ID cards at long last

Hasn’t this got to be approved by the H of C’s and Lords before it becomes law?

Does the cost outweigh the "benefit"? What is the real benefit? It's a 'no" from me but only for those reasons as I've nothing to hide

People are looking for simple ways to show their protest against this government, they have just handed them the perfect opportunity.

The problem is people want the penny and the bun. Do you think another government would scrap the idea? I don’t, I think they know it has to be done, however unpopular, best to get Labour to do the dirty work though, obviously.

Must be able to get into them somehow escaped, why bother going to all the trouble of stealing them if they can’t ever use them. It’s hundreds per day that are stolen.

Supposedly for those who want to work, at least initially. Employers mzy be sble to check to find if person is entitled to be in country and work. How will the process stop unscrupulous employers (pay cash in hand types) using those people.

Store your UD card in your phones wallet, you do not need a phone signal to open or view.

Why? So that someone could try & steal my phone, which contains my ID. I rather not take that chance.

To be honest I don't remember this in the labour manifesto. Then again, I don't remember most of what they have done to date being in their manifesto….

I really don’t see why, if a system works well in other countries, it couldn’t work equally well in the UK. Some people have strong objections, but for most people I don’t think that’s the issue, rather it is the fear of change. If it’s introduced for working age adults first though, the glitches will surely be ironed out before we are issued with them?

It’s not the fear of change, it’s the fear that data can be misused, or sold on by third parties- it happen all the time.
Got rid of my JL & M & S cards when they were hacked.

Also, Labour have a substantial majority, so even if all the other parties voted against it they couldn’t defeat the government?

At long last a hint towards modernisation with the introduction of digital ID cards. Having lived in countries which had ID cards it was all seen as normal and was useful in many ways - health care, benefits, employment, healthcare, education etc. I guess the tinfoil hat brigade will object but I’m not among them.

What can it give us that our NHS and National Insurance numbers already give us? It’s offensive and condescending for you to assume that anyone who doesn’t see the value of ID cards are members of the ‘tinfoil hat brigade’. I have no knowledge of what that is, but you obviously mean it as an insult 🤷‍♀️

They can't. That's the point!

There have been critics who have claimed that asylum seekers and illegal immigrants (they're different) can hide too easily in the UK.

It would appear that ID cards are a way to make that more difficult (criminals will always find a way). Hopefully, the people who bleat on and on about "stopping boats" will support the idea of ID cards.

One of the purposes of the ID card presumably is to stop individuals circumventing the black market. Why have the proliferation of umpteen barbers and candy shops etc. been allowed to flourish in the first place? Often they are a front for nefarious purposes.

All employers should be asking for a NI number at the start of employment, everybody who is entitled to work already has, and there are still people working on the side. I don't believe for a minute this will help. Currently, the number of signatures on the Govt petition website is standing at 1,271,972. It's been waiting for a debate date for 4 days so a lot of people are pretty incensed about it.

If that's what you believe, I hope you will start challenging the many people who criticise the UK for not having ID cards. It has become almost standard for protestors against immigration to cite the lack of ID cards as one of the UK's "pull factors".

I agree #Growstuff but why would introducing ID cards stop the employment of people without NI or the proposed new ID. They do not ask for NINI number so why would they concern themselves with the new ID system. Employers who want to work that way won't ask for the new ID card anymore than they would ask for their NI number.

France and Germany have ID cards but it hasn’t stopped illegal migration which are real problems in both countries.

Most of my family have ID cards as they live in Europe, I am all for them as they can make life easier.
Why would you be reluctant ? Only if you had something to hide.
