien on LBC said today “she has to go”.

And now the firm responsible for the conveyancing said “not us guv we advised Rayner consult a tax expert regarding Stamp Duty”.

It’s all coming out now …. Slowly.

If I were Angela Rayner I would resign tonight to keep my head held high. Unless of course the tax accountants are to blame?

More to follow yet on this story.

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

I think she should stay as an MP but perhaps consider her post as Secretary of State for Housing. She may have been badly advised or did not follow advice but it's all rather uncomfortable.

Why don't you read her statement?

Because it’s all lies.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 04-Sept-25 18:21:08

I have just reported my own post about Angela Rayner’s house valuation in A-u-L as it is quoted directly from The Telegraph (which I subscribe to) but is of course behind a paywall. I ought not to have C&P it.

I have apologised to the mods for being a nuisance. They have enough work to do I’m sure!

Again it involves a Family Trust.

This one was set up in 2003.

Some very judgemental people on here, before the case has even been properly examined.
She has actually supported her disabled son financially, while trying to keep her family circumstances private. Most of the press are hounding her as well, implying she must be 'guilty'. How unjust.

I agree.

And this, the owner of the Daily Mail:
The Harmsworth family controls the media empire through offshore entities, such as a Bermuda-registered company and trusts in the British Virgin Islands, which hold the family's business and property interests.
Inheritance tax avoidance:
By holding assets through offshore structures and claiming non-dom status, the family aims to avoid paying British inheritance tax on the transfer of wealth to future generations.

Posted in haste. Applause to Realky ‘s post as it identifies the real serious hypocrisy here

SaxonGrace Thu 04-Sept-25 18:40:38

had this been a member of any of the opposition she would be up there leading the attack. Had this been you or I as ordinary citizens HMRC would likely have had us facing charges, ignorance of the law has never been an excuse. However I suspect Starmer will not sack her.

FranP Thu 04-Sept-25 18:48:08

A super busy woman, with a very demanding 24/7 type job, who has no legal or accounting qualifications, living miles from her family and needing a home. Brighton is an easy commute into central London (thousands do it daily).

Me, I would hand my details over to my property solicitor and expect him to do his job properly. Sadly, this is an example of one not doing so. If anyone should resign, perhaps it should be them. (We are also currently having to deal with one who did not either).

It is also an example of Tory party trying to make it her fault, not because they care, but because they want to stir the pot about something irrelevant.
