Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

What exactly do you mean by that CariadAgain?

lixy Mon 13-Oct-25 13:51:10

Goodness, such huffiness on a day that sees all the peoples actually involved on the ground being delighted to see their friends and family again and others being delighted for them.

But there we are, that’s n and p for you.

I am delighted that so many families are being reunited. That does not mean that I think there is peace in the Middle East, or that there will be for many years to come.

It's actually quite a common response on GN. You wrote something similar to me yesterday.

Where is your joy Oreo? This is a wondrous day. Yet you are on this thread, and it looks as if you are criticising some of our Posters.
Be in the moment. It is long awaited.

I haven't written anything on your thread, Oreo. I've been out and about all morning and only looked at this post in the supermarket car park because I had responded to it this morning before I went out. Like many GNetters I assume, I don't live on GN and often only look at the threads that I have responded to. This morning I heard on the news that 7 of the hostages had been released, I'm pleased and relieved that the rest have also been released but I won't post on your thread now. An omission to publicly celebrate something on social media is not an indication that someone isn't pleased, happy or joyous, it just means they haven't felt the need to share it on social media.

A first step has been taken. The hostages have been released. There is a long way to go fraught with difficulties. I hope Netanyahu keeps to the plan but I don't trust him or some of the Knesset. Also there is a volatile situation in Gaza now that people who aren't involved could be caught up in.
I want peace in the middle east as many of us do. Will have to see if this tortuous journey to peace will ever be completed.

Have tried to read Iran’s response since it has refused to engage in Egypt. Apparently there’s an admission that October 7th was a mistake. Small steps …. Feeling slightly more optimistic.

Oreo

Actually sunami you could write ‘fantastic’ or anything else that denotes pleasure that the hostages are released.
Not wanting to to do that is a whole other matter.

Goes away muttering, "glass half empty"

Well, you can only speak for yourself, of course but personally, I'm pleased.
But then, I'm usually a glass half full person.

It has t be tempered with sorrow, of course but hope that the peace will hold.

My joy is bubbling over Maremia it’s a wonderful day indeed.
It would have been nice if all the regular contributors to Middle East threads had said something pleasant about the returned hostages ( some have and some definitely haven’t) but nothing can spoil my relief and happiness about it.Just enjoyed a celebratory lunch with Mum and friends. All credit to Donald Trump and those who have worked behind the scenes and the Israeli government that this day has arrived.😃

Oreo Mon 13-Oct-25 15:17:34

I’m a glass half full person as well Allira👍🏻

I havnt seen the other thread but of course it’s good news. That surely goes without saying. As a parent I am happy for families who have been reunited with their children, wherever they are.
We parents love our children beyond measure and want them to be safe, and happy and are heartbroken when they are not. Too many have died and parental grief is the same for us all.

Oreo, are you saying that you are keeping tabs on what others are posting?
That's a wee bit...not sure what is the GN acceptable description.

Allira Mon 13-Oct-25 15:47:48

Can you not give it a rest, today of all days?

Oreo Mon 13-Oct-25 15:49:20

No, some just enjoy it I think.🤔

Maremia Mon 13-Oct-25 16:38:10

Perhaps she was talking to you as well Oreo?

Humbug humbug! wink

Actually no! Of course I'm happy about it. Who wouldn't be? However, I'm sad for those whose friends and relatives didn't make it. I can't imagine how they must be feeling.

To be perfectly honest, I hardly ever contribute to any thread where some kind of emotion is required. For example, there's a thread currently running about Diane Keaton. I was a great fan of hers, but I haven't contributed because there seems little point. I didn't know her and nobody is going to take note whether I add my condolences to all the millions of others.
My contribution to any thread expressing happiness that the hostages have been released wouldn't mean anything to anybody either. That's just the way I am. If I know somebody who has lost somebody, I will offer condolences, but I don't know anybody who has been affected directly. There's nothing I could do to help anybody, so I leave it to others, but I do object to being told that not offering condolences means I must belong to the opposition. That's just silly (and offensive)!

How could any of us not be glad? I shall indeed celebrate when families in the whole of Palestine are reunited and relatively safe and feel "I'm at home!"

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Oct-25 17:25:28

Some posters have posted about the gangs and Hamas taking control.

Apparently according to Trump it has all been agreed before hand for a period of time.

Funny old world ain’t it?

There has been footage showing some Palestinian people being released from the torture prisons. They look very frail, but hopefully they can now begin to build their life.

I've just listened to the King of Jordon being interviewed. Worryingly he doesn't think the peace will hold, He wants peace but is unsure of the Israeli govt. I hope he's wrong.

A lot of people see Israel as the weakest link in tho whole thing. Let’s hope Trump holds them down.

After listening to Netanyahu today😮😮😮.
