Daily Mail to Buy Out The Telegraph?

The Guardian is run by The Scot Trust Ltd- the sole shareholder of Guardian media company. It does not pay out to shareholders therefore reinvests any profits into sustaining its financial and editorial independence and protecting it from commercial or political interference. Similar to the Independent Newspaper.

Many of the others are part of large media groups with different ownership structures, e.g. Rupert Murdoch News corporation etc. These are more profit driven and editorially more politically influenced.

Does anyone know of a moderate newspaper which offers centrist views?

I actually read the main stories on line in the The Telegraph and the Guardian every day in an attempt to get both sides of a story. Amazing the different emphasis/ interpretation on the same 'facts'. No wonder I'm confused.

Some of the best serious news coverage in my opinion is from Reuters, but they don’t cover gossip stories, only news.

Better the Daily Mail than Red bird buying the Telegraph. I subscribe to a paper copy of the D Tel. I'm almost a life-long reader of it because my father took it. He always did the Quick Crossword and wouldn't write in any answer until I'd spelt it correctly so I always did well in spelling tests at school! I now do the cryptic crossword but not every day. I also have a digital subscription to The Times.

I have noticed how the DT has gone down hill. Years ago it used to be an intelligent right wing paper. Now it is just as trashy and bigoted as all the other 'right minded' newspapers.

The Guardian on the other hand has got better and is not as bang the drum left wing as it used to be.

The country needs a serious right wing newspaper for balance. The Daily Mail & The Telegraph (yes, I subscribe) versus The Guardian and The mirror.

I agree that there is too much celeb tittle tattle these days, but that's sadly the world we live in.

I would say give Rothermere a chance, at least it stays British - sort of.

The Daily Mail must be doing something right. It has the largest sale of any other newspaper, whereas the Guardian is always asking for money.

Popularity is not the same as a good newspaper. I chip in for the Guardian, its makes it free online for all, and its true that nowadays its sobered up on the fringe reporting and when there is a major ongoing news issue it gives a running report.

We used to take the Telegraph when we lived in England, but that is 35 years ago now. Is it not the paper I remember then?

Being sued in itself is not a particular measure of good journalism and edirotiral standards. It depends on the grounds that the newspaper was sued and whether the case was upheld, or settled by the newspaper specifically (thereby some inference the media company may have lost the case if it came to court).

For example recently Noel Clark sued the Guardian for libel and defamation. He claimed the Guardian's story, that he was sexually inappropriate towards various women, was without foundation and a conspiracy against him. He lost his claim. The Guardian had put forward a case that their investigation into Clark was in the public interest, deeply researched, reporters had worked diligently and was factually correct. The judge found in the Guardian's favour and that it was a reasonable belief the published story was in the public favour...

We buy proper printed newspapers which in my opinion is preferable to reading the online versions.

Absolutely agree. We read a newspaperfrom either end of the political divide. There is actually some very good journalism, both political and non-political in both the DT and the DM if people were not too prejudiced to realise it.

The problem with online news is that what news is put before us is refined and filtered to provide us with limited stories on subjects known to appeal to us.

Newspapers, any newspaper has over its pages articles and news on all sorts of subjects that I am superficially not interested in, but I will read an article because a sentence or phrase or headline catches my attention. I have even been found reading articles on the ssports pages, because something caught my eye.

I have always been wide ranging and as far as possible unprejudiced in what I read. If it is print I will read it. That is how it ought to be.
