Surely there are better ways to spend council money.

Saw a great post on Facebook, where one community has 'solved the problem' by putting up jolly strings of bunting, and on the bunting are flag colours of all sorts.
Good for them.

They may have got the idea from Gransnet!
I'm sure that was posted on another thread.

It was typical Welsh humour, taking the mickey.

Thanks Caddon!

Ludicrous waste of money.

dont mention flags to me atm 😡

I arrived to see family in Co Durham. Everywhere, up high on lamp posts (out of reach) are massed England flags. Put up by men using long ladders.

Reform Party, DiL saw them doing it. I said, why aren't they getting taken down by opposition? she said, you'd get knifed.

Nice, I thought, terrific. Democracy at its very best.

Absolutely clear example of hi jacking the English flag for one political side. It's no good saying "no far right taking it over"

they are.

I live in county durham. I have never heard anything about what you are describing. We have endless Facebook discussions on how terrible the flags are from earnest centrists on the whole, they strangely enough feel safe to do that.
There are flags here on lampposts but if you drive around they are mostly in the deprived areas in people's houses.
If you mean will these deprived areas vote reform, absolutely, and I don't blame them.
The worse political violence i have seen in county durham was the harassment of our local mp by pro palestine supporters ( it was very scary and very much not the far right)

Casdon Sat 01-Nov-25 08:13:59

How many people live in County Durham? Surely both these accounts can be equally valid?

Wyllow3 Sat 01-Nov-25 08:36:20

Well, of course. Driving through to my family, I passed quiet areas but also areas with flags every 80 yards, staying in one.
DiL and DS witnessed both too of course.

Galaxy Sat 01-Nov-25 08:36:36

Reform took county durham via the ballot box not with political violence. I know this is hard for some people to accept, but more people voted for them.

I must live in flag central, Co. Durham. Flags lined a practically continuous stretch of about 3 or 4 miles of road connecting 3 settlements. They are there in my face, so to speak, every single time I leave the road I live in to go anywhere.

Inevitably, some very windy weather and, I suspect, some objectors to the patriotic pantomime, have removed some, but enough remain to be offensive.

Wyllow’s DiL is absolutely correct in what she says. No-one with any sense messes with the folk who put these flags up. They are not nice people.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean everybody voted for Reform, so why try to invalidate somebody else’s comment?

What opposition?
Does it bother the majority of people in Durham, which is in England, that the English flag is flying?

It certainly bothers most of the people I talk to. No-one wants to be knifed, though. Or a brick through their window, or their car scratched etc.

There have been plenty of complaints to the local council. A very few flags in very dodgy positions have been removed.

Dorisdodar Sat 01-Nov-25 09:42:59

Two serious incidents in the news lately of knifing and it wasn't committed by people putting flags up

Oreo Sat 01-Nov-25 09:45:06

Where does all this ‘knifed’ stuff come from? What evidence is there for it? Isn’t it more a of a hatred of Reform than anything else, or are there stabbed patients lying in Durham hospitals, victims of the Reform Council? Has anyone been stabbed ?

MaizieD Sat 01-Nov-25 09:54:12

Evidence in the post just above yours, Oreo.

I saw that a bloke had been badly beaten for trying to cut one down.
I hope the persons who assaulted him, get a hefty sentence.

Yes, the values represented by the flags are offensive to many people.
