Surely there are better ways to spend council money.

I always wonder why people need a flag to know they are living in the UK. Surely all of the litter and graffiti would tell them that !
I think the money could be better used in paying for graffiti removal and street cleaning

Today, in Nottingham Post - there's a petition, with 3,500 signatures, against the flags being put up in Nottingham, so all the left-wingers can rest easy again. We've got a Pride Quarter (area in Hockley), though, and that's ok, apparently.

It does mean a ban on Palestinian flags tho. A sensible move in a feverish climate possibly?

Do you mean you object to people expressing their views through signing a petition complaining about the Council spending money on flags?

I agree, total waste of cash

Nobody is going to ban flags if they have any sense ( not spending money on it is a different thing). The pride flag makes me slightly uneasy due to the link I think it now has with misogyny but as I am aware that the world shouldn't revolve around my feelings, I think people have a right to fly it. I probably hold sightly different views about flags in the workplace.

Why would they be 'divisive flags'. Do you feel intimidated when you visit countries abroad and flags are flown on every building? It is a symbol of pride in their country. When the British do it, it's racist!!

…except it isn’t of course.
What you usually get on forums about flag flying are some silly comments along the lines of ‘oh yes, it’s fine to see flags in Norway/ France/Timbuctoo but it’s horrible and really upsets me to see them here so hateful and divisive!’ Usually followed by the tear / sad emoji. It makes me laugh tbh.

Conversely, they just love Pride flags or Palestinian ones.🤷🏼‍♀️

Casdon Tue 28-Oct-25 18:11:31

My local town is a flag free zone - no Welsh, UK, Pride, Palestinian or any other flags assail you as you drive through from one end to the other. We did have some red, white and green bunting in the Main Street over the summer, but that’s gone now too. I think we are lucky - or boring, depending on how you look at it.

We have some bunting for special occasions like jubilees, but we seem to be a flag-free zone too. I like it that way!

But they are hateful and divisive. Most of us know what they symbolise and why people are so intent on flying them. I can't say flags upset me, but I hate what the kind of nationalism they represent, so they're divisive. I certainly wouldn't want £75k of my council's revenue spent on them.

In your opinion growstuff which you’re entitled to, but it doesn’t make it true.

What's not true about what I wrote? It's all true!

Oreo Tue 28-Oct-25 18:35:34

Hateful? I don’t agree at all, they’re our flags.

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 28-Oct-25 19:43:53

Casdon I was stating a fact. Whether I agree or disagree with it doesn't matter, does it?

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 28-Oct-25 19:46:11

What exactly makes the flying of the English flag or Union Jack hateful and divisive? What flags should be flown? If not those, then surely none.

‘So all the left wingers can rest easy again’ isn’t a fact, unless you personally know the political leaning of everybody who signed the petition? I imagine it was probably just people of a variety of political persuasions or none, who thought the money could be better spent.

Youngnanny Tue 28-Oct-25 20:26:15

Flags, we’ve got them in our Welsh village 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
Reform need to understand under International law we have to take migrants, or would they prefer we just drown them 🤔
God help us!

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 28-Oct-25 21:24:37

Casdon I'm assuming most of them are left-wing, just as some of you on here assume all those in favour of having this nation's flag are racist. Again, what makes the flying of our flags hateful or divisive?

Casdon Tue 28-Oct-25 21:34:11

I have not said that I assume all those in favour of having this nation’s flag are racist, nor have I implied it HowVeryDareYou2.

What makes the flying of our flags hateful or divisive?
The answer is simple.
Intent!!!!

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 28-Oct-25 22:09:21

Casdon Nor did I mention you.

They are playing to a particular audience and I think it's unethical and ridiculous, not least because it is a waste of money that needs to be spent elsewhere.

There is no need to be rude and condescending just because you hold a different view.
