Considering that Charlie Kirk was pretty mainstream Catholic in his views, unlike say the Church of England who doesn’t have hard rules in quite the same way, it must be of some interest? If only to be aware of the dangers?

I was chatting to a lovely German couple the other day and they actually said ( without any input from me ) that what’s happening in America reminds them of pre war Germany.

I felt quite sick watching Trump in that video. This was a memorial service for a young family man tbh I didn't like his politics but for Trump to turn this occasion into what basically became a political rally was disrespectful in the extreme. Does this man have no boundaries?

And the sick idiocy of continuing to support the gun and war like culture and doing nothing to limit the sale of automatic weapons (as opposed to rifles, sport - I don't like it a lot but its clearly a different matter).

Yes, it was known when he was chosen that he was "conservative" on those issues.

I was looking at the time that progress on women having more power in the church would be halted, but progressive on other social and political concerns.

Its not just matter of "involving" women in some way. Ie its fine to organise events and so on, but theologically the current pope believes that women cannot intercede between the congregation of Catholics and God, only men can let the words of god pass as it were, through them, for them.

I fear that it's not just the traditional Catholics in the USA have this POV, either, in Christian Churches.

(Progressive Catholics have a very different POV ie some will use contraception).

What we have won as women is under threat, is it not, big time, if we in the UK follow these paths.

Good news. Jimmy Kimmel has been restored to his show.

I read that Disney, the parent company of ABC, lost $3b because do many people cancelled services in protest. I have no idea if that is true or not as I didn't care to look it up. I do know a lot of people said they cancelled their service.

I know Target is still reeling from the continuing boycott, so I could believe the cancellations have hit Disney hard.

The most important thing is that the man did nothing wrong, he didn't say anything remotely horrible and should never have been removed.

Interestingly, I think Disney is about to be a case study on why corporations should stay out of politics and culture wars. Target as well.

The anti-Trump crowd is super mad for pulling Kimmel, which could cause them to lose money. I expect the pro-Trump crowd to be upset that Kimmel was allowed to return, which could cause them to lose money.

It's going to rebound every where. It already has on womens' health particularly around abortion. men return to being the "Heads of the Family" and if you then cut contraception an abortion or severely limit it ...

Catholicism in the US is not the same as the Evangelical Movement which has funded Republican politics for years. The Evangelical Church, to which Kirk belonged, as far as I can figure, is a Protestant movement which supports unfettered capitalism and upholds right wing political idealogies.
It uses the Bible as a screen for its political support for Israel, in particular.

We really have no equivalent in the UK.

I found it interesting that Mr Trump spoke at the memorial service/ rally for Mr Kirk about not loving his enemies, and, in fact, wishing bad things for them.
Only a few weeks ago, he was talking about his desire to attain heaven on his demise.
Well, Mr Trump, I wonder if you have taken your chances down a notch or two.

Having watched several videos of the service it was IMO a disrespectful, overtly political rally that encouraged hatred towards people who were "radical lefties" to use their expression ie anyone who wasn't a Maga supporter. I can't help thinking that Trump is using this murder to deflect interest in his association with Epstein. There's a branch of Maga that is very concerned in finding out the truth of who was involved with Epstein and committed crimes against young women.
