POTUS Trump, stated on Air Force One over night, ^We need Greenland^

He went on to say that Greenland is surrounded by Russian and Chinese War Ships, and that Greenland and Denmark are not willing to do anything about it.

We (USA) need Greenland for our security

Up till now I have thought it was just bluster could he be on a roll of hostile takeovers?

So Trump is apparently making very loud noises about taking Greenland imminently.
The repercussions for NATO will be extremely serious, with European countries now recognising that it isn’t just Putin they need to fear as a potential enemy but an erstwhile ally.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Jan-26 09:17:30

Yes it is very worrying.

There is no doubt that he got very excited over the success in Venezuela - that sugar rush will be repeated.

The question now is what happens to NATO if it fails to defend Greenland?

It is disastrous.

The USA can’t stretch to that extent!

I am nowhere near as sure as others seem to be.

The might of America is huge.

I would be far more concenred if I was certain Countries, of America, than I ever was of Russia.
Or China,
Or any other Country.

It all assumes the military in America Backs Trump.
He has huge following, but enough to effectively wage war in Countries that are not fighting them?
Not so sure at all about that.

A lot of his followers have been Christians.
I cant see how some of them at least, can be jumping for joy over current happenings.

I’m afraid I agree, very scary times for the world!

If NATO stands by and allows Trump to take Greenland then NATO is finished and discredited beyond repair. The USA will be solely responsible and will not be forgiven even when Trump has gone.

It’s all such a blooming awful mess, this man Trump, the “peace maker” is much more of a “p**s taker” and every single country should be on high alert.

Scary stuff, Trump is going rogue and has the might of a super power behind him.
Are we to understand, in this case, that in the US there are no means to rein the president in when acts of aggression that could destabilise whole regions are committed seemingly without any prior warning to allies?
Or are all agencies in the US in favour of such adventuring or too scared to stand up to Trump?
Let’s hope there is a bit more in the way of reining him in if he ever gets near that nuclear button.

I think it's the "too scared to stand up to Trump" thing.
He goes after opponents big-time, & not the group, he'll single out some "leader" & sue, blacklist, get them sacked.

It's been very effective at quelling critisicm but I do think that if he tries feet on the ground invasions of these countries, the US won't stand for it. Foreign intervention is always very unpopular there if it involves risking American lives.

Agree.
Who would have thought that the person most intent upon causing WW3 would be a US President. We were all looking towards Russia, China, or the ME. Sadly in the wrong direction entirely.

I am not clear what NATO would do if Trump takes over Greenland.

So it seems to me that NATO is already under severe strain, which must be Putins New Year wishes all coming at once.

So is the future for Europe almost certainly under threat from Russia.

The takeover of Greenland is -listening to the radio - something that can and will happen without a shot being fired.
The USA has a base in Greenland, and all it has to do is simply move in more troops to a level needed to defend themselves. Take down the Danish flag - fly the Stars and Stripes.

Job done.

I wonder what would happen if Putin or Xi invaded Greenland. I can see the strategic importance of Greenland to the USA from looking at a globe map and no doubt so can Russia and China.

Rosie51 Tue 06-Jan-26 11:15:14

WWM2 while there may be nothing physically that NATO can do to stop the takeover as you describe, it must as an organisation publicly condemn Trump and the USA for its actions. If NATO stays silent then it silently endorses and approves the action. Bullies bully because nobody stands up to them, how I wish the American people and politicians could grow a backbone and get rid of this madman.

AGAA4 Tue 06-Jan-26 11:46:58

Trump won't stop at Greenland. He also has his sights on Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and others.
He wants all the resources of these countries for the US and ultimately for himself.
It seems he wants the stars and stripes flag flying in many countries. The Trump regime is dangerous. There are others in his circle who are just as if not more ambitious than he is.

Trump is playing right into their hands, but he cannot see that, of course.

Have spent a lot of time in the US and lived in NYC for a couple of years in my youth. My experience of many people in the US is that they don’t bother themselves too much with international affairs, they have always been rather inward looking so am not sure if any interest they might have in this latest development or the possible invasion of Greenland. Only if Trump puts boots on the ground do Americans tend to sit up and take notice. But am more than happy to be proved wrong on this.

Agreed.

This is part of what I mean by the US is strong enough to act in several directions at once.

What I question is can Trump himself manage it. At his age and health.

And if he cant/doesnt/pulls back, who else would actually want to take it all on.

Sad to say, I do not believe the majority of Americans care greatly about what happens in the rest of the world unless it affects them directly. I doubt if there will be much of a move to unseat Trump, because after all, 'he is making America Great again.'
They think.

I disagree. I think at least 50% of Americans do NOT support Trump and do care about both fellow countrymen and those from other nations.

fancythat Tue 06-Jan-26 13:19:51

About 10-20% of english[looked up scottish as well but no figures] never leave england.
The figure for Americans is upwards of 40%.

fancythat Tue 06-Jan-26 13:21:24

Not to say they dont care, but the US is so big, I think they are rather inward looking as well.

I have to say I dont know that many Americans.
Know a couple of people who lived there for a few months.

Well yes, and am not blaming Americans for being inward looking, for as you say they have a massive country, so domestic affairs figure large - literally.

Maremia Tue 06-Jan-26 13:30:17

Trump has what is possibly dementia. If so, his thought processes will not improve. But, this suits the Puppet Masters, who know how to control him. Lots of praise. Lots of TV appearances.
Don't know how this will resolve.

The majority of Americans disagree with you. They care, but Trump and Republicans are doing enough damage domestically that they need to focus on their own hardships. Do you care that millions of Americans lost healthcare coverage on the first of this month? Do you care about how many Americans will remain ill as a result of Trump’s policies? Do you care about the minorities and women losing education assistance due to Trump? Do you care about the millions of Americans who will face food instability due to the cuts to SNAP benefits? People all over the world have problems to deal with directly in front of their faces. This madman may have supporters in the US but he has harmed many there as well. The entire playbook was to undo all that helped level the playing field and it is working. Disparities between the wealthy and white, and minorities will grow exponentially as a result of this administration. And guess what? He’s also attacking the voting rights of minority communities by using Republicans to legislate voting barriers and diluting their votes with gerrymandering. Please do not thumb your nose up at all Americans just because you don’t understand their own domestic challenges.

But the salient point is Greenland (& other countries including Canada and Venezuela) are not part of USA and no one, regardless of their reasons, should be effectively invading them!
