Growstuff, I don't think Sharia Law is recognised here and cannot understand why it is allowed. How demeaning for women to go through a Sharia wedding to please relatives, I wouldn't. How can you respect a man that expects that. It is meaningless and shows how unimportant a woman is A church wedding have couples equal. I didn't say obey, not many would. .They should be banned.

People can have non legal ceremonies if they want. I've been invited to pagan weddings in the woods or on a beach. A jumping the broom "wedding". If that is what fits with their beliefs how does it affect anyone else?

I think a good deal of what gets said is "sharia law" is actually patriarchal societal customs of some countries or groups. You don't have to look far to see how the same thing happens with other religions, Some of the more extreme American Christians groups are extremely restrictive to women's rights.
