A Thailand-based cryptocurrency investor has handed a record £9m to Nigel Farage’s Reform.

Christopher Harborne, who previously gave £1m to Boris Johnson and millions of pounds to the Brexit Party, has given the cash to Reform as it tops the polls and seeks to woo senior Conservatives.

It is the biggest single donation from a living person to any British political party.

Oh! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Allira Thu 04-Dec-25 19:57:35

😲

The question is why?

He has lived in Thailand for 20 years and is Thai-British, aka Chakrit Sakunkrit, according to Sky News.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 04-Dec-25 20:23:14

I suppose you’re right Allira in tgat there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Labour and the unions? 🤔

Oreo Thu 04-Dec-25 20:29:47

What a bonanza for Reform! He must be a real fan of the Party and believe that they stand a good chance in the next GE.

Elegran Thu 04-Dec-25 21:25:36

I hope he doesn't wear a red baseball cap.

M0nica Thu 04-Dec-25 21:30:41

i do not think anyone should be able to donate to a British political party unless they are domiciled in the UK and paying their taxes here.

butterandjam Thu 04-Dec-25 21:38:30

Will it be taxed? Just asking

ronib Thu 04-Dec-25 22:09:52

It’s a bit worrying I guess. What is the payback?

I agree.

He looks surprisingly quite ordinary!

I wonder why the crypto billionaire has donated £9 million to Reform …

“Mr Farage has backed the deregulation of crypto and, shortly after receiving the donation, publicly promoted Tether, the cryptocurrency company that Mr Harborne is a shareholder in.” (The Independent)

Mmm🤔

CabbageWars13 Fri 05-Dec-25 01:11:52

The very same Nigel Farage currently having accusations of racism and anti‐semitism piling up against him from former pupils of Dulwich College?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 05-Dec-25 01:29:36

How much influence does £9 million buy?

The donor must think - quite a lot.

mum2three Fri 05-Dec-25 05:02:26

He must be getting something in return. All the political parties work in the same way, they rely on donations but this leaves them open to bribes. He must feel confident that Reform will win the next election.

Jojo1950 Sun 07-Dec-25 13:35:12

A Peerage?

GrannyO Sun 07-Dec-25 14:29:50

He must be getting something in return from a third party. Russia pulling the strings behind the scenes?

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 07-Dec-25 15:19:47

Yep, LizzieDrip, I noticed that.
I think this might be more a case of this gentleman putting his mouth where his money is.

Exactly this.

Etoile2701 Sun 07-Dec-25 15:37:13

What a waste of money when it could have gone to so many good causes. Shame on him! He doesn't even live in the UK.

Applegran Sun 07-Dec-25 16:31:10

There is a suggestion by the Electoral Reform Society - who are really working on the side of democracy - there should be a cap on how much anyone can donate to a political party.
And of course it should not be possible for UK parties to receive donations from people who do not live here and have no connection with us - except perhaps the hope of some kind of personal gain.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 07-Dec-25 16:37:36

Reform’s Scottish membership has soared from around 2,000 to 13,000 since July 2024.

ronib Sun 07-Dec-25 16:37:49

Mr Harborne may be a genius at making money but he’s yet to pick a winner in politics. If he wants to fritter away £9 million, there are more worthy causes but his money, his choice.

Geordiegirl1 Sun 07-Dec-25 16:38:00

The Unions are the origin of the Labour Party. I see no sign of them ( the Unions) having any influence anymore, unfortunately.

MrsMatt Sun 07-Dec-25 16:50:26

More money than sense, unfortunately.
