He went on to say that Greenland is surrounded by Russian and Chinese War Ships, and that Greenland and Denmark are not willing to do anything about it.

We (USA) need Greenland for our security

Up till now I have thought it was just bluster could he be on a roll of hostile takeovers?

I wonder what would happen if Putin or Xi invaded Greenland. I can see the strategic importance of Greenland to the USA from looking at a globe map and no doubt so can Russia and China.

Trump is playing right into their hands, but he cannot see that, of course.

I think Trump is in alliance with Putin which is why he won't condemn him for his land grabbing in Ukraine. I can't help wondering if there is a deal with Russia regarding Venezuela we don't know about and this rhetoric against Europe is part of that. Russia may well be less worried about Greenland if he sees Europe left in the lurch by Trump.

Good to see the European leaders gathering in Paris.

He has a corporate mind-set, which will not do for a politician. The difference is consensus and publicity. He has not learned to engage brain before mouth, and seek consensus, at least among his peers before deciding on actions.
However, his corporate mind sees that Ukraine is a no win for their people. It sees that the US needs to reign in its global spending, and I am guessing that he sees Greenland as an untapped resource as well as access to a slice of the Artic ice (in the same way as Falklands gave us Antarctica)

Allira Tue 06-Jan-26 14:59:39

(in the same way as Falklands gave us Antarctica)
That is simply not true in any way.

It is entirely separate, and a distance of about 1,500 km separates the Falklands etc from Antarctica.

Interesting that the world globe hugely distorts the size of Greenland.
It is in fact the size between UK and France.
Wonder of POTUS knows that! grin

Trump is a bully and like all bullies he seems to get his way.
I don't believe the theory that people get their due as too many bullies - like Putin- get away with things for years.

Greenland is significantly larger than the UK and nearly four times the size of France. It is the world's largest island.

It is not its size, anyway, it is Greenland's resources at stake here.

In Denmark and in Greenland this is being taken very seriously.

According to our Navy, there are NO Russian nor Chinese battleships anywhere near Greenland, but we all know that Trump says anything that suits him.

He wants Greenland, and unfortunately no-one has yet convinced him that he can't have it.

Not so long ago he wanted Canada too, and some say he wants Mexico, and having got his claws into Venuzuela, he is said to be considering trying the same thing on both Cuba and Colombia.

As a business tycoon Trump has spent most of his adult life getting precisely what he wanted. He obviously does not realise that international politics and diplomacy have different rules.

The trouble is, that no-one knows how to stop him.

Yes it is very worrying.

There is no doubt that he got very excited over the success in Venezuela - that sugar rush will be repeated.

The question now is what happens to NATO if it fails to defend Greenland?

It is disastrous.

If NATO stands by and allows Trump to take Greenland then NATO is finished and discredited beyond repair. The USA will be solely responsible and will not be forgiven even when Trump has gone.

I am not clear what NATO would do if Trump takes over Greenland.

So it seems to me that NATO is already under severe strain, which must be Putins New Year wishes all coming at once.

So is the future for Europe almost certainly under threat from Russia.

The takeover of Greenland is -listening to the radio - something that can and will happen without a shot being fired.
The USA has a base in Greenland, and all it has to do is simply move in more troops to a level needed to defend themselves. Take down the Danish flag - fly the Stars and Stripes.

Job done.

Greenland has it own flag, so the Danish flag is only flown there, if at all, when the King visits.

And the American military presence in Greenland is smaller than it used to be.

Do please, try to get facts right, or say, if we are unsure of them!

Taking into account that the League of Nations did damn all when Hitler annexed Austria, it would be naive to assume that NATO can do anything if Trump does try to take Greenland or anywhere else.

NATO does not have a standing army, and as far as I know no country on earth has everyconsidered how it legally could get rid of a President or monarch, for that matter, who became insane, or while sane constituted a danger to his own and other countries.

So start praying, and praying hard that Trump drops dead, or that the forty-whatever percent of Americans who did not vote for Trump work out some way of getting rid of him.

Yes, I realise I misread it.Apologies.

Venezuela, Greenland, Wherever next? Be afraid , bevery afraid.

But Trump is only doing what the old European Colonial Powers used to do including our own Great British Empire.

You know march into someone elses conytry. Put you flag on it tjen claim it is yours the take all their natural resources.

Fallingstar Tue 06-Jan-26 16:01:58

I feel genuinely upset over all this, time was that even though there were conflicts and unrest around the world we kind of knew where we stood. Now the world has turned on its axis and I fear for the younger generation who inherit this not so brave new world. It seems nobody can get rid of Trump but he is intent upon getting rid of any other leader who has rich resources in their back yard. NATO could fall and Europe is too weak to do much except look indignant.
How on earth do we come to this.

fancythat Tue 06-Jan-26 16:14:00

Lack of defense spending for one thing.

Many people[not just meaning people on GN] seem to get mixed up with defense and attack.

Just because a Country has good defense, in no way can mean they are always ready to attack.

fancythat Tue 06-Jan-26 16:15:36

I also think, relying on Europe to do anything much is a big weakness. If not huge.

It may have been better when a lot less Countries, but ironically the more Countries that joined the EU, the weaker it became.
32 Countries are not going to agree on anything.

Also not listening to what the Uk military have been saying since the mid 90s.

They are the ones that should know what they are talking about.

We had warnings. Lots of them.

If they'd given him the prize, maybe he wouldn't have waged war on Venezuala? At least not until the novelty wore off...

GREENLAND (DENMARK). is an autonomous region of Denmark not the USA.
Keep your hands off our ally.

The Americans already have a foothold which can be a Trogan Horse. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pituffik_Space_Base

He's a fascist dictator, Venezuela, then Greenland... Then whichever country has the oil and weakness.
Everyone is worrying about Russia when they are the real threat is trump.

I have been wondering that myself.

A strange thing to think, isnt it.

Cuba is next IMO. Though don't write Greenland off. Steven Miller said during an interview that no one is going to stand up to the US military. Arrogant little... He is right, but I still can't wait to see this man be tried first for his war crimes.
