Asylum system ...seems mad in this case!

It appears he was refused asylum because the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Schemme is closed not because of his application being considered against clear criteria for granting asylum. Meanwhile the NHS needs trauma surgeons ...and he is volunteering with a homeless charity in order to do something useful as he is not allowed to work!! Am I missing something here?🙄

I daresay many coming to our country have skills that we could benefit from but what a crackers and painfully slow system it is before they can be working and helping the economy.

Madgran77 Fri 05-Sept-25 13:26:49

Agreed. But he has actually been refused asylum because a scheme has closed not because of any clear asylum criteria; which makes it even more ridiculous!!

Madgran77 Fri 05-Sept-25 13:27:50

...in other words he will never be able to work here as likely to be sent back! He's appealing but ...!

GrannyGravy13 Fri 05-Sept-25 13:28:21

Sir Starmer closed the scheme July this year.

Madgran77 Fri 05-Sept-25 13:45:05

Yes! Bit surely granting asylum should be based on clear criteria regarding asylum because of specific danger or whatever rather than because a scheme has closed. I'm searching for clear list of criteria used to grant/reject asylum but have not found it yet

I agree that this country has dire need of the skills that some of these asylum seekers possess. They need to be fast tracked on a point system and set to work asap.
But our immigration system is not fit for purpose.

It's good to see the Daily Mail standing up for an asylum seeker.

I read thin in the DT this morning, it beggars belief.

This man should be given asylum, no questions.

I can't read the article Madgran but from what you say isn't it likely that he just couldn't be fast-tracked?

They have speeded up the process but it seems to me to make sense to speed it up even more and probably worth finding the money to do that - but then we come to the "where from?"

butterandjam Fri 05-Sept-25 17:35:53

worth a look.

Agreed!! And at least have his application considered based on his situation NOT on some bureaucratic "scheme" being closed!!

I dont think so as it says his application has been refused. He is appealing against that decision. If not fast tracked then it wouldn't have been refused presumably?

Perhaps some of the other people we know nothing about but are prepared to pre judge ,should be given asylum?

Rather than trot out rhetoric about them being sex offenders and scroungers and people who throw their documents in the sea?

Just a thought.

Personally I have never done that on or off GN!

About 70% of them are given asylum aren’t they?

StripeyGran Fri 05-Sept-25 18:57:54

"them"

I have no idea how in the present climate ,anybody knows the percentage of those seeking asylum who are then moved onto refugee status.

That's quite shocking. It's one time I hope the press can bring pressure to bear. Thanks for sorting it out for me.

Madgran77 Fri 05-Sept-25 20:51:40

PoliticsNerd Agreed. But it's not exactly making headline news is it. Ofcourse one also has to assume that what is being reported is accurate ...but on the information reported in the Press so far, yes it is shocking.

Thanks I did above but didnt work. Came up as error. Read it from your new link. Interesting re Covid stuff and leaving country "illegally"- not sure who is judging this though regarding the present govt. in Afghanistan and his statements against them
