Charlie Kirk shot

(1001 Posts)

Isn’t it ironic that someone who made statements that some gun deaths are inevitable and justifiable to protect 2nd Amendment rights. - was shot by someone whose “rights” he was protecting.
Before anyone jumps on me - of course no one should be murdered for their views.

Kandinsky Sat 13-Sept-25 12:51:42

I’ve had 2 terminations over the years ( very early ) Charlie Kirk would say I’m a murderer and should rot in hell. ( although to be fair he’s not the only one with those views )
I’m a strong believer in free speech, and unless you’re inciting violence you should be able to say what you like.
So someone like me, ( plus homosexuals and any other people he can’t stand ) just have to put up with it.

daughterofbonniebelle Sat 13-Sept-25 12:53:48

There is apparently a school shooting every day in the States.

There was one yesterday, and we have hardly heard anything about it.

But we have heard plenty about a man hung by his own petard.

ronib Sat 13-Sept-25 13:38:42

No Kandinsky Charlie Kirk wasn’t into assigning places in heaven or hell. My take is that he felt a need to redress the balance away from the rights of the mother to include rights for the foetus. He thought that an embryo was a baby.

MaizieD Sat 13-Sept-25 13:43:01

Abortion is such a red herring in this discussion. Ab shouldn't have mentioned it, or I shouldn't have responded.

Apologies

How about his views on homosexuals, women's roles, televised executions, inferiority of black people etc. etc.?

IOMGran Sat 13-Sept-25 13:52:46

Yes, the whataboutery lot have repurposed this thread for reasons...

StripeyGran Sat 13-Sept-25 13:54:36

I've seen posters here idolizing Trump and Farage.

AGAA4 Sat 13-Sept-25 14:01:11

Charlie Kirk's views reminded me of the views held by many in the UK in the 1950s.
Women should stay at home and look after their man and children whether they wanted to or not. I know how frustrated my mum was by this thinking.
Black people were not to be allowed in my neighbourhood.
Homosexuals called queers were attacked regularly. A friend of my mum's son was beaten to death for being gay.
Having an abortion was deemed a huge disgrace.
I'm glad here in the UK many of us have moved on from these views.
It seems that in the US some are still embracing those views.

Oreo

I hadn’t heard of him either, but haven’t seen any posts on here idolising him or even almost idolising him.
What I have seen on here by posters is very much disliking the idea that someone can be shot dead for airing opinions.

Oreo idolise:

“to admire someone or something.”

Synonyms with examples from oxford dictionary.org

*admire: I’ve always admired her for her generous spirit.

*respect: I respect her for what she has achieved.

*think highly of: Everyone thinks highly of him.

*hold someone in high esteem: Her colleagues in Washington hold her in very high esteem.

*hold someone in high regard: He contributed much to the life of York, and was held in high regard there.

*look up to: She was my older sister and I looked up to her.

Where are the posts idolising or admiring or holding him in high regard or esteem?

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Sept-25 14:37:55

OK Oreo, if it makes you feel better, you’re right and I’m wrong.

I’m not spending my time going through 21 pages and referencing posts just to prove a point.

I explained my thinking in my post to Galaxy, trying to search for understanding of others’ views, rather than this permanent antagonism.

So, you do you. I don’t care.

Have a nice weekend!

Allira Sat 13-Sept-25 14:47:50

So, you do you

While that sounds incredibly rude, apparently it means to be one's authentic self, to be true to one's beliefs.

Which is, in fact the whole premise of all this, whether other people like it or not, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

It doesn't mean one person is wrong because another person is right. It means opinions may vary.

Re views in this country not being akin to Kirk’s:
Boris Johnson was an admirer of Kirk’s.

Oreo Sat 13-Sept-25 14:54:19

Why so aggressive LizzieDrip ?
I hadn’t seen a single post saying anything idolising or holding Kirk in high regard and I have read TFT.
Most posters just don’t like the idea of being shot dead for the opinions you hold.confused

IOMGran Sat 13-Sept-25 14:54:44

It Means Lizzie doesn't care about whatever Oreo is saying. Not enough to argue back and forth, which is a wise thing to do as it's like playing chess with a pigeon.

It wouldn't just have been putting up with a differing opinion. Terminations would be banned and you would end up with a conviction (possibly prison) if you had one. It's not my business to pry into your personal life, but I expect having to bring up a child you didn't really want would have changed your life.

There is a movement in the US to keep women in their place ie in the home, looking after children and submitting to their husband. It's not just an opinion. Laws are being changed, so that abortions are banned and it's more difficult for women to live independently, etc. It's turning the clock back at least 50 years and undoing what at least two generations of feminists have achieved.

Oreo Sat 13-Sept-25 14:57:57

Boris Johnson is hardly a shining example. How many scandals is he embroiled in now? All to do with misuse of funds provided by the UK taxpayer.

It's a red herring fallacy. If you know you've been found to be in the wrong, change the subject!

IOMGran Sat 13-Sept-25 15:30:51

Oreo I don't like apologists for misogynistic, anti gay, white supremacists. I have daughters, one of whom is gay and we have many gay friends. i don't intend to pretend people like Kirk just had opinions. They wish harm on me and mine, and I respond like a mother.

That's true IOM gran in response to my post and it had no relevance there either.

My kids are mixed race, I was looking at photos of them on holiday yesterday and said to DH I worry for one GC as he is darker than the others and I worry about him being targeted. DH said it's like going back to his life in the 50s. So I agree with you, for us it is personal.
