Isn’t it ironic that someone who made statements that some gun deaths are inevitable and justifiable to protect 2nd Amendment rights. - was shot by someone whose “rights” he was protecting.
Before anyone jumps on me - of course no one should be murdered for their views.

Thank you ronib surely there would have been many of faith there and not being converted when there

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 12:18:59

Hitler was a lapsed Catholic.theworriedwell There’s a huge difference.

Anniebach I was struck by Erika’s very loving marriage and the idea that her husband wanted to please her and make her happy. This isn’t necessarily a religious idea but it is very missing from the way marriages work in the West. It fascinates me….

Casdon Mon 22-Sept-25 12:22:16

Being a practicing member of any faith does not mean somebody is a better person ronib. Faith is so often used as a cover for evil.

You said she had a Catholic upbringing and so did he so not sure what the difference is in that. He was Baptised and Confirmed according to Google, presumably he had also made his First Confession and First Holy Communion.

Yes a very loving marriage, thinking of marriage vows he certainly was committed to them ronib I found and still find his death horrific

I wish people would stop bringing Hitler into discussions. He was clearly a deranged psychopath. Charlie Kirk and his followers were certainly not deranged and certainly not psychopathic. Trump isn’t,either, despite what most seem to think of him on here. If I was an American I think I would support him. Not the case ,though and I don’t think he is doing the rest of us much good .

theworriedwell Mon 22-Sept-25 12:43:20

Well I mentioned Hitler but it was because apparently we can't compare what's going on in America to 1930s Germany as his wife was brought up as a Catholic. I actually think Hitler being brought up as a Catholic is relevant information but you can always ignore that.

Oreo Mon 22-Sept-25 12:45:10

I agree about the Hitler thing nanna8 it happens so much on forums that it would make a good drinking game.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 12:45:49

The Crusades, The Reformation, The Spanish Inquisition, Twin Towers, October 7, for example- difficult to define where evil lies in faith?

nanna8 Mon 22-Sept-25 12:54:01

Ah well- as my Pastor says, we are all sinners, ‘saved’ or not.

Casdon Mon 22-Sept-25 12:56:25

Faith is used to excuse evil. It’s not difficult to define, because no faith promotes evil deeds, it is people who interpret faith to give them permission to carry them out.

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 22-Sept-25 13:29:07

ronib, I was surprised to see that you think that marriages " in the West" are not loving, and do not feature husbands who want to please their wives and make them happy.
Is this your experience? It's not mine.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 13:49:12

Well after 50 years of wedded ?, I can honestly say that I have never received any kind of note from DH asking what he can do to make me happy.
I am working on it. Chocolatelovinggran

Indeed.

May I enquire why it matters if one is a Catholic - Christian?

keepingquiet Mon 22-Sept-25 14:24:19

The devil makes play where anything other than humility abounds.

Unfortunately too many Christians are not humble...

I'm sorry but I don't understand your question Norah.

Why does it matter his wife was raised Catholic?

keepingquiet Mon 22-Sept-25 14:34:19

Ah! It doesn't- in fact, the fact that Charlie Kirk (who I never heard about until he was shot) was an Evangelical is of no interest to me whatsoever.

Agreed. My interest in in my own Catholic faith, not in the faith of other people I had never heard of before the shooting.

keepingquiet Mon 22-Sept-25 14:48:15

Me too Norah!

theworriedwell Mon 22-Sept-25 15:13:18

It doesn't matter that she was raised a Catholic. Someone mentioned things getting like 1930 Germany and ronib felt Kirk's wife being raised a Catholic meant that wasn't true. I pointed out Hitler was raised a Catholic so I couldn't see why Erika's religious upbringing affected that. I still don't see why it was brought up.

ronib Mon 22-Sept-25 15:14:50

Considering that Charlie Kirk was pretty mainstream Catholic in his views, unlike say the Church of England who doesn’t have hard rules in quite the same way, it must be of some interest? If only to be aware of the dangers?

Dangers of what?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 22-Sept-25 15:16:17

The tribute rally was scary.

The Christian nationalists appear to have little to do with Christianity.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 22-Sept-25 15:17:35

Kirk was absolutely not mainstream catholic in his views😮.

The pope would have something to say about that remark!
