Tony Blair has said that the U.K. should have gone into the war with the USA on day 1.

Here’s what the UK is actually doing in the Iran conflict right now, and how close it is to being “in the war.”

🇬🇧 The UK is not officially at war with Iran

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain would not join the US-Israel offensive strikes against Iran. The government wants to avoid repeating mistakes from the Iraq War.

Instead, Britain says its actions are “defensive.”

✈️ What British forces are actually doing

1. Air defence and patrols

The UK has deployed aircraft and defence systems to the region, including:
•Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets
•Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II jets
•radar and counter-drone systems

They are flying patrols and helping defend Gulf allies from missiles and drones.

British forces have shot down Iranian drones in places like Jordan, Qatar, and Iraq.

2. Allowing the US to use British bases

The UK has allowed the United States to use certain British bases, including RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, for limited strikes against Iranian missiles and launch sites.

But the government says those bases cannot be used for broader attacks inside Iran.

3. Naval and military presence

Britain has deployed some assets but far fewer than the US or France:
•The destroyer HMS Dragon (D35) is heading to the eastern Mediterranean.
•The aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales (R09) was considered but will not be sent to the Middle East.

💣 Risks for the UK

Even without formally joining the war, Britain is already being drawn in because:
•UK bases in Cyprus have been targeted by drones linked to Iranian allies.
•Around 300,000 British citizens live or travel in the region, which the UK may need to protect or evacuate.

✅ In simple terms:
•The UK is not bombing Iran.
•But it is supporting allies defensively, shooting down drones, and letting the US use some bases.
•Critics like Tony Blair think Britain should support the US more strongly, while the government is trying to stay limited.

Thank you WW.

We are at war with Iran thanks to Trump. A war that most of us didn't want. Nor it seems did many US citizens.
Why are we involved in a war between Israel and Iran. There was no danger to us or the US.
The reasons for starting this war were flimsy at best.

Smileless2012 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:26:26

Which is why when Starmer initially said 'no' to America using our bases, he should have stuck to it AGA.

AGAA4 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:26:34

The government is saying we are not at war but will Iran see it that way?

Oreo Tue 10-Mar-26 11:28:05

HMS Dragon won’t be going for a few more days yet.

France is making us look a bit silly, on purpose in Cyprus

Macron is throwing his weight around at home too - visiting nuclear sites, (Brest last week, Dieppe this week).

It seems they/we are all getting dragged into the situation one way or another.

And don’t forget he is a member of The Board Of Peace.

Keeping his job on TBOP explains why he made the statement.

HMS Dragon won’t be going for a few more days yet.

Why are we never action ready?
It's not like we only work from 9 - 5 , 5 days a week on our defence machinery, is it?

Oreo Tue 10-Mar-26 11:30:39

Supporting the US more strongly would only have meant giving permission for our bases to be used from day one.
Not bombing Iran.
Iran see no difference between the UK and the US anyway which is why there are so many Islamist terror attacks here.

It’s scary MarthavTaurus what’s been allowed to happen to UK Navy.

Iran made a big mistake in attacking all its neighbours.

Smileless2012 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:33:46

It's an illegal war and giving permission for our bases to be used from day one would have been condoning it.

Smileless2012 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:34:52

Trump and Netanyahu have made a big mistake attacking Iran especially with no 'plan' apart from dropping their bombs.

Oreo Tue 10-Mar-26 11:35:24

That’s just an old fashioned soundbite Smileless that suits your agenda now.
You wouldn’t have applied it for WW2 for instance so it’s meaningless.

I presume a lot of posters on this thread originally voted for TB. I did.

I am curious to know at what point you went away from him.

Iran made a big mistake in attacking all its neighbours.

I cant get my head around that. No matter how hard I try.

Smileless2012 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:39:46

Disagree by all means Oreo but don't refer to my opinions as meaningless because they differ from yours.

I guessed the RN was in worse shape than I thought, when the BBC made a programme about it.
Something about guarding the underground cables in the North Sea against the Russians.

Recently there is a programme about stalkers.
We all know that doesnt go well in real life.

Trump and Netanyahu have made a big mistake attacking Iran especially with no 'plan' apart from dropping their bombs.

The plan is to degrade their weapons and ships and aircraft, the ballistic missiles and their launching sites, their nuclear efforts/bases, assassinate as many of the top regime as they can.
The plan seems to be working very well so far.

'Who is the biggest fool? The fool that leads or the fool that follows'.

This is what is meaningless, not your own comments.

AGAA4 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:44:59

We have learned from history that the US interfering in middle east problems never ends well.
This is just one more mistake.

Smileless2012 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:46:01

But according to Trump their nuclear efforts/bases were dealt with in January and according to Trump at the beginning of this illegal war, it was to enable the Iranians to be freed from a brutal regime. Then it was because the USA was just two weeks away from Iran being an immediate threat.

It's difficult to know if the plan seems to be working very well if at all, when Trump can't decide what the actual plan is.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Mar-26 11:46:07

56% of Americans oppose the war. Which will inevitably rise if it continues.
