Should The King’s visit to America be postponed?

The visit is due sometime next month. America, at Trump’s instigation, is involved in a war seen by much of the world, as illegal. Mt Trump has been extremely rude and provocative to European leaders, especially to Keir Starmer.
If the visit goes ahead, I fear Mr T is so narcissistic, he’d see it as our Monarchy supporting him.
It’s been suggested the King could say his doctors advised against the visit. The decision though, should rest with the government, rather than expose the King to the possibility of being political
What to do?

I think he shouldn’t go and hope it’s cancelled before Trump gets wind of the idea and withdraws the invitation.

Iam64 Wed 18-Mar-26 12:41:18

It wouldn’t be an excuse, he’s in treatment for cancer and in his late seventies
I’m confident the King doesn’t use excuses

If Trump withdraws the invite you think criticism would fall on the King nut Trump ? I don’t agree

eazybee Wed 18-Mar-26 12:57:16

I cannot imagine that the King would be prepared to lie about his health to avoid a difficult situation. My opinion is that he is extremely diplomatic, and that his visit may in some part restore a better relationship between Britain and America.

eazybee, I agree the King would not lie. He’s a skilled diplomat, has had dealings with very difficult situations with some foreign leaders. I’m confident he could whisper Trump. I’m unhappy the King is in an invidious position.
I’m not a great Camilla fan but I can’t imagine her being in anyway phased by Melania or Trump.

Just hope that the Uk doesn’t have to call on the USA any time soon. We have to hope that the royal visit calms the situation down a bit. I imagine that a change of prime minister would help the special relationship. It might help us too.

Allira Wed 18-Mar-26 13:23:09

What special relationship 🤔

We do not want a Trump appeaser as a Prime Minister, thank you. We want one who puts British interests first and trusts our allies.
We cannot trust Trump.

ronib Wed 18-Mar-26 13:36:44

I prefer appeasing Trump over some of the other countries Starmer seems to prefer.

Such as?

Davida1968 Wed 18-Mar-26 13:54:07

I don't think that the King should go. (It's my guess that he probably doesn't want to either, though I appreciate that this doesn't come in to the equation/decision. It's just my opinion.)

Iam64 Wed 18-Mar-26 14:15:39

Yes do tell ronib. Starmer has managed Trump as well as anyone could. He has constructive relationships with other European leaders
Who do you suggest as an alternative prime minister

That is a hope we had after Trumps visit - what happened?

Bugger all.

Trump can never ever be trusted for anything at all.

Full stop.

But, he is the POTUS.

For better or for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, need I go on?

Yes - he was very reluctant over Trump’s visit, now if I were him I’d be apoplexite (sp?)

Both Farage and Badenoch have said that they do not want to join USA in this fight, so I’m intrigued as to who ronib has in mind.

Frankly I’m not sure we should any longer care that much.

Allira Wed 18-Mar-26 14:24:56

Apoplectic?
And not happy either.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when he and Camilla are discussing it.

I’ve just checked the positions of Ed Davey, Zak Polanski and Rupert Lowe. None of the support joining USA either.

I see no reason why he shouldn't. Sorry to say it, but King Charles is no Queen Elizabeth. She was a true ambassador for Britain, held in high regard by everyone. King Charles will simply be a foreign dignitary paying a visit. I doubt if politics will come into it.
What would be interesting is if Trump and Charles discuss the present state of Britain and its government. I would like to know Charles' honest opinion, but of course, any such conversation will be kept private.

Fallingstar Wed 18-Mar-26 14:51:01

I wouldn’t put it past Trump to bring politics into a conversation with the King and bad mouth Starmer as he does with every visiting leader in front of the cameras.
The man is totally uncouth and can’t help himself. So I don’t think the King should visit Trump and am pretty sure the government will feel likewise, but if he does I hope he will have the presence of mind to say that he isn’t there to talk about the PM. End of.

Casdon Wed 18-Mar-26 14:57:28

The potential of the King not going has hit the US press too, here is the CNN take. Nothing at all is finalised by the look of it.
