I came across this new 'group' today. It seems to have been launched a couple of days ago, though no doubt it has been some time in the planning stage.

From its website:

Mainstream is a network initiated by Labour members of Compass and the Open Labour National Committee with the support of many others from across the Labour Party and labour movement.

Not being a Labour member I don't know the implications of Compass and the Open Labour National Committee. For all I know some Labour Party members may dislike them.

However, the group's aims seem for more in tune with Labour as I would expect it to be. They call what they ask for 'radical realism' and explain what they think it means:

It means putting equity and justice at the heart of everything Labour does. It means rejecting an economy based on inequality and environmental destruction, and instead building one that shares the resources our society needs.

It means fighting for public services that meet these needs, inspire pride in collective provision and are built on long-term investment and the wisdom of the workers and users who sustain them. It means standing for the human rights and dignity of every person, defending liberty, protest and social protection at home and abroad, along with strong defences tied to democracy and the rule of international law.

There is a bit more but I won't quote it all..

As Andy Burnham is top signatory of founder members I think this could be an interesting development.
It also includes Clive Lewis who I think is one of the few politicians who understands how a national economy should work.

I'm interested in what others think.

Am afraid I am a grumpy sceptic when it comes to politics, I tend to believe that nothing can change politically whilst the ruling elites pull every government’s strings.

Thanks MaizieD, I’m still a LP member but I’m not active in our CLP. We have a good new Labour mp. Visible in the constituency and active here and in Westminster. Andy Burnham helped with campaigning and we have a number of good young MPs in our region
So far so good
I’m as disappointed as everyone about poor comms, poor planning and communication with members and back benchers. I’m livid about Mandelson
Will find out more about Mainstream

Anyone can write a pamphlet but delivery is always a different matter.

Nailed by Babs.

Exactly. All governments Nd political parties dance to the tune of the ruling elites.

I am politically homeless, in the lookout for somewhere to hang my hat

Will be interesting to watch.

Steer well clear of anything to do with Andy Burnham. He pretends to be Mr Nice and just an ordinary bloke from a humble background.

He is like self a styled Boris Johnson of the North and has wasted a to n on money on silly transport schemes.

He is very ambitious and only out for himself and his Transport Consultant wife.

Mainstream probably mean well and their aims and values are very laudable.

Not going to happen

MaizieD Thu 11-Sept-25 20:48:16

Is this opinion a Labour supporter's point of view, WithNobsOnIt?

MaizieD Thu 11-Sept-25 20:48:57

Opinion of Burnham, I mean

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-25 21:36:29

I’ve met Andy Burnham - don’t share withknobson opinion

Oreo Thu 11-Sept-25 21:39:27

This isn’t Corbyn’s new political party is it?

Casdon Thu 11-Sept-25 21:53:45

No, Corbyn’s Party is known as Your Party for now. It would be ironic if his Party was called Mainstream, surely.

Oreo Thu 11-Sept-25 21:56:14

Thought he may be trying to attract votes?

Casdon Thu 11-Sept-25 22:06:04

I think he would like to attract more MPs, but he’d probably choke if they suggested Mainstream as name for his party, Mavericks would be more appropriate, although it’s already been taken.

MG55 Thu 11-Sept-25 22:15:56

We love Andy Burnham in the North West. Proud that he is our proactive mayor and everything he does is to improve our lot 👏👏👏

MG55 Thu 11-Sept-25 22:19:00

You are the only person I have come across to not like Andy Burnham. Can you explain what you base your views on please?

😀

If you’d followed my link, or even read my OP, you could have answered your own question.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Sept-25 00:19:45

I went to my Labour Party branch meeting tonight and we discussed Mainstream. I really, really like it and what people were saying. It's firmly holding onto to socialist values but not the politics of Corbyn. Everyone there approved, our branch is known as the "sensible lot"

We also discussed who should be the Deputy Prime minister, and agrees that Lucy Powell was best. she was sacked by Starmer but represents Mainstream politics.

Commonsense is prevailing, Starmer has sacked Peter Mandelson too.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Sept-25 00:24:05

Of course Andy Burnham has made mistakes, WithNobsOnIt.

We all make mistakes, including him, and hopefully learn from them:

and he has. He is generally thought well of even by those who disagree with him for he has brought money to the region and is one of the hardest workers in politics.

Anniebach Fri 12-Sept-25 05:17:42

Clive Lewis , supporter of Marc Wadsworth !

Babs03 Fri 12-Sept-25 07:18:47

I am no originally from a town not far from Manchester and friends from that neck of the woods love Andy Burnham, they see him as someone who has consistently fought for Manchester and the North West in a country that is London centric.
I really don’t have much time for politicians if any hue but I respect Burnham for being a bloody good mayor for Mancunians.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Sept-25 07:20:15

This isn’t a new party but a group of individuals working to try to steer Labour back to “first principles” it seems to me.

Well, I’m all for that, because unless Labour gets back on track, I like many others will find ourselves looking to cast our vote elsewhere.

The three headlined issues would be a good start.
